My Cousin Vinny - no grade
I finally remembered why I rarely watch 1990s-era films featuring Joe Pesci. His badly-done facelift - temporary or not - can be so distracting that I couldn't focus on following the story. Happened with The Public Eye, Casino, JFK and Jimmy Hollywood. And this film. Oh, well. |

Love & Mercy
Biopic of Beach Boys genius Brian Wilson, and the struggle to free himself from his shady "therapist" who had taken complete control over Brian's life & finances. The movie flits back and forth between Brian's descent into mental illness at his creative peak in the mid 60s to the late 80s where he met his current wife who helped free him from his repugnant therapist. Paul Dano is excellent and convincing as young Brian, John Cusack less so as his older troubled self. As expected the music is glorious and it's an interesting look at how fame, wealth and mental illness can impact on a fragile mind, and how empathy and understanding can free that person. 8/10 |

The Exorcist
This must have been the third or fourth time I've watched this and it's the first time I've noticed the subliminal images, or at least a saw one of them; I had no idea they were in there 9/10

Yurusarezaru mono (see below) (2013)
A Japanese remake of Unforgiven, Clint Eastwood's 1992 western film, with Ken Watanabe in Eastwood's role as Jubei Kamata, who's trying to live in retirement with his child in Hokkaido (northern Japan) during the 1880s when he's called out to do a job. It's quite faithful, well made and poignant. Well done to director Sang-il Lee. However, I'm never that keen on western films and Japanese period films, so I wasn't that involved with the film. Hence, no grade. Good film, though. (Yurusarezaru mono = literally, 'the person is not forgiven' or 'unforgiven person'; so it can be translated as 'The Unforgiven' or just 'Unforgiven'.) |

The Night of the Werewolf (1981)
Fun little B movie. The dubbing is hilarious. I encourage any fan of B Horror Movies to check out Channel 237 (FoTV) on Sky. Some real little gems on there! |

Avengers: Age of Ultron
Lovely effects, especially Ultron, and Spader's voice is a perfect fit...but that's where the good stuff ends. They killed off my favourtie Avenger, for no special reason, messed up another one, and having made the Vision look right completely ignored his established powers! Add to this a pointless sidestep into romance, between characters who were NEVER involved in the comics, and making the third rate character War Machine a team member (presumably to appease some demographic), has finished this franchise for me. No mas, to quote Roberto Duran. I may give the Civil War movie a look, but the Avengers - like the Feeble Four - have become something very different, and very crap, aimed at 12 year-olds who want big explosions and no actual story. |

Hackers - Saw bits and pieces of this when I was a kid since it used to play on Channel 5 all the time but man has this aged. 'Hackers' wasn't just an on the nose term for criminal computer geeks breaking into unauthorised data, there was a huge sub-culture and philosophy behind the idea in the 90s. The film tries to explore this but the plot is contrived even as far as ludicrous plots go and the dialogue is pretty bad. Not Angelina Jolie's finest hour either.
4/10 The Visit - Latest effort by M Night Shyamalan who brings this film under the radar. A found footage film about two siblings who are sent off to visit their grandparents for the week, who aren't quite what they seem. I still find myself defending Shyamalan (people have started to to turn on his earlier work too...) because he's talented so I wanted to give this a chance. Not quite the comeback I was hoping for but a huge step in the right direction nonetheless after his last two horror shows. I get a kick out of found footage films anyway (though I understand the hate for this genre) and this was well done for the most part. There are enough good scares and the kid characters are likeable but you can see where the story is headed. 6/10 |

Just creeped up to a 8/10, and it's far too long. It is better when examining the morality on all sides. |
