I don't even think of her as being Bethany's mother. She is more like her younger sister.

I hate to say it, but Sarah (the character) comes across as someone with ... err ... learning difficulties (I take it we're not allowed to use words which are actually descriptive of a condition these days).

She meets every situation with exactly the same expression - a silly smirk - and seems to have no idea about what's happening around her.

My thoughts exactly, be it happy sad or angry, she has that stupid smirk on her face. She's not only a terrible mother, she is a terrible actress too.

I never knew this...
Lynsay and Leah King were selected to play the role of Sarah Louise Tilsley in Coronation Street in February 1987. They alternated in the role until May 1987 when Leah died from cot death, but their parents agreed that Lynsay could continue playing Sarah.[2] King played Sarah Louise until October 1999, when she decided to leave to focus on her education. She made her final appearance on 8 October 1999. Tina O'Brien replaced her as Sarah Louise.

Tina O Brien wasn't always like this though. In fact, back in her original stint she played Tina with a moody seriousness and had depth of character, a far cry from the vacuous silent smirker that has returned from Milan. It is almost like she has forgotten how to act

That is very interesting,as I have been watching old episodes of coronation street featuring this young actress, she was actually quite good. Getting back to present day Sarah Lou, l wonder is she being instructed to play her part in this manner , if she is its very short sighted by the script writers and very unfair on the actress as she's not being allowed to grow and give different facets to her character.

Well everyone nearly time to see another example of Sarah's parenting skills, note books at the ready, you never know we might learn something.😉

One of the most unbelievable things is the fact that David EVER entertains allowing her and Bethany into his house, given that they've both betrayed him so badly.

Every time I see the annoying mother and daughter in David's house, I say "Why does he let them in?". From the day they returned, they have colluded with Callum to take Max away from David, the only 'father' Max has ever had. He should change the locks, and tell Gail that, if she lets them, she can go as well. Very poor writing.

An unwritten rule of corrie is no one must ever call out Sarah on her despicable behaviour and anyone who does is evil and wrong to Dare question anything she does

They are definitely more like two sisters than sister and mother. Sarah has no authority over Bethany at all.

As others have discussed, if the production team wanted to take Sarah down the route of being on the bones of her arse, without a job or any prospects, they could have easily done that. She could have returned to Weatherfield with her tail between her legs because her career had failed in some way. Instead we're meant to believe that she has gone from pulling strings in the Italian fashion industry to pulling pints in the Rovers. The whole thing is just disastrous. From the moment I saw her stumble into No.8 with a suitcase I knew things would be bad.

My biggest question is what does Sarah actually do? She just totters around the Street in her heels like a prototype Liz McDonald and barely says a word. The scripting since her return has been atrocious. Watch any scene featuring Sarah and she rarely says a thing.

Add to that the seemingly utter contempt for her family, her deluded approach to parenting and general lack of any kind of common sense and you've got a character that I simply can't stand. They may as well have got a couple of pieces of wood, a loose handful of nails, some stuffing and a 'Milan'-style outfit and fashioned a scarecrow to play Sarah.

I don't necessarily blame Tina O'Brien for this, it's certainly down to the writing and the development of the character (or lack of).

Her relationship with David should be full of tension but I find myself not caring in the slightest. Jack P Shepherd is marvellous, showing David as a complex, interesting character but sadly when he's pitted against the current incarnation of Tina O'Brien's Sarah, all of his efforts seem pointless. I'd tell Sarah to sod off and not come back. I just don't care about her.

Gail's transformation into simpering whimp doesn't help matters either. Why hasn't Gail given her a good shouting at? She always used to.

The Platts should be Corrie's premier family, particularly at the moment. On paper they are perfect - two of the show's longest serving actresses as matriarchs and three well-established adult children along with Paula Lane's Kylie. A few younger children dotted around to add to the mix. Surely this is a perfect soap family?

Gail needs to move out of No.8 and let David and Kylie have that as a family home. Gail was in a similar position when she lived with Ivy so it surprises me that Gail would do the same to David.”

Excellent post KK!

The Platts should be the best family on the street & they're still my favourite family but the writing for them over the past couple of years has been appalling. Gail should be a strong matriarch but she's become a joke. David would have seen Callum off months ago with some devilish plan, not allowed him to walk all over him. Sarah would have matured during her years in Italy & might think with her brain instead of her lady parts. Kylie would never have gone back to drugs in the first place. And what happened to Nick's brain damage?

And she's a terrible daughter and sister. She lets Callum talk to Gail and David like dirt. She even looks amused by it sometimes. She's a despicable human being!

I think it's terrible casting as well tbh. Bethany looks older than her mother. I know that Sarah was very young when she had her but the girl playing Bethany looks way older than the age she is playing

Yes! She is supposed to be playing 15, but looks about early twenties with a face full of make up

Sarah was being her immature self tonight first moaning to Gail about Callum, then storming into the gym and accusing him of eyeing up other women, she is behaving like a thirteen year old girl. Felt kind of sorry for Bethany Sarah seemed to be rubbing her nose in it that she had a boyfriend, again not the actions of a caring mother, more like a gloating teenager

I just can't understand what has happened to their relationship. Sarah never resented Bethany when she was younger, avoiding the usual cliches of teenage pregnancy 'ruining' her childhood. Aside from a couple of grumbles here and there, Sarah always doted on Bethany and consistently put her first.

Now both characters are stuck in a constant cycle of squawking at each other like a couple of demented cockatiels.

Are they taking her down the sociopath route like Botox Liz? I saw that smug look on her face as Callum bullied her elderly (and mentally ill on recent form) mother in the street.

I don't agree she always put Bethany first.
She was so young having her so of course some of her behaviour towards Bethany when she was young was understandable if horrible.
But I think she was only really interested in being mummy when she had a wedding to plan. Otherwise she'd just palm Bethany off on whoever would have her. She never really raised her just relied on Gail

It's no wonder Bethany turned into a Smart mouth selfish bitch with the role model she's had for the last 7 years

You're right Squealer. What I think I was trying to say was that Sarah was never really shown to resent Bethany, which seems to be a key feature of their relationship now. It's true that she did palm her off on Gail quite a lot but this was never portrayed as being because Sarah hated Bethany.

I am so tired of the Sarah, Bethany, Callum, storyline it is going nowhere and is so so boring, next week we will probably have David and kylie back and we will have more of the same, we need to see Sarah and Bethany involved with more characters than just Callum. Maybe then we might see some better performances from Sarah Lou. I won't hold my breath tho.

Sarah Lou is awful, but if she wants to look and behave like a simpleton that's up to her. Her brat on the other hand, I can't bear and wish she'd clear off back to Milan. After Corrie made such a hash of casting Bethany the first time, and got thrown an unexpected chance to redo their mistake, how is it even possible that the next choice is an even bigger colossal f**k up? Did the person who cast her have a white stick and guide dog by any chance? Because anyone with two working eyeballs can see that she would never and could never pass for 15!! In some of the scenes with Callum and his cronies she looks about 40!! The idea that's she's Sarah's is laughable when she looks too old to even be Gail's kid! Troweling on the wall plaster until she's whiter than Casper doesn't make her look any younger either.

True, like I know she loved Bethany but I think she could never reconcile her role as a mother with being a young teen herself - which is understandable. I think now she's had to do it single handedly for 7 years maybe she can't hack it or was just so bad at it she can't be bothered anymore.
You'd wonder what Bethanys life in Italy was really like
