Decision whether to keep cat after been bitten by it.

Late last Tuesday night I was bitten (well more attacked) by my less than a year old cat. He's as of yet not been neutered.

Left the bites left on my leg and arm thinking they'd heal naturally as long as kept clean etc....big mistake.

Got admitted to hospital Thursday and underwent surgery same day due to severe infection. IV antibiotics etc.
Finally released from hospital late afternoon Sunday with more antibiotics and painkillers.

Now scared to go near him? As he may do it again?

Going to get him neutered ASAP!!!

Will he calm down after that? Or is it too late?

I know it's a long shot but have you ever watched 'My cat from hell' A guy called Galaxy Jackson deals with problem cats. Perhaps you can try and catch some of those episodes and see if there is anything you can do.

well you haven't really given any details so we cant really give advice. How long have you had the cat, is he an only cat, indoor, outdoors, what kind of stimulation does he have? Standard moggy or pedigree?

What were you doing preceding being bitten most animals don't randomly bite as they operate fight or flight so he was either playing rough or wanted a behaviour to desist?

More detail is really needed of course if you don't want the cat you best rehome it.

Had him since a kitten.
Have three other cats.

Was simply trying to stop him getting at another one of my cats.

Well then not to sound rude, it's your own fault your cat was focused on something else and your behaviour would have startled him so you got a redirect of what was going to happen between your cats. That's why people break up animal fights generally with a hose a loud bang or some form of distraction.

Has his behaviour changed, what's he normally like?

It might be worth taking him to the vets to get checked out, any animal can lash out if they're not feeling well.

First get him neutered asap. Thats likely to reduce his agression, both toward other cats and to you.
He will pick up on your fear though, so you will need to be confident around him. Try tiring him out with play - but use toys that keep you at a distance eg feathers on a string type ones. Try to key this into a natural cycle - play, food and then sleep.
Another problem could be territory - with four cats can they all find space to call their own? Can they escape each other - cat trees and shelving units they can climb and jump on are really good as it maximises escape routes, gives cats a nice vantage point and extends the amount of area they can occupy.

Sounds like redirected anger and not his fault, you need to develop a way to stop fights with out touching or getting between the cats. As someone else suggested loud bang or something.

When we had 5 cats I have to say we never had any fights it makes me wonder if yours are entirely happy being in a multiple cat household, would one or more be happier as only cats ?

Definitely get him neutered as soon as possible. I remember my two male cats were quite rough and feisty before they were neutered. Also, trying to come between two cats when one of them wants to play fight or just beat up is not a good idea. You could just get a small squirting water bottle and use that on him if he's being too aggressive. Don't use your hands/legs to get inbetween them otherwise you'll just end up getting scratched and biten like heck.

I too recently stumbled on "My cat from hell" on Animal Planet - so I tend to watch several episodes a week at the moment!

In truth though the problems do tend to have just a few causes - mainly territory issues and lack of interactive play. Of course its generally the people who need to change!

yes, I remember watching it a thinking its most the humans that need to change their ways, the cat is just reacting (badly) to the situation its been put in - once the humans put Jacksons advice into action, the problems were ultimately resolved
