O Danny Boy.
If I was ever an actress and was required to weep, if someone off stage quietly hummed the tune I'd be in floods of tears immediately. Others are Jerusalem, the Lord's My Shepherd, Scarboro' Fair - which if there is a power cut makes me feel brave yet sad when I sing it........... (music - The Lark Ascending by Vaughn Williams) I forgot 'Ride on Time' - when my daughter was growing up we had many problems - terrible areas we lived in sometimes and health problems etc - sometimes we would go ice skating and I remember us skating fast to this song - it got us away from all our troubles actually and in our minds - ever since I associate this song with putting two fingers up at all the bad stuff in the world, and of course my daughter when she was young. It makes me sad though as she lives abroad now so I don't see her much and wish we could have had a better life then - listening to it now I have tears in my eyes - but it is an inspirational song to me. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=igJJi34b4dQ |

The Rains of Castamere
Spoiler warning: the episode of Game of Thrones named after this song has major plot developments, so if you're a fan but haven't yet watched this episode then I'd highly advise you not to look it up on Wikipedia etc. |

The beautiful song Stay by the under-rated group Hurts. The words remind me of the time before my husband moved to England after I met him on holiday.
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=1nP3XB7hrFo And their song Help which Elton John played piano on. I actually received an email sent to fans to sing backing vocals and I thought it was a joke and didn't go. I found out afterwards it was true and have kicked myself ever since. ![]() https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=88Xx...=RD88XxoddW9iY |

Ride on Time has the same effect on me. It takes me back to when my daughter went to Florida as a Nanny for six months when she was 20. She got homesick by Christmas and arrived on the door step on Christmas Eve - what a wonderful Christmas present! This track was so popular back then; I love it and have it as my daughter's ringtone. Listening to it right now!!!

Rather apt right now is this one. Takes me back to my first ever boyfriend. I've only got to hear the first bar and I go to pieces.

Summer (The First Time) by Bobby Goldsboro
I just can't listen to it as it makes me sob and it's a shame because it's a really beautiful song. Other songs that make me cry are:- Clouds Across The Moon by The Rah Band Everybody's Gotta Learn Sometime by The Korgis In This Life by Madonna Luka by Suzanne Vega |

Thought of another song that makes me cry , George Benson's The greatest love of all.
I heard this song when I was considering suicide while in an abusive relationship, the song struck a chord and I was able to leave the relationship and turn my life round. Song still makes me cry though

Great stuff to read through. I've listened to many of these songs myself, and followed up quite a few – even if they're not my kind of thing. Thankyou everyone!

This one always makes me cry. It's probably the most raw and honest song I've ever heard.

I'm not a cryer, in fact I can't remember the last time I cried but this song is really emotional. A song for his mate who committed suicide. Brilliant song.

Slipping Through My Fingers by ABBA It's about a mum's regret about how quickly her daughter has grown and is off to school. I usually skip it on the album to be honest, and if I do get to the end I'm a mess. I'm not even a mother but I kind of think about it from the little girl's point of view. Unless you're very lucky, adult life is hard and full of disappointments, things we all thought we'd do years ago but never did, a bit like the words of the song. I think sometimes we'd all like to go back to that part of childhood around 5 to about 7 or 8 and start again, just enjoy a simple life with mum and dad and siblings again for a while and then maybe make different choices as we grow. But the song just rams home the point that once a happy time has gone, its gone. ![]() It's part of why I get annoyed when some people on the music forum say ABBA are 'cheesy', even if you don't like them, they wrote songs that mean a lot to a lot of people. This. I listened to this sitting downstairs whilst my daughter was upstairs asleep on her last night at home with me before she left home to move in with her boyfriend. I can't listen to it anymore. Also Angel, Sarah McLachlan. |
