Freesat + BT Sports ?
Like many others I'm contemplating giving up the Sky subscription and getting a Freesat box.
1. Quite like the look of the Sky Freesat box (available for a one off fee £175). Browsing this forum it would seem that lots of people get the Humax boxes. Is there a particular reason for this? 2. On whatever box you get, will it allow me to watch BT Sports? |

For BT Sport over satellite you need a Sky viewing card that can be activated to allow viewing of the BT channels. You obviously don't get that with a Freesat (non Sky version) box, which is probably what you mean by the Humax box as I don't think Sky supply a Humax based box for their free service. According to the BT website you can get BT Sport via Freesat From Sky
http://bt.custhelp.com/app/answers/d...-sport-with-bt Scroll down to the FAQ "Can I get BT Sport with Freesat?" Though this thread on the BT customer forum suggests you might have fun persuading BT that the option does actually exist! https://community.bt.com/t5/BT-Sport...y/td-p/1337201 The only alternative would be to get BT broadband, Infinity would give you the most channel options. |

hi Chris
Thanks for the reply. I have BT broadband already so I'm thinking that my existing card (even when subs cancelled should allow me to watch BT sports) will be ok. |

The caveat is that you won't be able to record and will have to sift through lots of subscription only channels between the free ones in the guide and navigating around. |

The Freesat box does not have a slot to take a viewing card.
Very confusing that two competing systems have very similar names. |

Do you think Sky may have done that on purpose when coming up with something to combat the launch of Freesat?

You shouldn't need to get another box at all.
YOU DO NOT need to get another satellite receiving box. Out of subscription your existing box will act as a receiver and the old card will become a 'freesat from Sky' card automatically. As a BT ISP subscriber you might be entitled to a free box (that would need a working terrestrial aerial ideally) and that would allow you to view BT Sports via the internet connection... You may need to upgrade to BT TV? https://www.productsandservices.bt.c...port_pink_butt |

Mind you from what I can see you lose the ability to record unless you cough up about a tenner a month to Sky for that ability, even if you swap to a Freesat From Sky viewing card. |

The Freesat thing is confusing just a little.
![]() Ok, I have the original Sky box I got back in 1999 and it's still working just fine. I've never had the ability to record anything and don't require it now or in the future so losing that ability has never been a problem. The problem I have is that the original box was connected to the TV via a scart lead. Having bought a new TV I need a box with HDMI as the scart is oldschool. ![]() At present I've connected the old box via the aerial coax just so we can watch it. |

We've been subscribers with the full package for 16 years and Sky want to charge us an extra £7 a month for a new HD box.
Having paid them consistently for all those years I felt that they could've been more generous when all I want is an updated box. I don't want to take out another 12 month contract which includes the 'family package' which we won't watch anyway. That was the cheapest way the guy on the phone said he could upgrade my box. Well, sod 'em! We've decided to cancel our subscription. Let's see what they have to say about that. If they don't want my £64.50 a month for another 16 years then I won't lose sleep over it. I'm prepared to pay for a modern box but just feel a little disappointed that Sky wouldn't help out my loyalty. |

Haven't Sky supplied all the content your subscription paid for that is the limit of loyalty anyone should expect. |

You can only watch BT Sport via satellite using a Sky card. That means you need to be using either a Sky box or PC based system with a card reader and other required software.

I should have a look in your nearest Cash Generator or Cash Converters m8, I got a nice little multiroom HD box for £20 like new, it will do everything your old box does plus it has a HDMI output for your new telly!
![]() You will need to get your old card paired to the new box though |

Loyalty is worth nothing... Tell Sky you are cancelling and you will get a new box!

Just get a Chromecast and you can watch the BT channels through that.
Like you, I've decided to ditch the overpriced pay TV and have someone coming round tomorrow to install the dish. Have a humax freesat freetime box and a satellite card to cover the boxes its replacing; can't wait! |

I sent them another email last night telling them when I can be reached. Still waiting

You don't say what tablet you have but if it is able to have the BT Sport App on it then as you are a BT Broadband customer you should be able to stream it via the Chromecast.

Ah right Ok.
I can screen mirror the tablet to the TV as both are Samsungs. That's why I don't use the Chromecast. |

Could BT not design an app for the Humax box and allow subscription that way?
Also will the free BT Sport channel come to Freesat? |

No way - to do so they would have to hack the NDS encryption that Sky use and that is not going to happen even if it was possible.

I believe that companies should reward long term customers over and above what is supplied as part of the contract. Whilst some do, Sky dont.
