I hasten to add my grandparents were much more supportive and proud of Mum than Ken's were (although i don't think she ever came across as being 'above' herself or ashamed of her background) but when she was offered a grant for a PHD due to having got a first class Honors degree (rare back then, especially for a woman) my Grandad put his foot down saying enough was enough re study and she needed to start earning some money and contributing so even the 'nicest' families had that attitude.
Oh i wasn't offended, i actually took it as a back handed compliment that my knowledge is usually so good I should have known better!
As mentioned, My Mum was a teacher, from 1959 until 1993 and she was on one of the higher pay grades due to her degree and teacher training qualifications and being a head of department in large schools and she still earnt dreadful money by most people standards for a professional. It was considered a vocation rather than career so the feeling was people didn't need to be paid as much to do it. His Pension will have been affected too due to his keeping leaving, as you mentioned.
Frank's hous would have been worth something i'd have thought though of course inflation will have affected that during the early and mid 70s. When did David die? He might have inherited it from Frank and then spent it prior to his death.”
Interesting story kitkat! Your mum sounds like a very, very impressive person! What did she teach?
Back to Corrie. My jibe was exactly as you took it - a compliment! Your knowledge is always spot on ...apart from just then
As for Ken, he was a real bolshy, arrogant man in the early days. Ida wanted the best for him but Frank could see that his son was far from the blue eyed boy. In the first episode Albert Tatlock proclaims: "That college has turned you into a proper stuck up little snob Kenneth Barlow!". It wasn't just in the first episodes that he showed utter disdain for Coronation Street and its residents, he was still behaving like that in 1962. You may remember that he wrote an article that described most of the residents of the street in not-so-generous terms. He ended up having a fight with Len Fairclough in the Rovers over it.
David died before Frank, in 1970. He was survived by his wife Irma who would have inherited anything that he had.
