Exacty this. Danny Cohen has just told reporters at Edinburgh TV Fest that he cannot guarantee Strictly wont now clash with X Factor in the same way as ITV wont guarantee that Emmerdale wont clash with Eastenders.

EDIT: ITV have seen sense and moved it to 3pm. Makes so much more sense. Why mess with a strong schedule?

Such an odd time for SCD to start. Its not even like they can justify a 7.15pm start, other than to dent TXF.

In the long run though the BBC are the only ones who will loose out with this strategy,given John Whittingdales current scrutiny.

Why should they? This whole "oh the BBC can't chase ratings" is a load of rubbish by sole ITV supporters who want the BBC to not be able to defend itself, which is what it is doing. Both channels should be able to do what they think is best and let the public decide

ITV used to make a load of money and aggressively schedule against the BBC for years. Saturday night has been a battleground for years. That's one night where I think battles are allowed.

The audience rises on Saturday from 7pm. Strictly has generally rated better since the 6.30ish starts from 2011.

How petty. The BBC should know better. They are providing a service which we all pay for, and should be thinking of the viewers.

Equally, the BBC have given ITV a way out. If they stop the ED/EE clashes then the BBC will equally cooperate I'm sure.

Hold on a min, I thought Strictly viewers wern't also X Factor viewers, because the general things on here, is that Strictly is the OAP and happier show, while the XF is more younger skewing and more trashy/ vile, so why would it matter greatly if these two different shows clashed anyway?

Surely any clash, just shows up which show is more popular.

The BBC has nothing to apoligise for, neither has ITV.

What is the point of one-hour episodes when they drag the averages down?
What is the point of one-hour episodes when they are followed by programmes like Bargain Fever Britain, which are followed by programmes like School Swap, causing viewers to defect to other channels and allowing BBC1 to win the rest of the evening?

Now that ITV has lost the football, wouldn't it make sense to try to strengthen Tuesday from 8pm? Why haven't they tried double bills of Emmerdale on Tuesday, followed by the extra episodes of Coronation Street at 8.30pm? Why is ITV nervous of challenging Holby City? Is it (as I suspect) because ITV don't have total confidence that their soaps are able to attract people back at 8pm when BBC1 is showing Holby, which has occupied that slot (displaced temporarily in 2007 for Holby Blue) since October 2001?

Just like itv should know better by not putting Emmerdale against Eastenders which is almost a weekly acourance now

I don't think that's necessarily true in the case of the soaps as EastEnders is usually ahead of Emmerdale in non-clash weeks.

It's ridiculous but logic rarely applies to anything ITV does nowadays.

In an era where the soaps are becoming less and less popular, the broadcasters shouldn't be trying to speed up that decline especially ITV who rely on them far more than the BBC.

Thank you for those numbers. I guess those rose tinted glasses didn't really show how badly the programme was doing. These days those figures look great, and it did beat what the BBC was showing especially as it was the height of summer.

I didn't expect to be proven correct so quickly.

Shame they both can't grow up. Cohen must have been challenged about it; therefore I hope Fincham is also pushed in his interview regarding it.
