The question which no one can answer though is if GOT was on BBC1 or ITV what would it rate? Would it appeal to either channels core audience? All fantasy drama has to be a biggish risk on UK terrestrial tv. But if you dont try you will never succeed so ITV should be praised for trying.

I think Game of Thrones success is helped by the fact its based a big book franchise that isn't finished yet, plus the nudity, sex and gory violence help too, I can't really see ITV doing that but that not to say the shows won't be good

GOT is great for pay channel ratings.

I'm glad they're giving them both a go though, with long runs too.”

It is therefore essential that they both are given a strong lead in. We know on ITV anything that follows a weaker show is automatically affected.

If not BGT, Beowulf should at least get Saturday Night Takeaway.

There is always that possibility that even if they are not massive hits, they my well sell well abroad, thus being profitable to ITV anyway.

BBC were partners with HBO on Game of thrones for the pilot and then left . Lmao

But seriously I cannot see Beowulf or Jekyll succeed. Everything I have read screams 1/2 season wonder

As someone who works at the Post Office and knows the postman who delivers Hermoine Norris's mail, she's not very pleased about this.

The weather wasn't great over parts of the country yesterday so I expected ratings to be a bit higher. It shows how well Bake Off is doing to get such big numbers. People are making a point to watch it. The explanation that "there was nothing else on" for a show's ratings only goes so far.

|t seemed to get dark pretty early last night, storm clouds but no rain. I was hoping for some lightning.

No live tv watched last night for us, just an episode of Elementary.

I agree with you with what you said about Bake Off. People tune in to watch it because they want to. It's an inclusion/water cooler moment tv programme. A lot of people want to be a part of the experience, in the same way that Strictly and TXF draw in the viewers. Event tv works wonders and will still do that in the future. The soaps are settling lower but still pull in the viewers during the week - the heights of 20 million will never been seen again for them.

I'm sure international sales are a major part of the decision to go ahead with both Jekyll & Hyde and Beowulf - but I don't think scheduling will seal the fate of either show domestically. We have no indication what either series is like tonally - both stories have aspects which are quite family audience un-friendly …*so using the likes of BGT as a lead-in may be inappropriate and futile.

yorkie100 is quite right about how fantasy drama plays on the mainstream channels: Doctor Who and Merlin aside, there have been no consistent successes in recent years. ITV's last foray into the genre was Eternal Law, which was a major flop. Apparently execs are all over The Living And The Dead, BBC One's next supernatural series - probably because of JS&MN being a dismal failure in a 9pm slot.

I'd also argue that ITV is doubly compounded by its drama hits being quite conservative and familiar - crime thrillers, period melodrama. There's nothing remotely like J&H or Beowulf, nor has there been in ages. So there's quite a big element of risk for them.

Am I dreaming, or was there talk at one point of at least one of those titles premiering on ITV Encore?

BIB - mightn't that have been kiboshed by Sky's all-encompassing deal with HBO?

Doubt it. HBO are still free to do co-productions with the likes of the BBC. Parade's End and The Casual Vacancy come to mind.

The BBC were onboard for Game Of Thrones long before the Sky deal then pulled out.
