The destruction of Sarah as a character has been one of the biggest disasters of the past year or two.
As others have discussed, if the production team wanted to take Sarah down the route of being on the bones of her arse, without a job or any prospects, they could have easily done that. She could have returned to Weatherfield with her tail between her legs because her career had failed in some way. Instead we're meant to believe that she has gone from pulling strings in the Italian fashion industry to pulling pints in the Rovers. The whole thing is just disastrous. From the moment I saw her stumble into No.8 with a suitcase I knew things would be bad.
My biggest question is what does Sarah actually do? She just totters around the Street in her heels like a prototype Liz McDonald and barely says a word. The scripting since her return has been atrocious. Watch any scene featuring Sarah and she rarely says a thing.
Add to that the seemingly utter contempt for her family, her deluded approach to parenting and general lack of any kind of common sense and you've got a character that I simply can't stand. They may as well have got a couple of pieces of wood, a loose handful of nails, some stuffing and a 'Milan'-style outfit and fashioned a scarecrow to play Sarah.
I don't necessarily blame Tina O'Brien for this, it's certainly down to the writing and the development of the character (or lack of).
Her relationship with David should be full of tension but I find myself not caring in the slightest. Jack P Shepherd is marvellous, showing David as a complex, interesting character but sadly when he's pitted against the current incarnation of Tina O'Brien's Sarah, all of his efforts seem pointless. I'd tell Sarah to sod off and not come back. I just don't care about her.
Gail's transformation into simpering whimp doesn't help matters either. Why hasn't Gail given her a good shouting at? She always used to.
The Platts should be Corrie's premier family, particularly at the moment. On paper they are perfect - two of the show's longest serving actresses as matriarchs and three well-established adult children along with Paula Lane's Kylie. A few younger children dotted around to add to the mix. Surely this is a perfect soap family?
Gail needs to move out of No.8 and let David and Kylie have that as a family home. Gail was in a similar position when she lived with Ivy so it surprises me that Gail would do the same to David.
