So I watched Emmerdale's big episode tonight and I have to say it was great to watch. I always love to see a soap bringing storylines to a head, by having a big explosion that affects the entire cast.

Emmerdale's helicoptor stunt was pretty impressive. Kudos to whoever it was who thought up a piece of debris flying into the air and hitting the approaching helicoptor. It was all done really well. Below on the ground, the drama was being stoked up and about to come to a rolling boil, with Emmerdale employing the "Sharongate" method of revealing an affair of one brother having it off with the other brother's missus.

Having said that, I did get very nostalgic about another famous soap helicoptor crash storyline, done back in 2002. Indeed, Brookside, the soap that's done nearly, if not everything first, had it's own helicoptor crash onto the Parade, during a siege that was taking place on Brookside Close.

The pace of the drama in Brookside was a lot more frenetic, leading up to the actual crash itself. Before we got to the crash, we had scenes of terror, violence, fatal casualties and rape as the residents faced a terrifying ordeal. It was gripping. The helicopter being shot down was probably as unlikely as the actual storyline itself, but I thought it was done brilliantly, particularly as Brookside probably hadn't got the budget and the techonlogical advances that Emmerdale had tonight.

I personally think, although Brookside's was amazing, Emmerdale's will probably surpass it in terms of aftermath and spectacular scenery.

So who do you think did it best?

Brooksides actual stunt was the best by far! An amazing stunt. Peoples comments criticising people who are saying the CGI was awful by saying its the best they could do on a soap budget... Brookside did it 13 years ago and was much better, and Brookside is a soap :/

I agree, I just watched the Brookside one again and it is done very well. The scenes are put together beautifully with the lead up to the crash impact, the look of terror on people's faces, then the explosion sending glass and people flying.

I'll come back to this thread tomorrow when I've actually seen it all. It might be worth remembering that we've only seen a small part of this stunt so far.

It's sad to think Brookside got axed around the same time they screened the siege/Helicopter crash. It was quite an exceptional set of episodes. totally OTT but done well

I'm not gonna say copied...but more inspired by EastEnders's "Sharongate" by having Debbie and Ross's affair revealed over the sound system at the wedding reception. Much like Sharon and Phil's affair was revealed to a packed Queen Vic in 1994, when Grant played the tape of Sharon and Michelle talking it.

If we're comparing them, I'd say Brookside did the stunt itself slightly more realistically and impressively than Emmerdale did.

But if we're talking about the build-up, drama still to come, excellent performances and emotional aftermath then I think Emmerdale will probably win the day.

I'd say the Brookside one was better in terms of stunt because the Emmerdale one was quite quick whereas the Brookside one went on a bit longer. The Brookside crash was also fiery with multiple explosions but I'm sure Emmerdale will have some lined up for us in tonight's episode.

Overall, Brooksides was better, but Emmerdales one is presumably more about the aftermath. I remember Brookie saying they used a real helicopter via a crane & could only do it in one take.
