I, Daniel Blake.

Have to admit to slightly dampened eyes by the end. Its a hard and depressing watch but shining through is that Blake is a good man-not least because of his heartwarming and thoroughly decent relationship with Katie and her children.

Audience stunned to total silence as the credits rolled.

No Good Deed [2014]. Director: Bob Rafelson

6/10

Samuel L. Jackson as a cop held hostage by a criminal gang.

*******
Baby Love [1968] . Director: Alastair Reid

7/10

Teenage girl orphaned when her mum commits suicide moves to swinging London to stay with her mum's ex-lover (and her possible father), then seduces everyone in sight. The BBFC managed to pass this after cuts despite title star Linda Hayden being only 15.

*******
Flight For Freedom [1943]. Director: Lothar Mendes

6/10

Fictionalised biopic of solo flier Amelia Earhart (re-named at her widower's insistence), given the war propaganda treatment. Earhart is still in the news this week:

*******
One Of Our Aircraft Is Missing [1942]. Directors: Michael Powell & Emeric Pressburger

7/10

Downed British aircrew make their way back to Blighty with help from the Dutch resistance. More wartime propaganda. The bombing raid itself if wonderfully shot.

Paranormal Activity: The Ghost Dimension 6/10.

Typical PA affair, but it gets an extra mark for being one of the better instalments.

Dr Strange - loved it.

Must be seen in 3D (preferably IMAX) to fully appreciate the mind blowing special effects.

The Night Visitor - 1971

One of my favourite cult films.

If you haven't seen it you can watch it or download it here.

Sporadically amusing comedy.

*******
Penguins of Madagascar [2014]. Directors: Eric Darnell & Simon J. Smith

3/10

Feeble animated fantasy.

*******
Men, Women & Children [2014]. Director: Jason Reitman

9/10

Drama about family life in the internet age barely puts a foot wrong.

*******
Let's Be Cops [2014] Director: Luke Greenfield

Mascots - 6/10. Lost its way towards the end
Angus thongs and perfect snogging - 3/10. Great script. Irritating and unlikeable main character.

Paddington - the new one with the CGI bear. 8/10. Really enjoyed it. A really well made family film - there's stuff in there for kids and adults alike. Great cast : Nicole Kidman, Sally Hawkins, Hugh Bonneville, Ben Whishaw, Julie Waters. Great set pieces - reminded me of "Wallace and Grommit" a bit. Feels very British as well.

Aliens [Theatrical Cut] -8.5/10- This film never gets old, although I prefer the Director Cut. Got to experience this on the big screen with a live orchestra and if that wasn't enough, Weaver, Cameron & Henn walked out onto the stage, great way to cap off the 30th anniversary!

Spotlight - 6/10
Great story but was disappointed due to the hype, the acclaim and the fact it won best picture at the oscars. I found the reporter characters very one dimensional and the acting average at best. The script was really it's saving grace. It needed more oomf.

Where Eagles Dare - It's an old favourite of mine.

ALso tried a Russell Crowe film called 'No Way Back', but gave up on it part way through. It's crap.

The Brood [1979]. Director: David Cronenberg

7/10

Early Cronenberg horror has some neat touches plus Oliver Reed playing a sinister psychologist.

*******
Dracula [1931]. Director: Tod Browning

7/10

Unfortunately based on the stage adaptation and it shows. Browning was clearly not comfortable with the switch to talking pictures (this film was released silent with intertitles in some territories). Lugosi's wonderful, stilted Hungarian accent is a bonus, as are the fabulous castle sets and Dwight Frye gives a great madman performance as Renfield

*******
Drácula (Spanish language version)[1931]. Director: George Melford

6/10

Shot on the same sets after the Browning version had wrapped for the night. Lupita Tovar (who at 106 is still with us) makes a spirited Eva (the Mina role renamed) but Carlos Villar in the title role spoils the show with his goofy performance.

The Purge - Started off well but got a bit meh towards the end.

The Purge Anarchy - The novelty of the plot of being able to do what you want for 12 hours wears incredibly thin by the second movie. I won't bother with the third movie. The franchise of a whole really is style over substance.
