Good to know, thanks for replying
![]() Of course, you can manipulate it to a certain extent, but then again, a One Direction fan might as well genuinely want to listen to the same song more than 10 times a day

... and there's a maximum number of streams from an individual account (10 streams a day or a week? Not sure about the number!) that are counted for the charts. So you can't stream the same song on your computer, your laptop, ipad and phone in a loop, "create" sales and therefore manipulate the charts.
Of course, you can manipulate it to a certain extent, but then again, a One Direction fan might as well genuinely want to listen to the same song more than 10 times a day ![]() About the manipulation, I find it hilarious how 1D, Bieber, Cyrus, Gomez fans go crazy when the music video out and they always manipulate it with that refresh tactic to achieve VEVO record which is just so pointless as that constantly changes. What was even more hilarious when Harry falsely thanked the fans for breaking the record

Interesting, thanks for the update. And what are actual streaming services that are counted? Because I read that 1D had 2 million plays on Spotify. Is that also relevant? Hope I'm not bothering you, I'm genuinely interested in this and these digital ways of buying aren't very popular in my country - it is still mostly old school, going to the store and buying

What was even more hilarious when Harry falsely thanked the fans for breaking the record ![]() I think your question regarding streams is answered by the Official Charts Company in their news article today: Quote:
The group’s first single as a quartet, following the departure of Zayn Malik in March, debuts at the top of this week’s tally and earns the highest first-week streams for a single ever in the UK, racking up 2.03 million plays in its opening week across chart-reporting streaming services such as Spotify, Deezer, Apple Music and more.
So it's not just Spotify, because they never had more than 230k streams per day last week. That wouldn't add up to 2 million I don't know how many more streaming services there are, but I think those three are the main ones.

I've liked some of their other songs but this one proves that they could burp or fart and put it on CD and it would still get to number one.

Well, VEVO is another matter, I have no idea whether they count every time you watch a video or whether there's also a daily limit...
I think your question regarding streams is answered by the Official Charts Company in their news article today: So it's not just Spotify, because they never had more than 230k streams per day last week. That wouldn't add up to 2 million I don't know how many more streaming services there are, but I think those three are the main ones. So these 2 million streams gave them extra 20 000 copies. It is good that streaming has limitations, but new artists without a major hit, independent artists who aren't as popular without promo will struggle now more than ever - I have seen that it can come to 30 places of a difference, for example to be no. 20 in only sales chart but be no. 50 in official chart when everything is combined. As for this single, I'm not surprised to see mixed reaction. Story of My Life deserved to be no. 1 but this doesn't because it is very meh song, trying to sound like Maroon 5 type of song. |

I see it's dropped from number 1 to number 9 after one week. Poor, especially considering the woeful songs above it!

For some reason, people in the UK need to hear songs on the radio or watch the music video to buy a single on iTunes, rather than actively seeking for music by themselves. Drag Me Down may well have dropped down to #9 but watch how the single performs when the music video is released. I'm almost certain it will climb back into the top 5. Look at the chart runs for Story Of My Life and Steal My Girl: SOML = 4-5-8-10-3-2 <--- peaked in its 6th week on the chart. SMG = 3-11-7-9-3 <--- repeaked in its 5th week on the chart. Drag Me Down will have a similar chart run although I'd be gobsmacked if it actually climbed back to #1 again. |

This is the downside to OA/OS. The initial sales has come mainly from die hard fans who follow 1D on Twitter and Facebook and found out they had a single out pretty on that Friday morning. There's little radio airplay or music video to keep the interest levels up.

Personally the song is extremely weak as a debut song from a new album and the only reason it got to no1 is coz of the surprise release had it been heard a few weeks prior to release I don't think it would have got to no1, I can't see the track climbing at all once the video is released and if it does it won't be that much.

Oops!!! It does look like I'm defending the song here but I don't rate Drag Me Down either, but as you guys have also posted, the single is bound to get some sales boost (however big or small) when the music video is released.
I agree 100% with zeze88 about Story Of My Life. Of all the 1D singles, this really did deserve to be a UK #1 imo. |

The funny thing about some artist songs is that the good ones that should be no1 don't manage it yet the rubbish ones do, it completely baffles me, they will struggle this era if they don't get out the sort of song we all expect from them
They are still popular concert act, but it can't be denied that they are struggling more and more with their music after the initial hype, in weeks after all of their loyal fans buy/stream their music. I mean, few days after the 1st week hype Drag Me Down wasn't even in Top 10 on Spotify list. |

Thats true, although I do think they also struggled with their last era in the UK - they only had 2 singles and the album sold only around 560K which is their lowest selling album so far.

Apart from the US can you tell me any other country where they have sold more than 590k of their last album?
Is Four the lowest selling album in the UK so far? Yes it is. That is all I implied. Some 1D fans get so defensive even when you make argumentative points. Its not like I am spreading lies or am I one of those who just come and love to wind people up saying they are talentless little boys who don't play instruments... |

But I am not talking about other countries, I am talking about the UK which is the 2nd biggest market after US. You can't look at countries like France or Italy which in general have small amounts of sales.

I'm pretty certain that the U.S. Isn't the biggest market and the UK isn't the 2nd biggest market, I believe that China is the biggest market in the world attest it was a few years back

He's talking about for One Direction. In terms of music Sales overall the US is 1st and the UK is 3rd. As far as I know, china doesn't figure in the top 5.

Do we really have to insist on calling each album cycle an era?

Are you forgetting Zayn left in middle of the era. I doubt they could release another song contractually due to Zayn's vocals been on the record and it would am sure be pretty complicated to re record without Zayn's vocals
So, they would have struggled with the sales with or without Zayn/3rd single. Besides, fans were so into the idea for that one song to be the 3rd single, but Syco of course missed the opportunity because they were on tour. |
