Hoping for a bit of advice on what i am doing wrong with my new TV and surround sound setup?

Just purchased a new samsung (UE55JU7000) along with surround sound system onkyo HT-S4505, am trying to set all this up with a sky+HD box, PS4 and a Blu ray player?

The thing that is confusing me is the TV itself has no HDMI ports on the back, instead it has a one connect mini box, this has 4 HDMI in ports, 2 usb and a digital audio out.

Has anyone got a simple to follow plan on how to connect this together? have only been trying for one day but thought i would turn to the helpful experts on DS to save me another frustrating day or days

Also very confused with this ARC feature? i would assume that the TV supports this?

Very simple.

Plug everything into the Onkyo, via HDMI if available on all devices as that simplifies things a bit.

Plug the Onkyo HDMI out to the TV HDMI port labelled ARC, which may or may not be the rightmost port on the connector unit, the pi$$ poor E-Manual available for this telly is not exactly the peak of clarity on this.

Then all you need do is leave the telly on whatever HDMI the Onkyo is connected to and use the Onkyo to select whatever source you want to view.

If you use the built in tuner on the TV then the audio from that will be carried back down the HDMI cable to the Onkyo, that is what ARC means - Audio Return Channel. The Onkyo manual will show you how to set it all up.

Chris is the man, follow the above because that's exactly how I'd have set it up.

Sounds like you've got some good kit, bet it was frustrating having it all in your lounge ready to go but not be able to set it up correctly! Hopefully you'll be well on your way after reading the comments.

Let us know how you get on

Hi Chris, many thanks for the advice, sorry for the delay in replying but have been busy at work and waiting for longer speaker cable,

All done now, and it sounds so simple, thanks for explaining everything, it all seems ok, not really had a chance to fiddle around with everything and play with all the features, will have to check online for the best picture settings, i did notice the TV goes on standby while everything else is still playing? i guess this can be changed in the TV settings somewhere, stiill not sure what ARC is or if i have it set up, but the onkyo is plugged into the HDMI in port on the TV labelled ARC?

Anyway thanks for taking the time to explain everything in simple terms, saved me a lot of time

ARC is Audio Return Channel. Does pretty much what it says on the tin. HDMI is usually unidirectional, ie audio and video flows from the source device (Blu-Ray player for example) to the destination device (TV say).

ARC provides a return path from the destination device back to the source carrying just audio from the destination device back to the source device. So if the destination device is a TV and the source device is an AV amp like your Onkyo with one cable you can send pictures from the Onkyo to the TV and the Onkyo can get audio back from the TV. Saves having to run a separate cable for audio out of the TV if you want to use the AV amp when watching Freeview via the TV's tuner.

ARC is enabled by default most likely so should just work out of the box.

As for the standby issue. Some TVs have an inactivity timer (my LG does) which basically shuts off the telly if you don't operate the remote for a preset period (often several hours). If you are watching Sky and using the Sky remote to do all the channel changing and the Onkyo to alter the noise level then chances are you are not touching the telly remote. So first off I would dive into the menus and see if there is some sort of auto shut off timer and disable it.
