Denise (EE) - viewers knew she was alive but they had a funeral for her onscreen
Kim Tate (ED) - possibly the first time somebody came back from the dead on a British soap? |

Frank Butcher and Nick Cotton don't really count. It was decided they wouldn't really be dead from the start. So those two are not like Dirty Den or Kathy Beale who were killed off by the writers at the time.

Most of them had enough ambiguity written into their deaths that their return was always possible. The writers did it like that on purpose because they didn't really want the actors to leave but once they had, they couldn't see a way to keep characters connected with them (eg Madge in Neighbours) in unless they 'died'.
I think the only ones where the writers really intended them to be dead for good at the time of writing are Bobby Ewing, Kathy Mitchell and Warren Fox. Even Kim Tate, they got in touch with the actress asking her to please come back the day that they filmed Kim's funeral! |

The death scene was drastically cut at the last minute on the orders of BBC One Controller Jonathan Powell, who wanted to leave the door open for Den's return. This decision enraged series creators Julia Smith and Tony Holland. Neither of whom ever worked on EE again. |

Didn't Mark Brennan die in Witness Protection when the actor first left? Then when he came back it was all a ruse to catch the bad guys?

Corrie brought in a character who wasn't even born - Adam Barlow.

Dirty Den's first death was written and shot as final. There was unused footage of Den lying dead in the water. (Shot at a water tank because the actual canal water was too dirty.)
The death scene was drastically cut at the last minute on the orders of BBC One Controller Jonathan Powell, who wanted to leave the door open for Den's return. This decision enraged series creators Julia Smith and Tony Holland. Neither of whom ever worked on EE again. What i mean with Den's death and also Harolds was that there was room to believe they weren't dead right from the start from what appeared on screen and that was deliberate on the part of the programme makers, even if against the wishes of the chief writer and main producer of the time. |

It would be interesting to look back at those episodes to see how the abortion storyline played out at the time. As I recall, there was no doubt that Susan went through with the abortion.

Vera Duckworth, Bobby in Home and Away, Madge in Neighbours all returned as ghosts.

What about Peter Baker in Home and Away? He 'died' onscreen and it was later revealed through flashbacks to have been faked.
The most ridiculous one was definitely Warren Fox in Hollyoaks. At least Den Watts death had a bit of ambiguity what with them draining the canal and not finding a body until 12 months later which even then was unidentifiable. And with Kathy Beale her death was off-screen so always had to potential to have been faked. However with Warren we actually saw him die onscreen so the decision to bring him back ruined whatever credibility Hollyoaks had left. |
