Max is his own worst enemy he really is. The funny thing is he's a reasonably intelligent man - he was running a successful business until he decided to take on Phil Mitchell. But he's also a complete idiot at times which is why he's in prison. As for Max being a terrible father I think that's a bit harsh. He genuinely cares for his children (which is a lot more than can be said for some fathers). He just doesn't think of others before he acts.
