Well, I didn't have UKTV Player before and I still don't have it now, after the software update.

Also how do I get remote record functionality? Is there an app to download from Google Play?

Looks to me as Humax have released the software update before the apps are available. No UKTV player here,and no app available for IOS or Android. Confusing ???

Previous comments tended to be either for or against the new box when compared with the Fox T2. I find myself somewhere in the middle - there are things that are definitely an improvement, but in other respects it is a backward step. The good things are the three tuners and the Freeview Play functionality that provide features I really needed. Unfortunately these are counterbalanced by useful features of the Fox T2 that have gone missing. The most irritating of these is the loss of the skip button. Using skip on existing recordings is still possible, but only with the counter intuitive method of pressing OK to bring up the Time Line and then using the Right or Left arrow key.
The corresponding ability to skip back or forward when a live transmission has been paused has gone completely. Even more irritating to me is the loss of the ability to skip a day at a time in the Guide since I like to sit down on Sunday and set all the programs I want to record for the following week.
A minor irritation is the omission of any front panel display. This means that there is no indication that the boot up process is proceeding and no information on the currently received channel.
What this has meant in practice is that I keep the 4000T purely for making and watching recordings, while still using my trusty Fox T2 for live viewing, but not everybody will have that advantage..

That was posted when the FVP-400T was first released for sale. The jump function has now changed. Back then it skipped to lunch time programmes for the day jumped to, now it skips to the same time of day that you were looking at in the guide.

If you've paused live TV or are chase-playing a program that is still recording then you need to press the "play" triangle to bring up the time bar and you can skip by moving the time thing with the left/right button as you do with the "OK" button in playback mode.

But of course, if your chase-playing a live TV show then it drops out of playback mode when the recording finishes and you have to go back into recordings to play it from where you left off.

The thing that annoys me at the moment is that often when the box comes out of standby it doesn't recognise any recordings on the drive (although the space free indicator is accurate) and it needs to be unplugged and full reboot before it finds the stored programs.

If it has made any recordings since it forgot about the library, those show but none of the history does. When you reboot the new ones disappear and the old ones come back.

I am trying to fix this by leaving the box on all the time.

Thanks to Paul_DNAP for the information on using skip with live broadcasts. Unfortunately the instructions are slightly misleading. I spent some time trying to get these to work because I assumed that the pause button had to be pressed first. In fact only the play button has to be pressed to bring up the time bar, then the left and right buttons will skip back or forward. The skip time can be set in Playback Options in Settings.
Thanks also to Luis Essex for the information on jumping a day in the Guide. I have to say that I still think that the omission of a dedicated skip button was a mistake as it involves much more complication to achieve the same results..

If you just press the right or left button the time bar comes up, no need to press the play button first.

I'm going to have to start keeping an eye on this thread. Me, my wife, her brother and his gf are planning to get my in laws a new PVR for Christmas. They're currently using an ancient Top Up TV recorder that really is getting to the end of its life. I've not owned a Humax PVR myself but I've used one, know know plenty of people who have them and have been very pleased with theirs.

So it's disappointing to read how many problems there have been and how unhappy people are with the 4000T, it seemed almost like the default choice. It does sound like Humax are - maybe - starting to iron out some of the issues. My in laws are reasonably tech savvy but I don't want to land them with something completely unreliable. They like me and I'd like to keep it that way!

I'd have considered the Panasonic but the extra tuners on the Humax would make that a better option - so that my father in law no longer has to turn off the TV because my mother in law has two programmes recording and has gone to bed! I'd consider the YouView box but I'd be concerned they'd stop doing software updates for it far sooner than they would the 4000T.

Being undecided myself, but wanting a back-up box urgently because of worrying symptoms in my few-years-old Humax and Vestel boxes, I went for a "new" BT YouView box* on eBay, where BT customers who've got them as freebies are selling them straight on @ +/- £80.

Some of the choices they've made re navigation and layout annoy me, but this PVR is solid and reliable, and I feel sure that the YouView "rules" mean all YouView boxes will get the updates they need for a long time to come.

I ordered one for a friend whose elderly TVOnics had died and she's taken to it very easily.

We can buy 2 of these for less than the price of one new flaky PVR these days

BT are in advanced talks to buy the Youview brand outright. The only thing holding up the imminent sale is the price being demanded by the BBC though this likely to be resolved soon. Once this is taken in house I suspect only BT customers will be getting any further support.

One of the reasons for the sale is that BT want to upgrade the hardware to compete with Sky Q and Virgin Tivo. Your investment may not have been that wise after all.

Implying that all ex-BT customers with BT YouView boxes will be left in the lurch? As well as consumers with TalkTalk and Humax Direct? As well as consumers currently spending £200 on the 1tb Humax from John Lewis?

I don't believe that BT's plans will have any impact on the contract to maintain YouView boxes to function as originally intended.

Plus, I just needed a backup Freeview HD PVR, record 2 whilst watching live or a recording (no catchup or apps were needed, they are a bonus if you can cable your box to your router).

It's a bargain @ £80 that will be superior to jeffersbnl's inlaws' TopUpTV box - compare the currently-available alternatives

That can be quite a lot of money to some people, so yes investment.

Well why would you assume that BT are going to maintain boxes for ex-BT customers etc. especially as they intend to replace the current hardware with something completely new. There will no longer be any such animal as Youview it will get a complete rebranding.

Ooooh, potentially very nice. I would love to be able to partner this with my Humax Freesat box, but if that were not possible I have to say that this might tempt me to get a 4000T to replace my Panasonic Freeview PVR then use this in a second room. Neat, though sadly no Amazon Prime .....

Yes, another bit missing. If I could get all of the major channels in HD (and by that I mean what we get on Freeview now plus the likes of More4HD, ITV2HD, etc.) I'd be tempted to subscribe. That said, every time that I've tried to use TVPlayer, on several devices, the lip sync always seems well off to me.

I'm thinking of getting 4000t after Christmas when I got enough money have they fixed the ui so not slow anymore or have they got any more annoying problems I like one of these because then I can record 4 programmes at once at the moment I got fox t2 but sometimes there more than 3 programs on at once and fox t2 can only record 2 at once

It's improved slightly, but, is still very sluggish and you will miss several features of the T2. Whatever you do, don't get rid of your T2 if it's fully functional.....

Still wary of buying this for my in-laws for Christmas given all the negative reviews around online. I think they'd appreciate being able to acccess iPlayer etc so a 2000T isn't an option and given the questions over the future of Youview I'd be wary of picking up one of those boxes. The Panasonic has the outdated interface and I think they'd occasionally make use of more than two tuners so the 4000T would seem to be the way to go. Just reading all the comments of having to regularly reboot it, recordings or showing up / going missing and it being very sluggish have made me very unsure about buying one for them. They're not that old but I don't want to make their viewing difficult! Am I right to still be wary? Have the most recent upgrades improved matters? They'd be coming from an old Top Up TV recorder so their expectations won't be that high, but it's got to fundamentally work and be reliable! Thanks.
