Tom Thumb (1958); Jack The Giant Killer(1962); Seventh Voyage of Sinbad (1958): a bit of a nostalgia trip as it's about 40 years since I watched these on telly as a young child. Awesome special effects in the latter two, in which the monsters, done by stop-motion photography, look more real than today's CGI creations. Jack The Giant Killer was apparently quite scary for young children when first released. I can believe it, as the scene where the tiny dancing mannequin grows to a huge size in the sleeping princess's bedroom at night is still frightening now.

Does anyone remember This Is My Song from Tom Thumb, being featured regularly on Steve Wright In The Afternoon in the 80s as a bit of a laugh?

The Uninvited (1944)

Splendid old haunted house mystery so assured in what it's doing it even dares to show us the ghost - and what an eerie thing it is too. An absolute gem. 9/10

Speed Racer

Cartoon-based fantasy. The Wachowskis might be onto something with the whizzy, near- trippy visuals, but sadly its narrative gears rarely shift above second. Quite overlong too, but fans of expensive curios (or those who just want to see $100m+ go up in smoke) may find something in it. 5.5/10

Sex Pistols - The Great Rock and Roll Swindle.

I've lost count of how many times I've seen this film, but I have a friend who when we get together for a few beers, this is our "go to" movie. To this day it remains a classic.

9/10

Once (2006) A bit clumsy at times but really enjoyed this film; especially the soundtrack. I knew who Glen Hansard was but never heard of Marketa Irglova. She's got a great voice and now I can't stop listening to the soundtrack. 8/10.

Cars [2006]. Directors:John Lasseter & Joe Ranft

7/10

Engaging Pixar animation. Co-director Ranft was sadly killed in a car crash before its release (he wasn't the driver).

*******
Gone Girl [2014]. Director: David Fincher

5/10

High production values lavished on a trashy novel adaptation.

*******
Calendar Girls [2003]. Director: Nigel Cole

7/10

A very British comedy with various middle-aged actresses flashing a bit of flesh.

*******
J. Edgar [2011]. Director: Clint Eastwood

6/10

Flashback biopic with DiCaprio mumbling through an unconvincing prosthetic makeup.

Yoga Hosers 10/10

Nah, still the worst movie of all time but rates the high score just because anything that bad has a true cult value

Decision at Sundown [1957]. Director: Budd Boetticher

6/10

Randolph Scott rides into town to avenge his wife's death.

*******
The Terror [1938]. Director: Richard Bird

5/10

Edgar Wallace adaptation with a more interesting cast than plot (including Bernard "M" Lee as the romantic lead and the always fun Alastair Sim as one of the crooks).

The Girl Who Couldn't Quite (1950) - a b&w morning film on Talking Pictures TV starring at Bill Owen (Compo), as a tramp who embarks upon a sado-masochistic relationship with a girl from a well-to-do family. At least that's how it seems to be shaping up after he gave her a good spanking which she seemed to enjoy. I've left it recording to watch later.

I've just looked it up in IMDB and found the following review. Can't wait.

"Bill Owen plays a tramp who makes a mentally ill girl smile. She comes to depend upon him rather than her family. The girl looses her memory and Bill becomes a fixture in the home. However she regains her memory and does my recognise him.The family decide that it would be for the best if he were to leave. At first he is resistant but then realises it is for the best. The film is based on a play by Leo Marks, once of the secret service, who would later go on to make glamour and nudist films. The film is unusual in that it deals with mental issues. However whilst sensitively done nevertheless it is deadly dull.It is extremely wordy and betrays its stage origins.Well meaning but a bore."

I've just finished watching it. Bill Owen seemed a slightly odd choice for the tramp role, which in an American version would probably have been taken by Cary Grant. It was the girl who kept me interested though, expertly played with an air of detachment, barely disguising a bubbling cauldron of erotic sensuality – or perhaps that was just my imagination working overtime.

It was just slightly cheesy at times but I'm glad I watched it. I'm sure it will be on again sooner or later.

Sinister - A waste of my time. I won't bother with the sequel
Pet Sematary - I was never keen on the book and the movie did little to change my opinion either.

Rudolph the Red Nose Reindeer (1964).

A beautiful stop-motion animation which is , it turns out, an anerican christmas institution.

Utterly charming, and a classic i'd never seen.

(inspired some very good skits on mad TV- especially A Box of Gifts Now)

*******
The Birds [1963]. Director: Alfred Hitchcock

7/10

Some neat Hitchcock touches on the way to an enigmatic ending.

Fantastic Beasts and Where To Find Them - Muddled film but not without its moments.
Need to give it a re-watch though.

6/10

Manglehorn - One of Al Pacino's latest 'character pieces' which just means he's playing himself. Excruciatingly dull.

2/10

The Revenant 7.5/10

I didn't think I was going to like this. A few people have told me that it's boring but I thought it was far from it.
The camera work is amazing and extremely clever. Will definitely be watching it again.
