The Neon Demon last night. One of my faves of the year. Not for everyone though, without a doubt.

And this evening, Jurassic Park 3, with my son.
I think JP3 holds up pretty well, especially the effects and cinematography. I think it's easily the best looking JP film.

Just before Christmas I received a voucher worth £13.99 from Sky to purchase a film of my choice, I was able to get two that came to £13.98 and one of the ones I ordered came today, The Martian. I just finished watching it and thought it was really good, has anyone else seen it and if so, what did you think?

AI: Artificial Intelligence - Ending the year with one of my favourite films, the irony being that it's a film I can only watch once every 3 or 4 years because it's such an emotionally devastating film on so many levels for me. I always thought the reason why for so long it wasn't considered a classic is because it alienated the fans of the two minds behind the film, Kubrick and Spielberg. Two very different sensibilities but for me AI combined the two beautifully. I think the film will stand the test of time.

I've been re-watching the Harry Potter series on ITV but missed Deathly Hallows pt 1 last night to watch Captain America: The Winter Soldier on BBC1. Wasn't cut as much as I thought it would be, but disappointed that they cut the scene on the Helicarrier right at the end!

Last night, I watched two of the very best Christmas films of all time in my opinion, namely

Home Alone
Home Alone 2

I have always had a place in my heart for these two films and I usually watch them every Christmas. I have seen them both countless times and I vividly still remember watching the first film at the cinema back in 1990. Everything in these films seemed to work and they gel and flow very well. I think that they are two examples of films where the first sequel was as good as the original, in my humble opinion. I have never seen any of the other sequels, though and quite frankly I have no desire to. I would be too afraid that I wouldn't enjoy them and that they would tarnish the memory and legacy of these two great films. I have never been very keen on Macauley Culkin, though, but I can just about tolerate him in these.

I own both of these films on DVD and they are the highlight of every year's Christmas viewing, for me. I still find them extremely entertaining and enjoyable all of these years later. Anyway, I give Home Alone a straight 10/10 and also Home Alone 2 10/10, as they are both equal and both deserve to be regarded as comedy classics. I don't think that Culkin ever made another film quite like these and they are films that anyone would be proud to include on their CV. I will never tire of watching these for as long as I live.

All The President's Men [1976]. Director: Alan J. Pakula

8/10

The classic movie about the Watergate scandal. American politics hasn't gotten any better this year.

Loving (2016)- It was OK but a little slow for my liking. I can see why it's getting Oscar buzz as it was typical Oscar bait 6/10

They Live (1988)

Although it's superficially an alien takeover film from John Carpenter, it's really a commentary about the harsh effects of unrestrained free market economics. While relatively low budget, it's well done and very entertaining.

Verdict = 9/10

Jack Reacher (2016) Pretty dull for a Tom Cruise film, more like a made-for-TV film than a cinema release. A thriller by numbers but i made it to the end so 4.5/10

Magnificent 7 (2016) There is a seen it all before feel about the film so its just ok rather than great, the best bit is when the theme tune starts at the end, its worth watching just to see that bit. 5.5/10

Amazon Prime Video.

Well put together documentary-movie from Ron Howard with some footage that I'd never seen before. It really shows what a huge impact they made in such a short space of time.

It is an excellent film and a faithful adaptation of Andy Weir's book of the same name (which l also recommend). I recommend this interview with Andy Weir here: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=5SemyzKgaUU

In addition, Jordan's Wadi Rum served as the location for Mars and all the cinematographers have to do is colourise the sky from blue to pink: https://www.google.co.uk/search?biw=....0.dhXc8vrF1jU (the film Last Days on Mars was also filmed there)

It is a good and moving film which stands the test of time and l recommend it to anyone who hasn't seen it before.

You might like the very good 2015 film Spotlight which is also centred on a newsroom.

Appaloosa [2008]. Director: Ed Harris

7/10

Traditional Western (plus a few cusswords and nudity) with Ed Harris and Viggo Mortensen the lawmen hired to take on villainous rancher Jeremy Irons. Harris also directed, co-produced, co-scripted and co-wrote and sang the end title song.

*******
The Outlaw Josey Wales [1976]. Director: Clint Eastwood

8/10

But Clint does it better, as the Southerner getting revenge on the treacherous Union troop who murdered his family.

An American Werewolf in London (1981)

Haven't seen this for years although I've always loved it.

It still stands up, and is very funny and scary. Wonderful stuff.

Lord of War (2008)

Watched loads of Nic Cage over Christmas for some reason. Did the same last year as well. Becoming a bit of a tradition! Anyway, very much enjoyed this. Excellent performance from Nic and a strong tale.

8/10.

I Give It A Year (2013)

I don't normally buy or watch romantic comedies, but this was recommended to me by a friend. I ordered it from Amazon and watched it yesterday.

I have to say, I thoroughly enjoyed it. It was very funny throughout the whole of the film, it had a very good cast and it kept my attention. It is a British film and from Working Title Films, who also made Four Weddings, Notting Hill, Love Actually and Shaun Of The Dead. amongst others. They were also responsible for making the disappointing Krays film Legend in 2015, which I have reviewed previously on DS.

I Give It A Year was an excellent film and extremely entertaining. I Give I Give It A Year 10/10!

I really enjoyed this too. It's one of the better rom-coms out there
