The chances of a new 6 hour entertainment show on ITV getting over 4m+ is slim as it is (based on the last few years only a couple of new shows have done it), let alone trying to replace 45 hours of 7m+ averages! I agree however that they should start reducing the number of hours for TXF in the next contract, perhaps from 45 to 30 hours. Also I think perhaps they need to start moving TXF slightly into less prominent slots, to give other new shows a chance to launch off the back of it: i.e. having TXF at 7-8.30pm on a Saturday, then new show launching at 8.30pm with TXF lead-in away from SCD.. instead of the current situation of TXF being at 8-10pm and the other show being virtually sacrificed and DOA at 7pm against SCD.

As for the next couple of weeks, I agree with you too that it will be quite testing. A 10:20pm finish is very late, and we have seen time and time again from the breakdowns that the audience starts to drop off from 9.15pm onwards. Ironically I think TXF would do just as well 7.30-10pm (with a 40min SCD clash) as 8-10.30pm (with a smaller clash) because it finishes earlier and gives more time for same-day timeshifted viewing. I think on Sundays the 7-9pm XF shows haven't taken a hit even though up against 45mins of SCD due to same-day timeshifting from9pm onwards helping to boost the overnights for XF and reduce the SCD clash impacts on its figures.”

Yes I think that sort of scheduling would be beneficial to ITV in the long run. TXF would take a bit of a hit against SCD but it would still hold up OK I think and then there's a nice cushy slot for a new show. Parotcularly come November when they'd have IAC at 9.30pm as well. Celebrity Chase does a decent job against Strictly but they could really do with trying some new entertainment shows in decent slots. And good shows too, not cheap game shows or knock offs of previous shows. I do think XF will be renewed though.

I think you're probably right about what has happened on Sundays. Comparing the last Sunday 2hr show (which got 7.8m) against the first (which got 7.3m) - it was still up in the 7pm hour. Last Sunday the 7pm hour (against SCD) averaged 7.0m whilst 5 weeks ago the first 2hr Sunday show (without SCD) got 6.7m in the 7pm hour, so it was actually up. The 8pm hour was up more of course, last Sunday got 8.6m there compared to 7.8m 5 weeks ago, so SCD was still denting it a bit, but I do think it was helped by same day timeshift.

I think tonight could well be below 7m due to quite a lot of factors working against it. The Saturday judges houses show last year only got 7.3m and that was much shorter and viewers were used to it being on Saturdays. Tomorrow will probably be a bit down on last Sunday too as I think having the head start on Strictly may have helped (and I'm not sure how J&H will do leading into it - I hope well but I suspect not sadly).

I don't really understand what happened to the ratings between Tuesday and Thursday.

Do people on the panel say, "I've watched EastEnders on Monday and Tuesday, so that means I mustn't watch again until next Monday!"?

Apparently Sherlock will be screened in cinemas in Nov. Will have it any impact on ratings ahead of NYD?

In the Broadcast article for the day of the second episode it says that the first episode got 4m (19.1%) but that's only to 1.d.p.

I'm sure most of us could take at least one 10x60 series on this topic. It would be awesome if done well and there's so much material for a compilation show like that. Shows like "It Was Alright in the..." on Channel 4 are of the same ilk, only this would be specifically about ratings and TV successes and flops and battles.

We can but dream can't we?”

I'd like that. They could interview Ratings Thread regulars!

Me on Last of the Summer Wine.
Glenn on Opportunity Knocks.
C14E (remember him?) on Factor and Talent.
Roscoe on Xmas Day 2007.

No tickets go on sale then.

Sherlock: The Movie is finally happening. Well, not really, but it is heading to the big screen.

In exciting news from the Sherlock panel at MCM London Comic Con - the upcoming special was given the title of The Abominable Bride.

Actually, Skyfall did excellently:

With the sequel just about to hit cinemas, not too surprising. Amazing what that can do for film repeat ratings. Good post-news retention as well.

Solid rating for Skyfall at 9pm and excellent for the post news section. Possibly dented Graham Norton a bit. I wish they'd ran it in one go with the news afterwards though. For its third screening in 12 months that's a great performance.

Sounds good to me.

You're right about C14E, he's not been around for ages. Hope all is OK.

Must have been a very good number for the News in between.

I think it shows that the audiences for all the soaps are fickle and will pick and choose when they watch. We have seen similar falls for ED and look at the second CS eps on Monday/Friday.

So all that talk about Sherlock on Xmas Day was wrong as I am sure is the talk of Sound of Music on ITV.

Speaking of old posters, whatever happened to George S, Andy 23, Robbie Sykes and Charnham, who used to be regulars on here, but never seem to post now? I know Samuel was barred, but not the others who were quite busy on here.
However, anyone reckon DW could break the 5 million barrier tonight? Now the rugby won't be clashing with the show, and TXF is back, I reckon DW could perform better as it is a good alternative for the anti Cowell viewer. DW has suffered a bit of rotten luck this year, being up against three England rugby matches, and on one occasion in the crunch match against Australia fell to 3.7 million in overnights.

I think the loyal section of any soaps audience that will watch come what may makes up a much smaller proportion of the audience nowadays compared to a few decades ago and that section of the audience is likely to shrink further. It's affecting all soaps.

Yes possibly. Always a shame when posters disappear but if that is the case then he probably couldn't post on here any more.

Maybe people are gradually losing interest and have more things to watch these days. No one, had this thread been around 20 years ago, would have predicted Coronation St falling as low as 6 million on occasions, when anything less than 14 million was considered bad and had ratings fallen as low as 6 million in 1995, then the soap would have been cancelled. Remember, Emmerdale Farm almost got cancelled in 1993 when its ratings couldn't go above 7 million and the soap had to be reinvented to survive.

I'm not an anti Cowell viewer, I'd class myself as an anti Cheryl Cole viewer. But even so, that wouldn't make me want to sit through Dr Who and Strictly anyhow.

Norton was actually up from 3.04m (25.3%) to 3.30m (25.3%) - note the identical shares, a million more viewers around - but I guess it would have been even higher in the absence of Skyfall (instead of the usual post-news tat).

Agree about the splitting. I could forgive ITV delaying the news on this occasion, particularly on a Friday.

An overall weighted average of 2.51m (18.2%) for Skyfall, excluding +1, which I expect to add quite a few more (e.g. Gogglebox viewers).

I doubt Friday's matter that much in retaining an audience. They would be better off concentrating that the news started at ten, Sun-Thurs. At least then, they have something to build.
