I was thinking that last night as she strolled down the street with Gail muttering on about Tim being "inefficient with the toothpaste", that's something the old Sally would never have said.
It was funny when she wanted Rosie to go to the posh school but there was still a realness to the character back then, a down to earth quality. It's like they saw the praise and decided they wouldn't write Sally any other way. The recent comedy award hasn't helped either as now every line's a gag while Tim has been turned into a buffoon to compliment her.
In effect she's as one dimensional as what Gail is and Deirdre was now, only she's not as stupid as either of those two characters. It reminds me a bit of Annie Walker but no one could better the way Doris Speed played it.
I think it's good that Sally is the butt of people's jokes, but ever since they decided she would be this way full-time much of the dialogue doesn't ring true. I wish they would knock the comedy/snobbishness off sometimes and show her as a rounded person. I think the last time that happened is when she had cancer.
