Hondo [1953]. Director: John Farrow

7/10

Enjoyable John Wayne western not too badly marred by having been shot in 3D or the casting of a white Australian actor as the Apache chief.

*******
Rachel and the Stranger [1948]. Director: Norman Foster

7/10

Pioneer western with William Holden's grieving widower taking on a new wife (Loretta Young) as a servant until competition from Robert Mitchum makes him realise he does actually love her.

*******
Rancho Notorious [1952]. Director: Fritz Lang

7/10

Low budget, mostly studio set western that plays more like a film noir with Marlene Dietrich running the notorious ranch where criminals hide out.

watched The Towering Inferno (1974) last night was quite a long film I give it a 5 out of 10.

D-Wars (Dragon Wars) - Trailer LINK

This movie is a mess. A MESS! Although there are a couple of fairly cool moments, nothing here makes any sense. It just goes from one scene to the next - with little (if any) explanation as to what, how or why. And the 2 lead actors were appalling. Adam Sandler would have fared better as the lead actor & actress. THAT'S how BAD they were!

Shooter (2007) - Yet another daft conspiracy action film. The usual predictable stuff. It barely kept my attention, and I certainly wouldn't sit through it again. 5/10
Skyfall

The Girl on the Train (2016) enjoyed watching the movie.

Child's Play - Naff cult horror film. When I was about 10 people would talk about these Chucky movies at school. A bit creepy when I think about it now. Though now I know where the idea for Slappy from Goosebumps came from

4/10

Dr Strangelove - My least favourite Kubrick film. Peter Sellers gives three interesting performances and there's mild slapstick humor. For the most part I wasn't engaged. Though I take on board the fact that this would've been darkly humorous to audiences of the Cold War era where the air of nuclear destruction loomed large over everyone.

Blood Work [2002]. Director: Clint Eastwood

6/10

Eastwood stars as a rather ancient FBI man chasing after a serial killer. The film title gives away the main plot device.

London River 8/10

Just watched this on TV tonight, gentle film about two parents - one from Guernsey and one from Africa - who come to London to look for their offspring in the aftermath of the 7/7 bombings. Brenda Blethyn is a mother seeking her daughter - a wonderful performance - and Sotigui Kouyate a father seeking his son. They come together with a common goal on finding that their kids were a couple.

It's a gentle, sensitive film and I found it very moving.

Ashby [2015]. Director: Tony McNamara

6/10

Kid given a school assignment to get to know an older person discovers that the guy next door (played by a rough-looking Mickey Rourke) is an ex-CIA assassin with a few scores to settle before he dies.

*******
Stayying Alive [1983]. Director: Sylvester Stallone

4/10

Feeble sequel to Saturday Night Fever. Director Sly gets his brother to write and sing lots of crap songs for the soundtrack.

*******
Fury [2014]. Director: David Ayer

5/10

Gallant Brad Pitt as a tank commander in the last months of WW2, taking on almost the entire German Army whose aim is conveniently poor. Even a grenade dropped on top of Brad doesn't harm his pretty face.

*******
Split Second [1992]. Director: Tony Maylam

Rutger Hauer as a cop in the future London of 2008 where due to pollution "day has become almost endless night". Despite which Hauer wears designer sunglasses throughout. Unoriginal SF movie shot on location with bits ripped off from Blade Runner (of course), Predator and Alien.

*******
Dragnet [1987]. Director: Tom Mankiewicz

5/10

Not funny enough to be a spoof and not affectionate enough to be a homage.

The Train

Burt Lancaster at his best in excellent WW2 drama, crisply shot by John Frankenheimer. 8/10

Session 9

Terse, creepy horror slightly marred by narrative issues and a denouement that steps back rather than push further forward. Shame, as when it's good it's very good. 7/10

The Girl on the Train

See thread.

I quite enjoyed this film, but then I quite like Nat Wolff's quirkiness. I think he's a good actor.

One of those films I try and catch whenever it's on, such a good fun film - and a great score.

Amazon Prime Video

A great suspense movie with Christopher Plummer. I'd never heard of this film and like a lot of the movies on Amazon Prime it was an unexpected treat.

Dead Man's Shoes - 2004
A British film/collaboration between Shane Meadows and Paddy Considine. Admittedly the film passed me by 14 years ago but fortunately I stumbled on it today. A gritty, revenge film with Toby Krebbell in his first film as Paddy's younger brother who was bullied by drug dealers in a Derbyshire town. Probably a bit grim for some but had this been directed by Tarantino then it would have been more prominent in the film media outlets.

A solid 9/10

Nowhere Boy - 2009 - Director Sam Taylor-Wood - Starring Aaron Johnson

Film about John Lennon's adolescence, his relationships with his guardian aunt and his mother, and the creation of his first band, the Quarrymen.

Seen this before but after a recent trip to Liverpool, watched it again. Really enjoyed it.

MASH [1970]. Director: Robert Altman

7/10

Amusing warzone antics that launched the long-running TV series and boosted the careers of Donald Sutherland, Elliot Gould and Robert Duvall. Formerly blacklisted writer Ring Lardner Jr. won an Oscar under his own name (he had allegedly scripted a winner for which someone else picked up the award).

*******
Retribution [2014]. Director: Kat Candler

6/10

The original US tile "Hellion" is more appropriate. Delinquent teen leads his kid brother astray.

*******
Snowball Express [1972]. Director: Norman Tokar

5/10

The usual Disney family comedy with Dean Jones inheriting a rundown hotel.

*******
Liberal Arts [2012]. Director: Josh Radnor

7/10

30 something guy returns to his old college and has a relationship with a teenage student. Radnor also wrote and directed and had the good sense to cast the excellent Elizabeth Olsen as his co-star. Filmed at his old college too.
