With the upcoming Emmerdale disaster week, I thought it would be a good chance to discuss the best and worst soap disasters. Corrie's tram crash and siege week, Emmerdale's siege week and Katie's mine fall are my personal favourites. Eastenders disasters are never much good, the fairground collapse was truly awful.

One of the worst ones I can remember was on Hollyoaks back in the Teens era, when the 6th form burnt down (2012?).

There was all this hype from Emma Smithwick, and all that happened was Tilly fell off a bookshelf and bonked her head, and Heroine Bitch Maddie fought her way through a whiff of digital smoke and dragged her out.

Honestly the crappest thing ever.

The best I can remember - I'm going to cheat and say the moment in Hollyoaks Later when Brendan got blown up on the beach. Awesome.

Also the car crash that killed Gennie in Emmerdale.

Not just great stunts, either of them, but also really good storylines about characters I cared about.

eta: Oh, and how could I forget Donna going off the roof in ED? Though that was less of a disaster, more a dramatic moment.

Shortly followed by:

"Sorry Bryan, but it's not working out. We've looked at her CV and we feel Lorraine is better qualified for this role, so she will be taking over from you next week".

The cardboard funfair in EE must surely deserve a special mention - one of the worst "disasters" but way up there for pure entertainment value

The Queen Vic fire 2010 in EE was pretty good as far as fires go. Corrie Tram Crash & Emmerdale 2013 siege were very tense, edge of your seat stuff.

But a special mention has to go to EE New Years Day, that was such a good episode with the car crash ploughing though Bridge Street into the railings. Easily one of the best EE episodes in years.

I think Emmerdale and H&A always do the best disasters.
Home and Away were doing massive disasters as far back as 20 years ago with the earthquake, a time when there was no CGI. They've also had some amazing storms

The EE car crash at the start of this year was the best stunt EE have done in a long time. It wasn't announced and wasn't completely ruined by spoilers (like the Corrie VC fire). It also featured some great characters like Phil, Nick and Ronnie.

The special effects for the Victoria Court fire were pretty spectacular, but the ridiculous and implausible script and what it was calling the actors to do was truly dire.

I did think Kal popping back into the burning inferno of a flat to make himself a nice bacon barm was a bit distasteful, even if he was hungry.

Best EE disaster: Steve Owen's car explosion and Phil/Grant's River Thames car crash.

Worst EE disaster: The fairground disaster. So embarrassing!!!

The fire in home and away that started after Jack and his friend stole a car and crashed it, oh my god edge of the seat stuff.

Home and Away is awful - it's a teen drama now and disasters are their major storylines. That storm storyline in 2011 was laughable because it was apparently the most expensive disaster stunt ever

The worst one is The Hollyoaks bus crash where the Mini bus exploded and a car door landed on Maddies head and killed her

Best:

Dog in The Pond fire - HO
Show house explosion - Emmerdale
Sarah's parachute death (does that count?) - HO Later
Bus Crash - HO
Plane Crash - Neighbours

Worst:

Fairground Disaster - EE
Rovers Fire - Corrie (RIP Toni )
Victoria Court Fire - Corrie (the writing was embarrassing)
Joey and Lauren's car accident - EE
Phil and Carl's car accident - EE
Flat explosion - HO (I just thought it was pretty unnecessary)
The Hospital Siege - HO (if that counts)

I saw clips of a tornado in Neighbours, now that was laughable.

Anyway we're not talking about the shows in general, just the stunts so your opinion of the show is irrelevant. Just the stunts.

Yeah but they did some decent disasters back in the day before they were regular stories on soaps and most of them have been natural events, not endless arson storylines etc.

My favourite would be the plane crash with Belle, Martha, Kit, Kim and Robbie after the Barn explosion, that was gripping.

Also liked the Sutherlands stuck in the mineshaft.
