My opinions (virtually all negative) are based on having the box from first release.
If someone bought it as their first PVR, they wouldn't know how bad the UI is and maybe would accept it as a good box.
However, given that the PVR should now be a nice mature well set up piece of machinery with an excellent UI based on the best bits from all previous PVR's, this fails.
What exactly is quicker than the Fox T2? I may have missed something....The other things you mention that are lacking are also deal breakers...”

That's how I feel too. I've had so many pvrs and I don't feel technology has moved on much with any of them tbh. I loved my old Inverto and Digifusion units and I bet people still love their Topfields compared to what's on offer now.

I think having af123 and his brilliant custom firmware has left me a bit spoiled and I want a pvr as good or better than that, but I don't think that's going to happen.

I've not bothered even going down to look at them, but Humax are well known for their abysmal UI's and remotes, the only exception is the Freetime box, and that interface and remote came from Freetime.

I would have hoped that a Freeview Play box would come with a UI and remote designed by Freeview Play?, but perhaps that isn't the case?.

I like the remote control layout, and prefer the numbers at the bottom out of the way, as they are hardly ever used. Most of the regularly used buttons can be reached relatively easily with the thumb. something that was much harder with the HDR-FOX T2 remote control.

I have the freetime box and just got the 4000T (which have had on back order since the Euronics trade show back in April where I first seen it) and must admit yes there are a few things that could b improved, but the recording on auto hasn't failed yet, where as I stopped using the freetime box to record as it was not good on auto and often missed the beginning/end of scheduled programmes. The only thing I am missing do far is the remote being added to the harmony database and a remote record app.

Hi All - I bought a 4000 on the first day - I bought a 9200 on the first day too - but that one has faded softly away - I now want to use the 4000 as a home to distribute recorded stuff to pc's and tablet around the house - but I'm missing something - probably skill!

I'd like to use something like Kodi and it nearly works - I can see all the video stuff - but it wont play.

I also want to watch it on my Samsung Smart TV - it sees everything too but wont play it either

Has anybody used this set up to stream stuff from the 4000

It's a great box and I'm sure that Humax will make it better - I can be patient - but I'd really like to learn how to stream stuff

Help

I'm having great difficulty in trying to like the remote. It's not really laid out ergonomically for me ( I know this will be a Marmite situation.).
I rarely use the numeric keys so it was great when they were out of the way and allowed easier access to the buttons that were constantly used. No dedicated info button. Having to press that + button to get things like the EPG to act properly etc is a pain.
The OK button and surrounding direction, return button etc, really need a bit more definition/separation. The record button is too easily hit when using the Fwd/back buttons etc. Although the Fox-T2 remote wasn't the best, it was far easier to get around and had better functions than the new one.......Of course IMO...

Hi Nigel,
To be honest, I didn't think a UI could be this bad, but, there you have it, it can....
Apparently Freeview Play have made the UI etc. open source to a certain extent, to allow all of the manufacturers to individualise their products if they so want. A big mistake, IMO, especially as Humax seem to have cocked it up completely.
Not sure what the original UI was/is like, maybe Humax haven't done anything and this is it....
Meantime I'm still using my T2 and the 4000T is just there in case the T2 finally dies completely....

I'm not sure of the point of Freeview Play at this stage. All that going back does is lead you to the catchup apps, which are there anyway. Maybe it will evolve into something really good in the future????
Anyway, I'm on the lookout for an excellent basic PVR, not bothered about FP, with a decent remote and nice looking UI. Must be newish so it has some legs. If anyone has any recommendations....

You could simply wait and buy the 2TB version, then you will not need to invalidate your guarantee!

Yes, the following quote was taken from http://www.whathifi.com/news/humax-a...w-play-set-box
"Humax has implemented a new compact design for the 4000T, as well as a leather-look top which comes in either Mocha (pictured) or Cappuccino finishes. A third model, with a black 'Nero' finish, will be available soon with a 2TB hard drive, exlusively through Humax's website and will cost £299."

I think that the names are more stupid than the colours.

Any news on a software update to sort the smoothness and general bugs in the box?

No idea, but historically Humax are VERY slow with updates, and tend to add as many bugs as they cure.

Think I would like the remote record app first. Think that's high on my priority list

What do you mean by smoothness?, and which bugs are you referring to?

Speed of any information in the EPG loading
The continual flashing of the "HD available" notification.
Speed of navigation of EPG
Programme images not loading in EPG
On demand apps loading with blank icons.
Refinement of skipping 24 hours on EPG
A better system for skipping forwards and back while in playback.
Automatic retune for new channels like Youview.
Retaining scheduled recording data when a retune happens.

I could go on.

Good grief! Apart from the 3 tuners, the box sounds awful.

Most of those are not bugs.

I quite like it, and have been using mine for over two weeks without any problems.

I figured they were as my internet connection is fine, As part of the Freeview Play certification is it not a requirement for the DVRs to keep scheduling information after retunes? The slowness of navigating the EPG compared to the much older Humax HDR T2 is a bit of an unpleasant experience as it stands. Surly this is not seen as bug free OS running on the box as if it is then its a bit poo on the part of Humax.

I should also say I am a big fan of Humax.
I have used them for many, many years.
I'm not just ripping into the company Quarry, I Just hope they improve the product so it functions better than the older devices it will replace. At the moment it does not achieve this.

I've been trying to work that out. With out access to the last D-book 7 and the new D-book 8 it's hard to tell.

As far as I can tell it is not currently a requirement. It will be a requirement on at least freeview play products newly certified from April 2016 when D-book 8 fully comes into affect.

Don't have any problem with the 'HD available' notification
EPG is a bit of a dog....OK, more than a bit!!....
Images are erratic in loading...
No blank icons in the on demand apps so far...
Forward/back doesn't always work using the OK button and left right.
Auto retune would be nice, but not really a bug.
Retaining data still a hangover from previous boxes and would be nice if it went. not a bug though(?)
Yes you could go on, it's not really a satisfying experience at the moment.
