Not a surprise diagnosis: returning #DocMartin won the slot from 9pm on ITV (Total) with excellent 5.9m/27.8% http://www.overnights.tv

Previous Doc Martin series openers
2004 - 9.40m (42.5%)
2005 - 8.30m (35.3%)
2007 - 7.45m (31.5%)
2009 - 7.67m (30.4%)
2011 - 8.43m/8.73m (32.4%/34.1%)
2013 - 7.60m/7.96m (32.6%/34.7%)

Down, a lot, but not a surprise.

And there we go. Well done ITV. Your attitude for this year has worked wonders and now its coming back to bite you on the arse. Corrie's weak, the whole schedule is weak so not many even saw the trailers.

This DM lowest rating ever I believe. Really, really disappointing.

It may be down quite a lot, but looking at a 5.9m as an individual rating amongst all the horrific ITV figures, it looks like the GBBO!

This will inevitably be the last series then. I'm really angry about this

I think the categories are fine. Spreads the wealth.

Jeremy Kyle has won that category for several years now. He's popular.

The ITV ones?

Young people, Housewives. TV Choice is a very popular magazine. Most popular listings mag.

Wouldn't have minded seeing Emmerdale or EastEnders win. Coronation Street didn't deserve it.

Oh I didn't realize that it was viewers choice - I guess the name of the awards should have given me a bit of a hint there haha.

It will of course probably time shift like mad. The trouble with only coming back every 2 years means a programme is subject to the vagaries of the shifting TV Audience.

I don't think it will be the last series as they have little else that can get those figures.

I'm sure in one series the strictly results show was a hour long.

Hopefully today can be a more peaceful ratings thread!

I think it's a good variety of winners this year.

I doubt it I'm waiting on the Strictly v X Factor discussion and whether Emmerdale and EastEnders will clash again...

I don't think Doc Martin losing 2 million is just down to ITV having a poor Summer. Clearly the show itself has declined. It seems to be in a similar position to New Tricks.

That will be Corrie Live versus Bake Off then. And Doctor Foster has two weeks to establish itself before Unforgotten arrives.

Still a fairly decent rating though for a returning drama. It could time shift a fair bit as they seem to these days.

I've never seen the show but it does seem popular. I just don't like Martin Clunes - which I blame Doctor Who for.

You didn't like Snakedance did you?

Doc Martin is facing factual. It will be fine.

Its not really a surprise as you say but it does beg the question as to why so many ITV big shows are down. DA last year took a hit and now DM together with the rest we know about. Have ITV damaged their reputation so much or is it just people moving on from aging shows to the newer latest hits?

EastEnders is rating inline with what it does in Summer anyway.
The clashes have not seen EastEnders been reduced to all time lows and it held up against a huge week of Emmerdale (It couldn't manage that in 2006)

EastEnders and Emmerdale seem to have more crossover in viewers than EastEnders and Corrie going by past clashes and ITV like to protect Corrie as much as they can so a clash of both Corrie and EastEnders are not likely.

The BBC should air a Thursday EastEnders at 7:00pm for an hour and have both soaps air without a lead in or any leg ups from events or Corrie.

A massive Autumn from EastEnders should see the show turn back around and so far the trailer has had a great response. BTW BBC promoting Kathy's actual return to the SQ this Friday @ 8”

Has the trailer been on bbc tv ? I dint watch much live TV or turn off/over in credits
