22:04-22:47 - ITV News at Ten
22:48-24:27 - FILM: Skyfall (2012)

Long break after the first part of the film will probably have meant many turned over for the BBC One news. It's bad enough splitting the film, but that looks like poor planning compounding the error. Maybe there was a natural break in the film at that point, but it didn't have to start two minutes late.

I doubt Skyfall did all that well at 21:00 as HIGNFY grew slightly week-on-week, and Piers only managed 2.35m (11.9%) last Friday (exc +1).

It's obvious ITV really want to dump their evening news to 11pm permanently.

No- I think they'd like to still be News at Ten.

It's just that they would prefer it if the BBC closed the News Channel, and moved their main evening BBC1 bulletin to Two O'Clock the following morning.

They don't. They want it at Ten so they don't have to spend extra money on new programming. Therefore, they just move it when they need to.

But as the vast majority of viewers obviously prefer the BBC News at Ten shouldn't ITV move to 11 ? And shouldn't GMB be closed as the vast majority of viewers (3-1) prefer BBC Breakfast ?

Lewis isn't doing great there but it is doing OK and at least winning the slot. The first episode timeshifted very well too. It actually was 0.01m ahead of New Tricks for episode 1 in the consolidated numbers (the overnight was 0.5m behind). River would probably be doing half a million or so better than it is without Lewis there.”

Broadcast magazine has New Tricks 20k ahead on that night including +1, but it was certainly close.

Consolidated ratings on 6/10/15

New Tricks (ep 10): 5.66m (22.3%)
* pure timeshift of +1.12m (gain of +24.5%)

Lewis (ep 1): 5.64m (22.0%) inc +1
* pure timeshift of +1.65m (gain of +41%) inc +1

Dr Who News (who had 5.67m for Lewis) may have made a mistake or Broadcast could have.

I'd forgotten that Taggart did so poorly in that slot against Silent Witness.

Just about to post this.

So obviously no Sherlock for Christmas Day or Boxing Day.

We suspected New Year's Day didn't we? Deep down we sort of knew it.

For years ITV have seen News At Ten as an irritating public service broadcasting commitment. When they moved it back after being on at 11pm, they spent a fortune and obviously thought they would win viewers back. They didn't. The BBC presentation style is more appealing to the majority.

The Christmas schedules are very predictable these days, unfortunately.

The thought of mixing things up even a little would not occur to the BBC. They'd rather stick to what they know works.

GMB should be closed out of the respect for decent broadcasting.

Yes. The only thing that might have altered thinking was that its this one-off Victorian version but it just fits on NYD.

Can't remember if we got a share for Bake Off's consolidated 15.055m. Anyway, Broadcast mag has it: 55.78%.

It is shown at 11 pm when there are Champions League highlights, which probably diminishes it even more as the highlights show gets little more than a million, but even its normal slot is no match for the Ten on BBC One. People just don't equate the once highly regarded ITN as being a credible news broadcaster these days, the BBC and Sky are seen as so much better.

Not surprised to see Sherlock confirmed for NYD. I had thought maybe Boxing Day with it looking like quite a festive show, but it does work well on NYD.

Fair enough. Either way it closed the gap completely from the overnights and up against New Tricks it seems a decent performance.

Sherlock probably will be the highest rated drama on tv for 2016 and it fits in with the bluray release date noted earlier in the thread

So we could be looking at for NYD

8pm Eastenders
830pm Sherlock
10pm Mrs Brown

The last new regular thing BBC1 introduced to Christmas Day was Call The Midwife. Mrs Brown's Boys and Miranda helped mix it up a bit. But otherwise it'll be another year of Midwife, Doctor Who, Strictly and EastEnders.

With ITV we get two hours of soaps and two hours of Downton. That makes them very rigid. The depressing thing is with that line up ITV knows they'll get decent ratings.

It is decent. I still haven't been able to find a bona fide tape-checked overnight for Lewis on that day, have you?

I'd love to see the demos for Bake Off and Doctor Foster for that night.

ITV have very little drama that rates well and can be used for a Christmas special, it will be interesting to see how they plan for life without Downton

Broadcast mag has a few demos, but they're series averages.

Across the series, Bake Off averaged 12.5m (47%) consolidated (and rounded), of which 7.5m were ABC Adults (57% share, 60% skew) and 3.1m were 16-34s (56% share, 25% skew).

Doctor Foster averaged 8.2m (31%) across its five-part run. Of that, women made up 5.3m (37% share, 64% skew), men 2.7m (25% share, 33% skew), and ABC1 Adults 4.8m (37% share, 59% skew).

If the same skews applied to the final episodes of each show as the series average, they would have got:

Bake Off
- around 3.8m 16-34s
- around 9.0m ABC1 Adults

Doctor Foster
- around 6.0m ABC1 Adults
- around 6.5m / 3.3m women / men

I highly doubt Sky are seen as much better as ITV News.
