EE has identified a very small number of incidents where Power Bars have overheated, all of which relate to batch E1-06 (written as Model:E1-06 on the side of the device), and could pose a fire safety risk.

We're therefore recalling batch E1-06 and request that customers stop using them and return their device to a local EE store at their earliest convenience.

Power Bars from any other batch aren't affected by this recal

I had to take my first one back when the promotion first started due to it overheating to a point where it hurt to touch it. The guy behind the desk wasn't very happy about having to swap it either

Not good news at all, look at her hand
Seems as many as 250000 could be out in the wild.
I've got E1-02 a few days after the scheme started, at a guess the E1-06 will be one of the newest batch since the big restock.

I have one of the affected ones so now I have to go out of my way to take it back to them, and then go out of my way to get another one when they decide to give out replacements!

This, together with their crap coverage (why do I struggle to get mobile data when I'm in London?) is making me consider another provider to be honest.

ETA: Yes, I got this E1-06 one when they ran the second promotion.

ETA2: I just read the BBC News story on this, apparently "As a gesture of goodwill it will be offering affected customers a £20 voucher to spend on accessories".

However, it seems that EE are trying to keep it quiet as there's no mention of it on their recall page: http://ee.co.uk/power-bar-recall!

I thought that as well, but apparently they didn't know what to do with a faulty one!

I can see them recalling more of them. I've got a E1-04 model and it gets seriously hot when charging a phone (almost too hot to touch). Recharging the Powerbar isn't a problem as it only gets slightly warm. I was going to swap it (and let them know) last weekend but didn't have time. Hopefully they'll sort the problem as in the few weeks I've had mine it has been very useful.

I've got an E1-01 model from when it first launched, it's been fine. Gets hot when charging but not to any extreme. I imagine as they are giving hundreds of thousands away for free, they sourced them as cheap as possible, and this is the result.

Excellent, the one I have that I've never used is 01 so shouldn't explode if I ever decide to use it

EE have now replied to my tweet confirming that they will offer a £20 voucher that can be spent on accessories at ee.co.uk, for any customers affected by the recall when they return the power bar to a shop.

I wonder how many might wait until replacements are available.

I don't really understand why.

They're saying that it's only the original batch that have the problem, so why don't they give everyone a replacement from the newer batches?

I'm glad I have an 03. There's nothing I'd want to buy from that limited choice of accessories anyway. They should at least allow the £20 to be used as phone credit. I'd imagine the girl with the burnt hand has a nice little out of court settlement offer on its way.

not a lot to choose from I would have preferred credit on my phone but at least it is something they did not have to offer anything

The problem with swapping is the wait in the shop. A swap s just a minutes job but if the customers ahead of you are doing new phone contracts its a bloody long wait. I just walked out after 10 min wait.

Yeah I had that once when I walked in for a sim swap and they said it'd be a 30 minute wait. Errr no thanks
