Carla's gambling wasn't a magical overnight addiction. It happened over a period of weeks after the fire.

She stood in for someone having a friendly poker match in the Rover's backroom, organised another match for a bit of fun at Roy's then suddenly she was absolutely addicted to internet gambling games, slot machines, casino's
. It's laughable, she won a bit of money in a game with some mates once and suddenly she's a gambling addict?! I won every property on Monopoly once, I didn't suddenly become a raging gambling addict with the uncontrollable urge to flutter away money anywhere I could from doing so.

True, and she has started to talk to people about why she's gambling.
I love Carla but I wasn't looking forward to the storyline. However, I think Alison King is superb and to be fair, I'd say the writers are doing well with the story now.
