Ian, Jane, Cindy, Patrick, Vincent, Pam, Les, Ben, Jay, Sharon, Shabnam, Tamwar, Nancy, Lee, Cora, Masood, Carmel, Stacey, Shirley, Linda, Dot, Ronnie and the utter demon that is Bobby the killer Beale
Denise, Patrick, Billy, Jay,Pam and Fatboy. I know people think Fatboy is a pointless character but I think he works so well with the likes of Dot (and Carol when he was living there), he needs to lose the Fats and just be Arthur once in a while. He is just one of those nice people. I think Pam is also nice, she may be nosey but her hearts always in the right place. I think Denise and Patrick speak for themselves they would be a great loss if they left and they need to use them more, same with Jay away from Phil and Ben he is good I hope they rebuild the Billy/Jay relationships as well.

I was young at the time so didn't really have any opinion on great acting but I remember caring about her more than any of the present cast. Also none of today's characters have her gutsiness.
Most of them, really. Even my least favorite characters (Phil, Kim, Fatboy) have qualities I genuinely like. My favorite out of the bunch is probably Mick.
Good post and I agree with it. But I don't think it's going to get any better.
I don't watch EastEnders full time anymore. I read the spoilers and sometime watch it. The sensational plots can work, but it's the inexplicable character motivations that contradiction something they did the day before that got to me in the end. In real life people change, but EE jumped the shark a long time ago. The amount of 360's these characters do in 24 hours, you'd think the square would implode under it's own centrifugal force. It is extremely lazy writing, and mainly for this reason I do not watch it full time.
They seem to forget that people have to care about a character before they care about what happens. You help your audience care about a character by making them relate-able and/or nuanced. You show subtlety to go along with the overt – light and shadow. They attempt light and shadow sometimes but it just seems so clichéd and pantomime, crammed into the space of one episode and it backfires. Particularly when it's obvious what's going to happen and the light and shadow is just dithering and a poor attempt at suspense.
Interactions are important. Build up is important. Nuance is important. Seeing people do everyday stuff is important. EE has been on dramatic overload for so long I just got tired of it. I revisit sometimes but I can't say I care about any of the characters.

Summed it up in one, that's exactly how I feel.
For soooo long the UK soaps have been shouting for our attention. And I'm more interested in the show that's whispering. For me at the moment Neighbours is the best soap on TV by miles. It's totally character based and is relatable. And it's funny.
Mick Carter and to a lesser extent the rest of his family, don't really care about them when Mick's not involved.
Vincent.
Dean, Shirly and Buster to a lesser extent.
Phil, Jay and Ben, Ronnie and Roxy.
Don't mind Max and Stacy.
These are the only characters I pay attention to, if any of the other cast are on screen I pretty much switch off unless it's a scene involving someone listed above.
