I used to like Little and Large, but the ratings more or less halved between the penultimate series and the final series. It went over 12m in 1990, as far as I can remember, but the final series went under 7m, slightly later in the year than usual, in 1991.

Looks like the hot weather dented most things. Good for Casualty though. It is irritating that DS generally don't report +1. It probably put KIITF around 3m and The Cube around 2.5-2.6. OK-ish for KIITF (more so the share) but surely The Cube is running out of lives?

The BBC in 1978 were badly rattled by the loss of Morecambe and Wise. One little remembered duo they hired between Eric and Ernie and Little and Large was Lenny and Jerry( Bennett and Stevens). Their show, which wasn't that funny, ran for two series and attracted 11 million viewers before Lenny Bennett moved to ITV and Jerry Stevens faded into obscurity. The BBC did have more lucky with Little and Large as for all the humour was basic, it seemed to appeal to families and children.

I was 15 when the final Little and Large series went out, so it probably finished at the right time for me. Strangely, a few months after the final series ended, they aired some repeats (on Fridays at 7.40pm), which was quite rare for Little and Large. If they'd been shown at 7pm (which they couldn't be because of Wogan) they could have had some quite impressive viewing figures against Cannon and Ball's Plaza Patrol on ITV. The ITV sitcom certainly boosted Terry Wogan's ratings on Fridays.
Not a great start for Football League Tonight. Admittedly only about 200,000 down on what it was getting on the BBC, so the 9pm slot has helped to a degree but not enough. I think though with some tweaks it could find a more substantial audience and one they would be happy with.
To be expected with an episode heavy on analysis. After all, there wasn't much action to show. And with it being a Saturday the Sky audience was probably higher than it was during the week so many will have seen it live.
Also not sure they needed to bill it as England's Greatest Ashes Triumph on the EPG.

And that was why Little & Large were finally axed as their ratings tumbled for the last series. In the 70s and 80s they were getting some decent numbers. Numbers started falling from mid 80s I think and the 1989 series did okay from what I recall. But there were rumours the axe would fall in 1990. This was when Jonathan Powell was Controller of BBC1 and he had hardly any hits. So when the new series started in 1990 opposite Haggard on ITV and got 12m, that saved them...for a bit.

I know they're in the middle of a benefits "season", but what are the odds that this season never comes to an end, like the ubiquitous DFS sale?
Having said that, a few bright spots in the C5 calendar - Ben Fogle, Cricket and Lip Sync Battles, so fingers crossed the last of these does well and it further encourages them to broaden their output.

Not bad for KIITF. I dont suppose it will ever be a hit, but then, The Cube never actually rated EVER and that lasted nine series.

I'd agree with this, If I were 5 I would be seriously looking to broaden their output, as they haven't got rid of the hangover of the Desmond days yet of the trashy docs, yes they bring the figures in but at the cost to the reputation of the channel- I'd definitely be looking to launch an entertainment show to bolster the LE dept (Lip Sync battle is a good commission here) and I do think Rising Star could do well for them now the heat surrounding itv dropping it has died down (you'd pick up the format dirt cheap too) Then more homegrown drama to sit alongside the big imports and the comedy they've been promising but haven't made it to screen yet and you're looking at a nice resurgence for 5- Four seem to have got their act together after probably 2 years in the doldrums so no reason 5 can't try and follow suit

The Cube is dead - as we've known for the last few years, but ITV still seem to keep pushing on with it. It got a better slot than KITITF and yet is rating less.

If the only things that were rating for the channel were benefits related it'd be a worry. The truth is they aren't at all reliant on the ratings fix these docs provide, but at the same time they are enjoying a particularly strong end to the summer and I'd be lying if I said the Britain on Benefits season wasn't one of the main reasons it has been as strong as it has.
I still think Nightmare Neighbour Next Door's 1.6m opposite Bake Off is the 2nd best performance of the week on any channel after Bake Off itself. It had absolutely no right to do as well as that opposite BBC One's biggest weekday hit in decades, they ought to be struggling big time there not clearing the slot average by half a million.
This current benefits craze will die out and be replaced by something else. A couple of years ago it was hoarders that BBC One and C4 in particular were obsessed with, every other documentary they put out for a while seemed to be related, before the viewers moved on. This is no different to that, except a little more damaging from a reputation point-of-view given they are all immediately dismissed as Poverty Porn - even Can't Pay?, which is not that at all.
As long as C5 can keep finding broad appeal factual hits like Nightmare Neighbour Next Door and New Lives in the Wild- both into their fourth series now and in better form than ever, they will be OK. The factual department is doing really well in general and it's now entertainment and scripted where they need to step up. If they do that, it really will be game on with BBC Two and C4 in the race to be third.

I'd forgotten all about Haggard until this week. I never watched a whole episode, but I saw some clips and it looked pretty bad!

Thought it was funny in places but not great. Eric Chappell trying to recapture some of the Duty Free magic with Keith Barron but it wasn't as good and never caught on.

Bill Cotton was devastated by the loss of M&W - he went to the BBC governors who agreed to match the Thames pay offer but it was too late because the contract had been signed. Little and Large were cruelly described by one critic as the only double act with two straight men.
Britain's Spending Secrets is being gifted The Great British Bake Off's lead in after Earth's Natural Wonders, going by the provisional schedules:
It's a two-parter which means a month of Bake Off lead ins would be given to documentaries. Whilst Earth's Natural Wonders is intriguing I can't help but think they should be trying to launch a drama in the slot. I know Our Zoo didn't pull in the figures they wanted but still, there's a 9m lead in going begging there.

Nature Nuts with Julian Clary might not be rating well, but it is certainly enjoyed by those few who do watch it. It does feel like BBC4 material though, something that would fit well on ITV3.

What a complete waste of a lead in. Very unappealing - and something else with benefits in.
