'Snowpiercer' (2013) 7/10
A man-made environmental disaster has killed everyone on Earth apart from the passengers of a giant train. The train is divided into a strict social order with the tail section living in slave - like conditions, and passengers living in increasing splendour the further up the train. A Spartacus-style revolt by the lower orders ensues to get as far up the train as possible, possibly up to the leader of it all, the reclusive Wilford. Violent, reasonably entertaining futuristic thriller with increasingly strong political and ecological overtones. A little over - long. |

The Kids Are All Right - 6/10
Julianne Moore plays one half of a lesbian couple, who have raised two kids (Mia Wasikowska and Josh Hutcherson) thanks to the donated sperm of Mark Ruffalo. The kids track down Ruffalo and we see him get to know his kids and the effect it has on their unusual family. |

No Escape. It was entertaining. The action starts pretty much straight away and stays mainly consistent throughout the film. The acting it good too. 7.5/10.

Horns - 6/10 Quirky but for all it's oddness it ends up feeling strangely pedestrian. too long. Some good moments though, and good performances. Daniel Radcliffe does well playing an American, in fact all the lead cast do as most are actually British!

above average game-to-movie adaption, wasn't expecting much but was pleasantly surprised at it, some nice cinematography as well |

Cloverfield
I really can't stand 'found footage' films anymore but some of the earlier ones at least had a bit of originality and novelty. This is one of the better ones, and although I'd have preferred it if it had been shot in the traditional way... 7/10 |

Far From The Madding Crowd (2015). Has big footsteps to follow in the 1967 adaptation captures the spirit of Hardy's novel and has the beautiful cinematography accompaniment. Carey Mulligan is no Julie Christie and Hardy's Bethsheeba makes all men who meet her fall in love with her. I think my beef is i know the novel and she was not good looking enough for the role. If you haven't read the novel or watched the 1967 film you could well enjoy this but it wasn't for me. 4/10.

The Limey
Terence Stamp miscast as a cockney hardman just released from prison who heads to L.A. to track down his daughter's killers. The role would have better suited someone like Ray Winstone imo. The script is abysmal and Peter Fonda was hopeless as Stamp's American nemesis. It was an unneventful way to pass 90 minutes but nothing special and doesn't warrant repeat viewings. 4/10 |

The Death & Life of Charlie St Cloud - 5/10
I wanted to see this for a long time and I was disappointed when I finally managed to do so. It's more of a romantic film than someone trying to find enthusiasm for life again. |

My Neighbours the Yamahdas - 7/10
I really liked this, short films but amusing, And I enjoyed how a lot of the funny family moments could happen in other countries too so it felt easily accessible. |

Rust & Bone (2012) - 5/10
IMDB fawns over this but to me, it's a mediocre tale of when two tossers collide. It features Matthias Schoenaerts who's in the new "Far From The Madding Crowd" film. |

Wadjda - Follows a vibrant, rebellious Saudi girl who one day dreams of owning a bike. So much is going on in the background behind Wadjda's personal quest to get this bike in terms of politics and religion but it never feels like the film is lecuring you.
8/10 Grown Ups 2 - More obnoxious than the first Grown Ups which followed a reunion of old high school friends. But I wasn't bored watching this like I was with the first movie/ 5/10 The Human Centipede III (Final Sequence) - The conclusion that cements this trilogy amongst the all time greats like The Godfather and The Lord of the Rings trilogies... NOT! I remember being traumatised by the first movie but with the sequels they show the director (who makes a cameo here) he does have a sense of humour. This 3rd movie is a full blown parody and heck, there's even a 'commentary' about the US prison system. I have no interest in re-watching any of these movies though and I'm glad I've got through them just so I can say I saw these wretched works ![]() 5/10 Brave - Set in the Scottish Highlands about a princess who rebels against her mothers wishes to be married off. Not Pixar's best film but still very enjoyable. 7/10 The Croods - Fun DreamWorks animation about a family in prehistoric caveman times where the dad fears anything that is 'new' which clashes with his daughters curiosity. 7/10 Waltz With Bashir - Surreal and hypnotic animated documentary by Ari Folman who was enlisted by the IDF during the 1982 Lebannon war but years later struggles to remember what happened, specifically concerning a massacre of Palestinian civilians by Christian militia. Almost forgot it was a documentary because the animation was so cinematic and so surreal. Very powerful. 9/10 |

Blood In Blood Out. (93)
An excellent film, I first saw around 15 years ago, watched it again last night. Based on 2 brothers and a cousin. One becomes a cop, the other a gang banger and the third an artist. The story mainly revolves around prison gangs and the rise of the cousin up the ranks of the latino gang. The obvious encounter between the gang banger and the cop. I found out later this was based on the true life experiences of poet Jimmy Santiago Baca. 9/10 highly recommended. |

I finally gave the second Hobbit film a go. I was bored by the first film when I saw it at the cinema, and wasn't going to bother with the other two. I only got part way through the second one before giving up on it. It's mostly over the top rubbish imo. Just ridiculous.
Still like the book, though. It was one of the first books I read outside of school, and still find it a good read decades later. |
