I want the Carter Show back
Probably an unpopular opinion on here, but I feel like ever since they stopped with the focus on the family, the show lost focus, now I do agree the show needed to move on from the Mick-Shirley-Dean crap, and needed to serve the other cast members, but since the show moved into rotating around other people again it's just failed to be entertaining. The Beales have been evil and boring since the reveal, the only interesting Mitchell's ATM are Ben and Sharon, the Mitchell sisters have been left to rot, can we see some Hubbard evil?, the Masoods have been ruined with the Kush/Stacey crap but hopefully it will be turned around the stillbirth storyline, while the Max framing stuff is just predictable. I am really gonna miss Carol, the best scene in months was her scene in front of the mirror. Also like the Cokers too, especially Pam. But I digress, the Carters in the Vic gave the show a focus, and I miss a large strong stable unit in the square, there doesn't really feel like on ATM. I especially want more Linda scenes - Kellie Bright is amazing and the rape storyline needs more follow-up centred on Linda. A baby would not solve anything, especially with a Dean living just around the corner. I miss the Carter unit, but I do not miss Stan or Babe - they both stayed longer than their arc entailed.

It's been nice to have a bit of a break from them and having the focus more on Lee and Nancy instead. Mick/Shirley/Linda/Dean was getting too much.
There was also a lot surrounding Ronnie/Roxy/Charlie for a while, so it's been nice to have a break from them too. I usually enjoy the Mitchell storylines and I think that Abi will get some karma soon (yay). I think it's a good thing that other characters are getting the limelight as it would be repetitive and boring. |

I like the Carters too. However I'm actually glad Stan and Aunt Babe have gone. Babe's going to return for Cora's silver bullets but I'll be glad if it's temporary. I like Linda and I too would have liked more of Linda's story where the rape was concerned but to be honest I don't want any more rape storyline as it was handled so badly. I'm actually sick of Shirley, Buster and Dean. I used to love Shirley too. Mick is someone I've missed but he needs a new story away from Shirley and the rape story.
As for the Mitchells, one of my fave characters, Ronnie has become boring. Roxy has gone past her sell by date and Sharon is my least favourite character in the whole of Eastenders. Jay has been underused and needs more storylines. He's played by a talented young actor. I like Ben and the Abi / Paul relationships. Ben and Paul are so hot together! The couple are very well acted. I can't wait for the truth to come out about them being lovers. I like the Masoods but I feel bringing Dean into their story was a very bad idea. He's ruined them. I would have preferred someone else, a new character to be Roya/Jade's dad. I'm not keen on Stacey and Martin together or her with Kush. I will be glad when Mick and Linda have a new storyline and I'm looking forward to having them back. I've gone off Nancy. She started out as a streetwise, feisty and contemporary character but she has become so boring hanging around the pub and never leaving the Square. There doesn't seem to be much point to her now. |

I prefer the show when a good variety of characters are featured. I think we've had that since late spring. I'm also glad we're off the Mick/Shirley/Dean insult train that carried on up through Stan's death, and I'm glad that baby Oliver is Mick's child.
That said, I like the Carters very much. All of them. I even think that Dean is an interesting character despite the fact that I want him to pay for what he did. The rape storyline wasn't handled as well as it should have been, but I did like that it gave Linda and Mick a chance to shine. They're my favorite couple on the show by far and very believable. I really look forward to seeing some development in Lee and Nancy this autumn, as well as finding out exactly what Babe was up to with Heather's nasty mum. |

I am relieved the focus shifted, for the longevity of the characters.
They heavily dominated 2014 and the early part of this year. I want the show to be more ensemble rather than the often block storytelling EastEnders do. |

I don't.
The Carters were enjoyable in their first six months, but after that they really started to grate (Linda and Lee excepted). In the last year, I've actually enjoyed the show more when the Carters weren't in it. |

You need to put a spoiler alert. Not everyone knows about the stillbirth.

I miss Shirley away from the rape story - she needs to find out about Dean and they need to allow her to move on to new material, I still like her though. I also want to see Babe back and more of Buster. I don't really care much for Linda/Mick/Lee/Nancy. I miss Stan though.

I don't miss overused Shirley - she was hogging too much screentime. I want to see more of Mick/Linda/Lee/Nancy. Dean needs to pay for his crime and hopefully he will be forced to leave or he hands himself to the police.

The break has been lovely
The Mitchells, The Cokers, The Beales, The Masoods and Stacey have all had their chances to shine over the last few months. It's been a wonderful balance. Although we did have those weeks specifically centred on Shirley, Dean and Buster though which was great as although it was carter territory, it was not all the carter members involved. But The Carters will likely rise to prominence again soon which is expected. |

I do like the Carters but I'm glad they aren't prominent at the moment. We needed a break from them. Danny Dyer had to take "sick leave" from the show more than once because he was so exhausted from the heavy filming schedule. I'm sure the Carters will be back to the forefront soon. We have Lee's depression storyline, Nancy's epilepsy and the conclusion of the rape storyline. The Carters will be going to Ramsgate soon and we will see that in late summer/early September.
EastEnders should be an ensemble show. I think the producers realised that a lot of fans were getting sick of the Carters and the repetition of scenes so they had to act fast and give them a long overdue break. |

Once they've moved on from the Dean crap I'd love for Mick & Linda to have a big wedding that involves all the square. Much like Pat & Franks wedding.

