As others have said , a fta sports news channel would be nice on freeview. As to live sports I suspect it be pick & mix. BT will not want to get one hooked on a free channel so I guess some CL football. Rugby. Conference football.
One area they could do is their magazine shows like V.S.P.O.

Let's see want it brings to the table.

Your right that a FTA general sports channel would be nice, something that could compliment Motors TV.

They prove that it can be done and looking at how the minor racing events are now filmed and produced, I'm assuming costs of production are much less now?

Of course the problem is that most sports appear to have signed up expensive rights agreements with broadcasters, so it prevents many lower budget options appearing.

Best hope would be getting Eurosport to consider FTA like in Germany, but with BT and Sky paying them to be part of packages ..chances slim.

BT clearly are just using it as an endless promo channel with the odd bit of sport. It's annoying as a sports fan that this isbt going to be the sports channel Freeview needs, but I guess the money paid means making a FTA sports channel would be very difficult these days.

Is the channel not FTA on satellite? If not then suspect it will become so if they are broadcasting games on it.

Mind you does it have a purpose on Freesat as its not like you can subscribe with your viewing card number. Lol

I think it be a good idea if members post any live sporting events on this channel so members don't miss anything.

Hope all find the thread useful.
I would just like to thank the OP, for trying to start what could become a useful thread.

It's weird how you don't miss things when they arnt on nornal TV. I can see how sports that rely on the casual suffer from lack of main TV coverage.

IE. The CL has been tucked so far away behind BT this season that most don't know when games are played or who is playing who. I bet most fans have no clue who is in the EL this time?

I can see why Sky think if they don't mention it then quite a few of their sports fans won't miss it.

Will be interesting to see how or even IF BT market the games on showcase? Could easily just choose not to tell people about them as such and try and create the image that you need a subs for the CL and EL this time.

The sole purpose of BT Sport Showcase is to keep UEFA (and their sponsors) sweet. Had BT not committed to some games FTA, the chances are ITV would have retained their live CL rights, and possibly some EL as well.

Having said that, nearly everything BT shows has highlights available FTA anyway (CL, EL, Bundesliga and Premiership rugby on ITV, PL and SPFL on BBC, National League on their website). Creating BT-branded highlights programmes out of these rights wouldn't adversely affect subscribers, but would be a better way of regularly "showcasing" the BT Sport package than a promo loop that nobody will actually watch.

Your right about it being a pointless channel in its current form, however I suspect that is what BT want. They dont want people tuning in to a free sports channel when the way to get free BT sports is to get their broadband package.

I have noticed they are making it really clear this is a promotional channel on the screen now. Wonder if they have been told they have to do this?

So it's becoming more BT Showcase than BT Sport Showcase then already.

I can't see BT getting their money back in subs for the CL and EL as it just doesn't seem to have the pull without the FTA marketing that ITV used to do. It will be interesting to see how dire the figures are for the first game on this channel.

Perhaps some people will now realise that this channel isn't going to be the wonderful FTA sports fest they thought it would be, and just an occasional channel for BT to promote their pay services and fill their UEFA obligation by showing the odd free game in low resolution.

I still think it's to the detriment of the majority of viewers that ITV weren't able to retain their CL FTA rights, and we are unable to look forward to seeing regular FTA games on ITV in HD as we have done for years. A real loss.

Here in N. Ireland we are fortunate enough (at least most viewers are i.e. those who can receive Saorview from ROI) to have FTA CL on both Tuesday and Wednesday nights with TV3 (Tues) and RTE2 HD (Wed) covering a game each week as well as highlights of other games. Our only drawback is that TV3 is not yet in HD on DTT although it is in HD on Sky for ROI viewers.

Yes Howard, Saorview is great for CL on TV3 and RTE2 HD on Tuesday and Wednesday nights. 3e will have Europa Lge group stage matches as well. I believe TV3 HD will start on Saorview later this year!

I fully accept what this station is. People don't seem to realise the costs of producing Sky Sports News, and nothing BT has done has suggested they want to take this on, especially as a free channel.

However, bearing in mind BBC 3 manage to produce their 60 second news bulletins with a staff of three people, whether it would be worth having a skeleton staff and a broom cupboard studio to have say a two minute sports news update on the hour at peak? Doing this would allow those promo videos to be seen by a lot more people while they wait for it - also be a boost for the bt sport brand awareness. They could even seek a sponsor and make some money out of it - must be plenty of companies who would be interested in a potential audience of every sports fan in the land.

I still don't think you understand that BT don't really even want this Freeview channel, its more they have to have it to meet the needs of UEFA.

There were suggestions that they only wanted a Freeview channel which would broadcast once a fortnight on a tues, wed and Thurs as the space was advertised to other broadcasters to use. Clearly no such demand for this ans looks like BT had to pay for the whole lot.

BT don't want you watching this. If the customer thinks football is free, why pay? That's why they have burried it and don't talk about it at all.

Not on BT Sport but some good motorsport choice on Freeview today.

ITV 4 - BTCC (now until 6pm racing live)

Motors TV - Bitish GT (12.30 onwards live racing)

BBC 1 - F1 - 1pm start

Some great motorsport on Freeview today.

When ITV4 moves, what are the chances of BT showcase's bit rate increasing?
On Saturday afternoon I'm struggling to read the results on BT showcase.
Probably zip all chance, but you never know.
