The trouble with all the above though is that they have all been shown to lose money, have to sell off assets at points so it is very hard to keep track sometimes.

I disagree with Corrie and Hollyoaks. Carla is hands down the richest on the street and as for Hollyoaks, didn't Tony lose everything to Diane? I'm over a month behind in episodes so maybe he got his money back...but if not its definitely not Tony

U may be right about Ken. Whenever he moans about having been stuck on that same street for years I think hang on, he was a teacher for many years & a journalist. Those jobs should have paid him enough to be able to afford a bigger house in a nicer area if he wanted. His parents died many years ago as did his brother so he might have inherited a bit of money from them. He bought no 1 off uncle Albert (probably for less than the market rate) & also probably inherited any money Albert had when he died as I don't think he had any surviving relatives (other than Peter & Susan). He must get a decent pension from his teaching days & he's very sensible so may have put into another private pension or invested some money. Presumably he charges Tracy some rent for living in his house.

However, he did pay a lot of money for Tracy's lawyers during her murder trial (did he sell/remortgage the house to one of those equity release companies?) And he might have had to make payments to Deidre after their divorce due to his affair with Wendy Crozier. Also Tracy's probably nicked & sold anything valuable he owns in her trashy shop.

Still, I suppose with all the terrible tragedies that befall folk in soapland on a pretty regular basis, every last one of them wold be mega rich if they were properly compensated or received insurance payouts.
Plane and tram and bush crashes, spouses dying, gas explosions, wrongful arrest and imprisonment, it's fairly ridiculous that none of them ever, ever gets a penny.

He was the editor of a small, local newspaper which I don't imagine paid much - Journalism isn't well paid unless you make it to Fleet Street. Teaching certainly didn't pay well until Labour put wages up in the late 90s by which time his career was more or less finished so i don't think he'd have earnt that much. More than the minimum wage of the people at the factory etc for sure but nothing like the 'employers' of the street like Mike Baldwin and now Carla.

Plus, as you mention, they remortgage the house the Tracy's defence, i also think he helped Deardre during the 'Free the weatherfield One' time and he did spend a few years having to support Deardre and Tracy as well as maintaining a flat of his own after their divorce. Plus he had Daniel to pay maintenance for. A year in Canada won't have come cheaply either.

His Mum didn't work, his Dad was working class through and through in the days when people didn't have private pensions or even state ones to speak of so I doubt he inherited much, if anything at all.

So, Ken will certainly be better off than the likes of Beth, Kirk, Tyrone, I doubt he is any mathc for Nick, Carla or even Roy who will have squirreled away every penny and not had to pay much out.

Like with everything else connected with carla, she is ridiculously inconsistent!! One minute she's on the bones of her backside, having to go to any lengths to secure one order or the factory will have to close, the next she has enough money to buy into the Rover's & then gamble away thousands!! She will presumably get the insurance payout for her fancy flat & she does own all the factory shares now, but for how much longer??

I still doubt they had much money though, especially with their Kenneth having spent years in further education rather than getting out and earning. True, he'd have got a scholarship grant back then (much the same age and background as ny Mother who got a Grant for University and then Teacher Training) but it was very meagre, he certainly couldn't have given them any money out of it.

You're right though. The Barlows wouldn't have had much money at all. Frank did win some money in 1965 - the handsome sum of £500 - which he spent on a new house in Cheshire. This was his departure from the show. When Frank died in 1975 Ken was his only living relative so we assume he would have inherited the house sometime in 1975/76. I'm not sure that this has been mentioned. Even if the house was something substantial, prices in 1975 wouldn't have provided Ken with much of a return on its sale.

As for Ken's career as a teacher, well that was sporadic at best so I assume he would only have been on the lower pay increments for most of his career. He certainly didn't rise to any position of authority. Also, don't forget that he had to resort to working as a trolley pusher at Frescho to make ends meet!

Yes, Sally is probably the richest in terms of liquid assets as we've never been told she's spent her share on anything except perhaps paying off the mortgage but i doubt there was that much left as they bought their first house after Hilda left in 88 so nearly 25 years prior to the win and they won't have had to increase it by that much to move across the Street. Although, did she put any money into that business of Frank Fosters?

Kevin fairly asset rich as he used his winnings to buy the house outright and i think Tyrone's share of the Garage.

All the other business owners except Nick have been shown to be ripped off or lose money over the years, as you say except for Roy.

So, of the 'normal' people that haven't had lottery wins i'd say Roy as he's never over stretched himself or been a spendthrift. Most he's had trouble with was 'buying' Patience (Amy) off Tracy.

Sally is a strong contender. Don't forget that she also inherited £55,000 from her mother in the late 90s which Greg Kelly tried to steal it from her. I can't remember if he succeeded or not - Sally obviously managed to escape from him in the end. I guess that this was the money that she invested in her ill-fated hardware shop venture with Danny Hargreaves.

One point worth noting is that around 2004 the Websters were shown to be comfortable but not rolling in money. The main thing here was Sally's desire to send Rosie to stage school and then latterly Oakhill private school. They couldn't afford the fees outright and Sally realised that they had to earn more money so she pushed Kevin into expanding the garage and she took a job at Davenport's showroom.

Yes, i remember that first episode and frank's scorn towards Ken being 'up himself'. That storyline was the main reason my Mum watched back then, as I say she'd just started teaching and was living in a small terraced, 2 up,2 down with her parents so seeing somebody in a similar situation caught her interest ans of course, she's grown old with Ken. I hasten to add my grandparents were much more supportive and proud of Mum than Ken's were (although i don't think she ever came across as being 'above' herself or ashamed of her background) but when she was offered a grant for a PHD due to having got a first class Honors degree (rare back then, especially for a woman) my Grandad put his foot down saying enough was enough re study and she needed to start earning some money and contributing so even the 'nicest' families had that attitude.

As mentioned, My Mum was a teacher, from 1959 until 1993 and she was on one of the higher pay grades due to her degree and teacher training qualifications and being a head of department in large schools and she still earnt dreadful money by most people standards for a professional. It was considered a vocation rather than career so the feeling was people didn't need to be paid as much to do it. His Pension will have been affected too due to his keeping leaving, as you mentioned.

Frank's hous would have been worth something i'd have thought though of course inflation will have affected that during the early and mid 70s. When did David die? He might have inherited it from Frank and then spent it prior to his death.
