One decent hour doesn't help the whole night if what follows doesn't work. ITV relied so much on soaps that if they moved the episodes to Sunday it would free up the week for BBC1. It is also ITV admitting defeat and meaning more talk of them relying on soaps.

It's not all doom and gloom with Doc Martin, Downton and I'm A Celebrity to come plus more drama next year.

Like BB, TXF has developed an online fan base who follow it like some people follow a football team. BB is a case in point, it's vastly down on its peak ten years ago, but has a hardened fanbase who spend a lot of time on the BB forum.
However, sometimes this can get worrying as when Channel 4 cancelled BB, some idiot sent death threats to the Channel 4 offices.
Actually Channel 4 don't seem to miss BB at all and their creative renewal which saw BB and other worn out shows like Shipwrecked and Supernanny cancelled has slowly worked. Hits like Benefit St, My Big Fat Gypsy Wedding( big as Eastenders on some weeks) and Gogglebox have seen the channel revive after some lean years after BB.

Both X Factor and BB have some scary hardcore fans. There are regular discussions on the BB forums about events that happened in series that took place 10 or more years ago.

However these people are not enough to make a show a big hit again.

I must say though that the XF figures are shocking. I thought it would probably stay pretty flat this year - instead it is still in the freefall it has been in since 2012.

There are a lit of people who do not watch TV live currently to avoid paying the LF, A thing the government has promised to correct. It maybe why viewing figures have fallen of.

Don't forget the RUWC and three England football qualifiers. Next summer ITV have the Euros to chivvy them up.

It will be a separate catch-up report, so we'll need to be doing some adding up I think.

Interesting to see if live online viewing is captured by the new set-up. In theory no because that's not catch-up, but we shall see.

Will be fascinating to see these figures - I am not sure what to expect.

A quick wiki check. Steptoe and Son was 5 in the first series (1962) and 7 thereafter. Til Death do us Part managed 7, 10+1, 7 and only after Series 7 was at 6.

The Liver Birds managed 12 in its second series, and 13 for 3 and 4 (when Carla Lane was sole writer).

Channel 4 is in a worse state than anyone knew if its 'creative renewal' was shock docs about gypsies and people on benefits and a show looking at people looking at rival channels' programmes..

X Factor 20 million viewers

A disappointing weekend for X Factor. I actually enjoyed the first two shows and didn't think they were that bad - I like the new judging panel, and Olly and Caroline work well together. But it appears people just aren't as interested anymore. I agree with Score, maybe they should look to reduce the number of hours the show does next year. In the context of ITV, it's still doing well - on the same level as the ITV soaps now, rather than being way out in front.

But it's not the phenomenon it once was and they need to be careful not to alienate the remaining viewers by overexposing it. So I think a reduced episode order next year is the way to go.

Celebrity Big Brother also not doing too well. I can't really see it picking up. If you've missed the launch and first few episodes, will you bother catching up? I think it will increase a bit tonight, but I think it'll be stuck in the low 1s for the remainder of the series which is disappointing for the celebrity version.

As far as I can tell, they're using the same 5,100 homes, who I expect have a TV licence.

They need to get a panel of non-payers, But I expect many of those watch live as well as on demand.

There was just the newspaper article where one of the cast mentioned the second series.

It might end up being like the Last of the Summer Wine situation, where the BBC Press Office didn't mention it for seven years.

That's great for Syco, does sod all for ITV if the ratings are down.

Oh yes, do you remember when Jade Goody had a sore throat one morning in 2003? To most people this would sound worrying as it is a show most people have moved on from and only the most hard core fans would want to know about someone who came last in series 2.

But again does show that the odds of Cowell/Syco ending the show of their own accord due to lower ratings are slim when it also has other benefits for them.

They'll make it for as long as ITV wants it. Only they know how long that is but I suspect this talk of Cowell pulling the plug if ratings drop below a certain level is nonsense.

As I've said already, rather than ending it completely looking at reducing the 45-50 hour order to 25-30 hours would be a less risky way of cutting X Factor's presence and launching some new stuff without ditching the show completely.

It's all well and good X Factor fans raving about the show, it's the other viewers it needs to appeal to. X Factor seems to be down to its core viewers who watch all the time.

That's Downton Abbey which is airing it's last series and Doc Martin which saw quite a series-on-series decline (though not to X Factor proportions). In all honesty I think the only show they can be happy with at the moment this year is Britain's Got Talent... and maybe satisfied with Broadchurch, Emmerdale, You're Back in the Room and Ninja Warrior UK.
