I'm not saying A&D are a magic wand but combined with the original format and history of XF, it wouldn't be the worst combination by a long stretch. But if they did it XF might get off their butt and actually do a proper revamp rather than rethreading and hoping for the best. Even the production values, a key element of XF of old, are crap these days.

5.9m (inc +1: 6.5m) for last nights XF is a complete and total disaster. They must be some serious panic at ITV HQ today with those overnight ratings.
Question is what can they do. Nothing I suspect is the answer. No amount of re-editing can stop this decline. If I was ITV, I'd be shifting next Saturdays show to avoid the Strictly clash as that could result in some seriously low figures in the clash period.
I expected the show to be down y-o-y - but not to this degree. The show had kinda stabilised over the last few years (2012-2014). It now has gone into terminal decline.

Well this is the thing, after a period of severe decline the 2013 and even 2014 seasons were fairly stable and it looked like they'd steadied the ship. Not so clearly as this weekend has been 20% down on last year's opening weekend across both nights. It is a disaster. I don't think anyone expected it to be this low. I think you're right that people are just fed up of the format and the extended middle stages are going to be brutal. I don't think there's much they can do other than ride it out and make the best show they possibly can without resorting to desperate tactics. But the rot is there and the show is on its last legs. They've tried all sorts over the last few years but they're in this position now and there isn't much they can do. I actually thought the shows were good this weekend but frankly I don't think it makes much difference.
What is ironic is that most of this year's changes have been a deliberate attempt to go young, yet the most 'successful' series of the past 5 years (since Cowell/Cheryl left) was the one where they went a bit more old fashioned and brought back Sharon Osbourne. I don't personally think that was a particularly outstanding year for the show but the ratings were steady so maybe they should have learnt more from that year?

How was 2013 the most "successful" series? It's ratings were worse than 2011 and 2012 and it's talent was awful.

Because it was the most steady series in the ratings. 2011 and 2012 both posted significant year on year declines whereas 2013 was pretty much flat vs 2012 (it averaged 8.8m vs 9.0m in 2012). 2014 posted a slightly larger decline.
I don't think the talent was great that year either but the ratings held up which is what I was talking about.

All I can think is that the XF revamp has alienated a lot of the older audience. It does feel very young now with Rita/Grimmy and Olly/Caroline. And I agree, this weekends episodes were very good - better than last year I would say.
The stupid Twitter vote for which category the groups mentor is a serious error of judgement IMO. Why not just use the app like they did last year with the voting system.
I think next weeks clash with Strictly is going to hurt the Saturday show quite significantly. If I was ITV, I'd move that immediately. Also we don't know how much the Bank Holiday Weekend has affected things yet until we see next weeks numbers (although the SCD clash will hinder this theory) and the officials.
I think the best they can hope for is that BARB have seriously F**ked up and a new set of overnights is issued tomorrow.

It's strange that you should say this as, bar the final audition yesterday, the judges did come second. That was arguably part of the problem - we saw very little of Rita or Nick's personality or the chemistry on the panel.

Understand... but this is the problem, over the last few years the XF has become about the judges, focusing on Cheryl crying, Simon Crying, not the latent. The viewers have got fed up with this. Some may not haven't given the XF the chance this year.
Simon seems to focus on Cheryl, in fact tabloids today have her on the front page re her weight loss and the low figures. Rita helped the Voice, why not focus more on her, if you bring in Nick, you will upset older viewers who listen to R2. So if you use him, then 'use him' to attract newer viewers.
I can see SC asking Nick to plug XF favorably on R1 this week.

Maybe the reason 2013 held up in comparison to 2012 is because the judges could take a back seat - everyone knew Gary, Nicole, Sharon and Louis so they didn't have to go through big introductions and 'show them off' so they could focus on the talent more, compared to 2012 (with Nicole) and 2011 (with Gary, Tulisa and Kelly). Saying that the 2011 auditions rated brilliantly; it was at the TOWIE edit Boot Camp where the wheels started to fall off.
It's understandable why shows try and attract viewers back to them but something they have to consider that slow, manageable declines are the best they're going to get... and not increase the decline in a desperate bid to acquire more viewers.

I couldn't disagree more. What's so great about this series? I'm not feeling it at all, quite frankly. Only half watched last night. After three great series in the row, they were due a dud but nobody could have predicted a misfire of this magnitude. UK v USA was a theme seemingly cooked up so they could excuse filling the house with a load of "controversial" US personalities that are not at all known, relevant or watchable. Surprise surprise, nobody cares, and the UK signings are the worst ever for any reality show in the past 2-3 years, most of them likely to add absolutely nothing.
It will be low to mid 1's throughout now. We've seen before that this show simply cannot recover from starts this bad, whether that be celeb or normal. And it is undeniable that the ratings so far have been devastatingly poor from C5's perspective. For it to be struggling to pull much more than 1m on a Sunday when as recently as Jan it was pulling its best ever C5 numbers with 3m+ for some highlights shows is absolutely abysmal. And inexcusably, the share of the audience it got was about the same as the 40 year old film repeat on before and cheap as chips clip show on after.
It's toast. Just accept it. A turnaround at this point is only possible if you believe in miracles...

Here is a thought why not try something original instead of reviving old past it shows?
Surely there is someone in the country who could write a half decent sitcom or create a new entertainment format. The channels need a new approach and could start by sacking there own in house producers who have spectacularly failed for many years to produce any programme in these genres worth wasting electricity broadcasting.

SCD could actually gets bums on settees next week. Mind you I'm not convinced SCD will fire on all cylinders as the presenting team are just not good enough. The celebrities are not mega on paper but expect they are an OK in terms of dance entertainment. Will they get folks to switch on?

Last year's second Saturday show bounced back by 700k including +1 compared to the Sunday rating; if it does the same this year it will be back above 7m... just. But the Saturday show wasn't against Strictly last year.

Oh the line up is good, SCD will do well, on par with the recorded launch show of 2014.
Again like XF I do not think the presenting team is a factor, Bruce to Tess even Zoe has shown that.
