Little Fockers.

Heard dubious things about this, but I liked it.

Continuation of: Last Movie You Watched? (Part 6)

The Paper Chase (1974) - 7/10 or 8/10

Timothy Bottoms as a first-year student at Harvard Law School where he's in awe of Kingsfield, his notoriously aloof professor.

I love Bottoms. Sensitive, quirky and thoughtful. Always a pleasure to watch. This said, I almost fell off my chair when I heard a familiar voice from one actor, who appears as Ford the rich kid. Here is him (in bow and light-coloured suit) as Ford from The Paper Chase. And here is him as Dick Stensland from L. A. Confidential some 20 years later.

There are familiar faces in The Paper Chase as well: Lindsay Wagner (Bionic Woman!), Edward Herrmann (probably best known as Max from The Lost Boys) and James Naughton (probably best known as Stockard Channing's ex-husband in The First Wives Club).

But yes, the film was generally enjoyable. It had its moments. Some funny, some poignant and some thought-provoking. Whimsical at times.

Gone Girl 3/10

I was expecting great things. Instead I got the film that would never end.

Several times I thought that was it and I had endured it all but it kept on going.

Never have I seen a film where the swearing was so jarring and never have I seen a film where if every character died, I couldn't give a toss.
Woww is that the same film I watched?

I found it to be a riveting psychological thriller that had you going right through it, not really quite believing which character was actually the evil, until quite close to the end. I only saw it for the first time last week, and I loved it.
Just goes to show how people can see things differently, I suppose.

Eraser - 1996 Arnie action film. I'd only seen it once before, and that was at the cinema. Daft but enjoyable. Will definitely re-watch it again.

Run All Night - Another Liam Neeson action movie though there's actually some heft here, thanks in part to Ed Harris' characters.

7/10

Insidious: Chapter 2 - Good scares for the first hour but it becomes unecessarily convoluted as it tries to tie up to the first movie.

6/10

You're not alone. I've heard nothing but praise from friends.

I'll give it another go some time as I'm obviously watching it wrong

Big Jim McLain (1952) 8/10 (!!)

John Wayne as an agent of the House of Unamerican Activities rooting out communists in Hawaii.

Filmed at the height of the McCarthy era and reflective of John Wayne 's politics, the film is upfront, unabashed Mc Carthy propaganda , to unintentionally comical effect. So we have a segment where a former communist party member works in a leprosy clinic in Molokai (Hawaii) to 'atone for my former beliefs', a segment where a father mourns his son 'lost to the communist cause after a business trip to Moscow', voice-over narratives summoning the spirit of Daniel Webster (an influential politician in the early 1800s) and asking 'this nation shall stand united and resolved against unnatural forces' etc

I was fully expecting to dislike it, and to my continuing surprise I thought it was great !!

John Wayne glides through the film smiling and relaxed, the politics and communist intrigue almost taking a backseat, as if he felt the message to be so obviously right as not needing any earnest acting.

Hawaii is filmed beautifully in black and white, and pictures of the old town have a near-documentary feel, and for those of you who have visited, the USS Arizona in Pearl Harbour is visited as it was before the current white monument, and the city sights are shown unspoilt.

Most unexpected filmic experience this year so far 😊

Essie Davis & Noah Wiseman were fantastic.

The film was just OK.

Pickup on South Street (1953) 7/10

Richard Widmark as a pickpocket who steals a film wanted by Communist agents.

Superb acting and photography but i feel the film is let down by the ending.
I took this as a recommendation and watched, very enjoyable. i really liked the ending as i couldn't guess what was going to happen. Photography was uneven for me or the editing was, didn't spoil the film though. 7/10.

Interesting, I really liked it, but I was expecting it to be awful, I guess expectations are always a deciding factor in these things, I'd give it an 8/10, made me laugh.

*Odd segue alert*

Was not a sequel to Train, which I just finished watching, above average slasher pic 6/10, but more importantly where the heck has Thora Birch gone?

Rock and Roll High School.
I can honestly say it is the worst film I may have ever seen in my life!
Even though it features The Ramones, nothing can save this turd of a production!

The Bling Ring. 6\10. Cleverly done. Sofie,Coppola is an accomplished film maker. But the characters' motives were very unclear, and somtimes the dialogue was inaudible .....

Lady From Shanghai (1947) Does for Hitchcock what Birdman does for Superhero films, kept thinking it would have made a great Carry-On Film, Babs Windsor as the Lady From Shanghai, Kenneth Williams as her husband,Sid James as the detective and Jim Dale ( with an Irish accent ) playing the Orson Welles role, all done as the late great Kenny Everett would say, in the best possible taste. As a Carry-On 10/10 otherwise, i laughed a bit 6/10.

Detour (1945) 8/10

A bar pianist hitchhikes his way to Los Angeles to reunite with his fiancee, and makes fateful encounters.

Fantastic film noir enhanced by its low budget. The male lead (Tom Neal) had a rather eventful life!

That's a co-incidence. It's on at 11.25 on Channel 4 tonight.

Seen it before, decent comedy. Melissa McCarthy is hilarious!
