Does anybody know the last thing shown on TV to get 20m viewers?
You'd have to say The Olympic Closing Ceremony in 2012. Before that it was The Olympic Opening Ceremony in 2012!

If England's mens football team made it to a World Cup or Euro final that would be 20m guaranteed. So we won't see that then!

Well Jay Hunt and Peter Fincham know exactly how the BBC works as they have both run the show there.
And they said different things when they were there. The hypocrisy of it all!

I do wonder when, and if, we'll see another 20m figure.

Here's a list of the top ten biggest 'peaks' of the decade so far (feel free to correct them if they are wrong).

01 - 27.02m (81.9%) - Olympics 2012: Opening Ceremony (27/07/2012) - BBC 1/HD/3D
02 - 26.28m (79.2%) - Olympics 2012: Closing Ceremony (12/08/2012) - BBC 1/HD
03 - 23.16m (77.4%) - Euro 2012: England v Italy (24/06/2012) - BBC 1/HD
04 - 21.27m (73.3%) - World Cup 2010: England v Algeria (18/06/2010) - ITV 1/HD
05 - 20.29m (70.7%) - World Cup 2014: England v Uruguay (19/06/2014) - ITV/HD
06 - 20.10m (72.7%) - World Cup 2010: England v USA (12/06/2010) - ITV 1/HD
07 - 20.05m (66.8%) - Olympics 2012: Men's 100m Final (05/08/2012) - BBC 1/HD
08 - 19.44m (60.5%) - The X Factor Final (12/12/2010) - ITV 1/HD
09 - 19.38m (85.5%) - World Cup 2010: England v Germany (27/06/2010) - BBC 1/HD
10 - 19.29m (68.1%) - The Royal Wedding (29/04/2011) - BBC 1/HD

I don't want to be morbid but I think a funeral will reach that figure. But I'd rather talk about regular programming and it would have to be a football match with England in a semi-final or final.

The World Cup match between England and Uruguay last year peaked with 20m but in terms of average the Opening and Closing Ceremonies of the 2012 Olympics averaged around 22-23m (overnights).
I do wonder when, and if, we'll see another 20m figure.

So Channel 4 has joined ITV in the 'talking sense' category: http://www.theguardian.com/media/201...hannel-4s-hunt

Let's hope the BBC will listen. I've always much preferred C4 and ITV.
What do the BBC have to listen about? All the Sunday clashes are being caused by ITV scheduling across the SCD slot and there have always been inevitable clashes on Saturdays in the last few years as well.

I seem to recall Hunt scheduling Strictly from 7.00-9.15pm on Saturday nights.

To all the Strictly fans smug about ratings being higher than X Factor - just remember which show peaked with nearly 20m viewers - something Strictly won't ever do.

I'm no X Factor fan by the way.

Interesting in that one point put forward by some was that the other commercial networks wouldn't like the BBC to schedule based on ITV. Maybe not then?

Of course this could be Channel 4's way of maybe trying to get BBC to schedule around some of their big shows as well. Say, putting pressure on to ensure TFI Friday gets 'easy' competition for it's return. "Well you did it for ITV..."

What time-slot are we anticipating for the revival of TFI Friday? I can't really see it in it's original slot of 6pm because The Simpsons and Hollyoaks are there 5 days a week, every week of the year now. So I'm thinking 8pm or maybe even 9pm is more likely.

Gogglebox will be at 9pm until the series ends a few weeks before Christmas, maybe TFI will be at ten

I think 10pm would be way too late. If Gogglebox is on until nearly Xmas, I should we'll see TFI at 8pm.

Would channel 4 risk airing it at 8pm,before the watershed,a lots changed since the 90s.

I don't have Digiguide, but does anyone know how the provisional listings are made available to the public and how far in advance they are? 'I assumed they were top secret 'til Wed afteroons.

Indeed she did and she got burnt quite badly by it. Interesting to see C4 siding with ITV on the issue though.

14.5m, I think, for the 2010 final.

It's normally slightly more than two weeks, but that will change soon anyway as the listings come out slightly earlier on the run up to Christmas.

The highest audience ever recorded on British TV was the 1966 World Cup final with 30 million on BBC1 and 3 million on ITV.

The highest audience for a scripted programme was 28,835,000 for the Morecambe and Wise Christmas Show on December 25, 1977.

It should be pointed out that research methods were different from today.

C4 are sounding like one of those people in a meeting who waits for someone else to say something and then saying "yeah, what he said" - with a pointing finger.

However i do disagree with her on one of her points
"The Channel 4 boss said the BBC was a £1bn broadcaster and there were “no consequences” for them if a programme didn’t work. “For Peter [Fincham, ITV director of television] as a commercial channel there is a real consequence and it’s about being aware of that impact

If the BBC had an expensive programme which failed to grab the ratings, a lot of the anti BBC print media would be up in arms. Digital spy would go into meltdown and cats and dogs would start living together in harmony.

ITV are probably aware that TXF needed a good bit of free publicity, and this orchestration has created that. Also there could be a possibilty that things are not working with the new lineup. Combined with the Rugby, ITV should have given TXF a break this year and brought it back in 2016.

However in the real world, people will just Sky+, Tivo or Record Freeview and watch when they want to. After all it's not 1980 anymore

Doesn't everybody who wants to watch TXF just record it and start watching 25 minutes in to avoid the ads anyway? So far, far too much is made of all this clash nonsense.

And something X Factor won't do again it looks like. 2010 was a great year then they changed the panel and the wheels started to fall off in 2011.

Also it's usually X Factor fans that mention that 20m peak compared to Strictly. Isn't that right Jordy?

I wonder if Simon Cowell regrets leaving the X Factor Uk when it was so successful to launch X Factor USA which didnt do well
