Vertigo 6/10
Never has been a great film to me, but I was up late last night (it finished at around 5am!) and thought I'd give it another viewing. It still did nothing for me, although you can't beat a bit of Jimmy Stewart. Never liked Kim Novak, although my Dad had a 'thing' for her

I'm not keen on Vertigo either. There are quite a few Hitchcock films that I don't like, though.
Clash of the Titans (1981) - Blu-ray version. Enjoyable film. Not a great Blu-ray. 7.5/10 |

I've just been at her the original Scrooge- the black and white version - it's by far and away the best version. Alistair Sim is genius in this role. 10/10
Now I have Nativity 3 to look forward too.... god help me |

Deadpool
Probably not the best movie to watch when the in-laws were round, but an enjoyable 90 minutes nonetheless (and it's great superhero movies are moving away from the child/family friendly affairs they're more accustomed of being) 7/10 |

American Heist [2014]. Director: Sarik Andreasyan
4/10 Adrien Brody and Hayden Christensen as unlikely brothers who get involved in a bank heist. ******* Four Fast Guns [1960]. Director: William J. Hole Jr. 6/10 Western with James Craig hired as a town tamer and one of the 3 gunslingers hired to sort him out turning out to be his kid brother. ******* Kiss Kiss Bang Bang [2005]. Director: Shane Black 5/10 Despite some fun verbal exchanges from Robert Downey Jr. and Val Kilmer this action thriller with twists never amounts to the sum of its parts. |

There was nothing on TV that I wanted to watch this Christmas, so I watched a couple of DVDs instead. The films I watched were
Bad Santa (2003) Bad Teacher (2011) As you can see, there is a "bad" theme going on here, lol. I have to say, though, that I didn't enjoy either of these films. Bad Santa, in particular, was supposed to be hilarious, but I just found it very crass and unfunny. I have heard that there is a new sequel out, so God help us all. I thought that it was a very mean-spirited film, but then I guess that was the whole point of it. There was also far too much swearing, which continued throughout the whole film and this ruined it for me too. I give it a score of 1/10, because it was simply awful. Bad Teacher was also crap and I didn't even laugh once. I enjoyed the car-wash scene, though, but for different reasons, lol. The only saving grace to this film was Cameron Diaz and I would have turned it off if it hadn't been for her. She was the only thing that saved this film and made it a bit more bearable. I thought that it was without doubt the most unfunniest "comedy" that I have seen for years. Apparently, The Sun newspaper thinks that it is "hilarious". You can deduce from that what you will. I give it 2/10 and that is only because of Cameron Diaz. She provides some very welcome eye candy to keep male viewers' attention. Other than that, it was crap. |

Today, I watched Legend (2015), which is the new film about the Krays and stars Tom Hardy as both of them. I had heard and read so many good things about this film and I also really liked the 1990 film The Krays with the Kemp brothers, so I was really looking forward to watching this.
Sadly, however, the film was a massive disappointment in so many ways. It was well-acted by Hardy and Emily Browning, who played Reggie's wife Frances, but the film was lacking in every other department. There was virtually no plot and it was nothing at all like John Pearson's famous book, from which the film is supposed to be based on. It just seemed to lurch from one scene straight to another, without any obvious link or reason. The film was also woefully inaccurate in the actual portrayal of the Krays themselves and their activities. It seemed to focus more on Reggie's marriage and love life with Frances than anything else. I also didn't like the way that Ronnie was portrayed, which made him out to be a rather comical figure, rather than a menacing and psychotic gangster. There was also nothing in the film about their elder brother Charlie, their father and very little about their mother Violet. The 1990 film, although still flawed, did address these issues in a better way and did feature the criminal side of the twins a lot more too. The Kemp brothers version also took the story much more seriously and didn't portray the Krays as overly comical figures, unlike this film. So, to sum up, the acting from Hardy and Browning in particular is excellent, but they couldn't save this film. It felt more like I was watching a comedy than a gritty gangster film. Also, although the film runs at over 2 hours, it felt much longer than that. Although the film was well-made and looked good, that is about all I can say about it. I give it 6/10, for the acting and production values. I think that I will stick to the 1990 version in the future, though. |

Muriel's Wedding 7/10
Quite an enjoyable rom-com. The Inbetweeners Movie 7/10 Crude, tasteless and offensive. And funny. The sequel is a waste of time, however. |

recent remake of Jungle Book. 5/10.
I love the original Disney one. This one was CGI at its most annoying. Only slightly redeemed by Christopher Walken's King Louie. |

The Bad News Bears [1976]. Director: Michael Ritchie
6/10 Walter Matthau in excellent form in a familiar tale of a coach taking on a losing kids baseball team and taking them to the local finals. ******* Big Eyes [2014]. Director: Tim Burton 7/10 True story of artist Margaret Keane, whose husband tried to take credit for her work, given a shiny, quirky Tim Burton treatment. |

Midnight Special 7/10
I really enjoyed this indie supernatural film, even though it seemed to have bits of plot stolen from various other stories, it felt original. It also left so much hanging, with very little explanation of anything given, yet it still entertains and makes you feel good. The acting was great and it's put a smile on my face because, although the ending could be seen as sad from one perspective, it made me feel happy from several others. The special effects at the end were terrific I thought. |

Pleasantville 8/10
I really fancied watching this again as I love everything about it from the cast to the original idea, the effects to the social commentary, the humour to the drama. Geeky Tobey Maguire and his twin, Reese Witherspoon who is popular and self-absorbed, are transported into a 1950's black-and-white sitcom called Pleasantville, where their arrival leads to inevitable change. Also stars the wonderful Jeff Daniels, William H Macy, Joan Allen and J T Walsh in his final performance. This film makes you laugh, think and even manages to be a feel good film. |

Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows Part 1 - Still my favourite of the series. It's the first time where they got the balance right between being faithful to the source material and making a genuinely great and at times artistic film. People complain it's slow but for me the quiet, intimate scenes made the film. Splitting the novel into 2 films allowed the characters to fully breathe for once.
9/10 Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows Part 2 - Voldemort's house of cards crumbles, making him all the more dangerous as the trio hunt his Horcruxes. After the introspective nature of Part 1, this is a emotional and enjoyable ride to the finish. 9/10 |