They're boring and annoying. I've taken to Linda and Lee but I struggle to give a damn about the rest of the family. |

I'd like a Carter wedding. I wonder if Babe will turn up with a trifle now Stan has died? She seemed to turn up for him really with her trifle as an excuse to visit. I hope she doesn't make a huge batch for all the guests! I would prefer a wedding storyline for them after all the rape misery. Will they have any of their former friends from their last home at the wedding and reception? They don't seem to have any. I expect half the market traders like Shrimpy will turn up to make up the numbers. Obviously the reception will be in the pub instead of somewhere swanky. That bugs me about soaps. The stags and hens end up together in the same local pub on stag / hen nights and the wedding reception will be in there too. I really truly hope Dean and Shirley don't ruin it. Shirley already had a drama at Phil's wedding and it will be so annoying if she ruins Linda and Mick's big day with Dean at her side. I've had ENOUGH of Dean!!!! If that happens I'll despair of Eastenders. I hope DTC won't be that predictable. Hopefully TPTB will let the Carters finally move on. I'm not saying it should be all roses round the door which would be boring but they need a new direction. I'm glad Sylvie, Babe and Stan have gone. It was getting a bit much with so many elderly characters. I know some fans love the oldies, like Vaslav37
but I really like the younger cast members like Vincent, Mick and Linda plus the much younger characters like Abi and Jay.

Can't believe I'm saying this but I miss Linda and Mick
and I'm not even a fan of them. I would love to see a big wedding of Mick and Linda like Pat and Frank's big wedding in 1989. Would love to see Mick and Linda finally getting married because they deserve it. I really hope there's no drama and Shirley better not ruin their wedding. She ruined Kevin/Denise and Sharon/Phil's wedding so I hope she will be on her best behaviour.

Lee, babe, buster, tina and nancy. I also love johnny and lady di and indefinatly want him to return. Dean is interesting but a unlikeable person. Slyvie i need to see more of to come to judgement on. Shirley and mick are stale but im ready to bear mick returning in social scenes. That leaves elaine as the only completely awful one. |

No more Carters, please - EE is better with them on the back-burner.
TPTB really tore the backside out of it by having them continously on screen, and as more Carter airtime meant more vile Shirley and even viler Dean, with a side-serving of grimy Buste and dreadful Tina. I am happier without them. |

It feels strange the Vic family not being prominent as that has always been the case throughout EE history. I miss them. I don't buy the theory that they are unpopular in comparison to other families backed up by dubious claims about the ratings. A couple of weeks ago, a thread was started along those lines during a Mitchell heavy week only to die down as soon as EE was beaten by both episodes of Emmerdale and an out of slot Coronation Street on the Thursday. It didn't do particularly well on the Friday either while the tabloid critics and social media savaged the episodes. However, I don't believe this is proof that the Mitchells are unpopular, just that ratings cannot be relied upon to definitively say that one family is popular and another isn't. I think the Mitchells are popular but I also think the Carters are too. Outside of the Lucy storyline, the only eps to break 8m in overnights in 2014 were Carter episodes. While I appreciate that people have characters they enjoy seeing over others, they can't take it for granted that their opinion is representative of what the entire audience is thinking. Ratings rise temporarily for big storylines that are the focus of extra promotion and not just ones that feature the Mitchells. It happens for all of the main families. Everyday episodes, other than being lower in the summer, don't fluctuate all that much generally speaking - Carter episodes don't do any worse than usual and Mitchell/Beale ones don't do discernibly better. Then there's freak occurrences like the one mentioned above, where EE despite being of very good quality fell behind both eps of Emmerdale and an out of slot Corrie. Quote:

There's no proof of the Carters unpopularity but equally there's little proof of their popularity. The Mitchells are a tried and tested success story stretching back 25 years. The Carters are johnny come latelys who came in with a bang, took over the show and (in my opinion) have failed to integrate successfully with the rest of the cast. It really does feel like The Carter Show when they're dominating because it might as well be a spin off starring the Carters.
I'd like to know why I'm supposed to care about these newcomers. Just what the hell did they do to deserve The Vic or a year's worth of screen domination? Had they been introduced slowly and settled in naturally it would be a different story but they were foisted on the viewers and we had to like it or lump it. I'd rather watch the characters I'm used to - those who have earned their stripes by putting in years of dedication and legendary storylines. The Carters have yet to have a successful storyline that can stand alongside anything the Mitchells, Beales, Masoods or Brannings have done. Perhaps if they'd put in the groundwork over several years like those families they'd have more gravitas if and when the time comes for their "iconic" storyline. All they've done so far regurgitate classic storylines, balls up their own stories and come off as interlopers. The show is called EastEnders. Not The Carters. Back off already, Carters. |
