Just back from vets to pick up flea stuff for dog, told they can't give it to me unless I bring dog in, it's the law apparently , anybody know anything about this law

Yeah I do.

We don't have a pet, but one of our friends called into the vets to get some on his way home from work to get some and was told the same.

What tripe, my husband has blood pressure pills & doesn't have to go every 6 months for repeat prescription, my dog goes for his booster jabs every 12months so it's not as if I'm irresponsible, who makes these stupid laws?

until the beginning of this year (when we had to have our dog put to sleep) we used to get it from our local kennels and we didn't have to take the dog with us.....
Absolutely

Of course that adds another £25 or more to the bill.
We have bought flea stuff of Pets at Home, and did not have our dogs with us.
Must be a new thing maybe?

I;'ve order flea treatment for my cat online. It asks for weight and age and gender and basic stuff and that's it. Never need to see my cat and I have it being delivered this week. It's also cheaper to get flea treatment anyway from places other then the vets.

Odd - I don't have to take my cat in, though I'm pretty sure they wouldn't sell the stuff I get without having seen the cat at some point. Maybe your vet has got their wires crossed?

I have to take my dogs in if they haven't been seen by my vet for a few weeks. It's to do with weighing them and giving them the correct flea/worming dose as too high a dose can be dangerous. My medium doodle and large doodle require different doses.

my son had to take his cat in, my dog weighs 15 kilo, flea treatment covers 15-20 kilo, I think I'd notice if he put on 5 kilo in 6 months as I say I do go every 12months for booster & they weigh him then 6 months seems too frequent to me

They have to weigh the dog/cat to know which product/dosage.

When was the last time the vet saw the dog, I get prescription stuff for fleas and worms from the vets and just pop in and pick it up but the vet knows the cats as they see them annually and does not ask to see them each time I get the stuff throughout the year.

Surely you wouldn't have to be that precise with flea medication?

You do around the upper and lower limits. Our vets just gives me it but ours are always there for something or another. Obviously you can buy some online but obviously not the prescription ones.
Also one, Advocate can be dangerous to some collies so vets might want to check the breed if its a dog they've not seen before if its a cross breed.

If the vet knows you and you pet, and you've been in recently for a health check and weigh in, they usually are ok IME.

They are obliged to ensure the animal is fit for the treatment and that it is the correct dose.

Perhaps this relates to very specific types of medication because I can buy anti-flea stuff online and chemists are now even stocking it too.

That's true, I quite like the safe guard that the vet sees ours before dispensing, if he didn't I would worry I think.

Apparently the law states that if the vet hasn't seen your pet for 6 months you have to take them in, dont envy my neighbour as they have 5 cats

Every 12 months, for me. I order for both my cat and dog. They don't ever ask to see my cat, just my dog.

Once it's been 12 months without them checking up on him, they won't hand any treatments over until they've seen him, otherwise they're fine.

Not heard of this. For medication they have to have been seen within six months, but not routine spot on and wormer. You tell them what size/breed of dog you have and they hand you the product for that size bracket over the counter. I'll be fetching some tomorrow so I'm going to ask about this.

Back from the vet earlier today, after making appointment, £92 lighter, ears & heart checked,& teeth, (can they get fleas on their teeth) me:"aren't you going to weigh him?"nurse: in a minute,oh we'll do it now "me thinking this is about training disillusioned dog owner, still wondering about neighbour with 5 cats
