Yet there was some mileage in the format of Op Knocks and 9 years after it finished, the BBC revived it with a less controversial host in the form of Bob Monkhouse. 16 million tuned into the first series and by the time of the final series in 1990, it was still attracting 12 million.
Also Kenny Everett proved to be the shot in the arm ITV needed, as its comedy was seen as poorer than the BBC's and less attractive to younger viewers. Everett's Monday night shows on Thames soon pulled in 14 million viewes, but being shown opposite TOTP for his 4th series saw ratings slump and he moved to the BBC. Ev's move to the BBC proved to be a huge success, as his first two series attracted up to 16 million viewers at times and he was a regular fixture on BBC1 until 1988.”
It's hard for some people to realise how groundbreaking The Kenny Everett Video Show was. The way they shot musical acts on the show made a few people in the music industry take notice. There's a story about David Bowie wanting the show's producer to do the Ashes To Ashes video after watching the show. Kenny Everett was a gamble that paid off for Thames. He brought the anarchy of his radio show to TV, and when the comedy increased from series 2 it really did become something special. David Croft said that one of the reasons Comeback Mrs Noah never got an audience from day 1 was because it had to face The Kenny Everett Video Show.
His BBC show was much more polished with Everett playing to a studio audience rather than the crew, like he did on ITV. I thought the ITV shows were better but his first 3 series were very good, plus it brought us Cupid Stunt. When you think of Kenny now you will want to say "all in the best possible taste" too. A character created because Thames threatened to sue over characters Kennycreated for the Thames show, like Sid Snot, being uses on the BBC.
TV needs more mainstream sketch shows.
