Les Diaboliques [1955]
Very enjoyable French chiller. Recommended for anyone who likes Alfred Hitchcock films. 8/10 |

Deep Impact
Funny. On paper Deep Impact is pure garbage - disaster porn with soap opera inserts. But Mimi Leder doesn't half conjure a horribly persuasive film out of it, and this sort of consumate skill can only be applauded. 8/10 School of Rock Jack Black surprisingly engaging in fun, feel-good comedy that generally hits all the right notes. 7.5/10 Damage Gloomy undertones rumble away in Louis Malle's sex-charged adaptation. A lot of care has gone into making it convincing, but it sadly rings a bit hollow - and the book was very hollow. Moments impress mind. 6/10 |

Office Space (1999)
Maybe my expectations were too high after reading good reports and reviews but I found this no more than mildly amusing. The running gags were pretty lame and even the appearance of Jennifer Aniston could barely lift it above average. 5.5/10 |

Ip Man
The rest of the film doesn't quite match up to the fight scenes. 7/10 |

The Visit - 4/10
Great idea for a film with a brilliant twist. Just very, very poorly executed. |

In Cold Blood
Richard Brooks's '67 adaptation of Truman Capote's famous tome. It will always be overshadowed by the book of course, but this is a fantastic film in its own right. Conrad Hall's cinematography looks the business even on a cheap DVD, so Lord knows how good the restoration looks (it's currently on limited rerelease). Something of a lost classic perhaps. 9/10 The Jacket Convoluted headtrip horror. A little too clumsy to really pull it off, but the brashness keeps you on board. 6/10 |

Maze Runner: The Scorch Trials (2015) - 6/10 9-year-old son's verdict: 10/10.
A serviceable Boys Own Adventure with a mostly fast-paced, chaotic plot that seemed to flounder at times. It's made an effort to separate itself from the first Maze Runner film by having a different setting, pacing and rota of characters. I'm still not sure if it's succeeded. When comparing with the first film, the sequel is an improvement in some respects and not so in other respects. Then again, I was largely indifferent to the first film, which has probably influenced my reaction to its sequel. My 9-year-old loves it, though. During the third part of the film, he fidgeted a bit, which is a sure sign of him getting bored. Regardless, he wants to see it again. This makes the sequel a success in his books, then. He's determined that we'll watch the third (and hopefully final) MR film. ![]() The ending of this film (and the previous film) reminded me how much I dislike a certain type of endings. For those who're curious:

Mild spoilers most likely...
Interstellar I went in not really knowing what to expect. Somehow I managed to avoid this big one, although I'm usually quick off the mark with Nolan films - not necessarily because of him but because the films in question appeal to me thematically. As it happens though, I am in two minds about the film and haven't yet decided on quite how much I like it. The core problem for me is the sentimental aspect of the film. I've no problem with a film being sentimental, sometimes even veering towards gushy. The tricky thing is though that sentiment has to be warmly received, and this just left me cold. The father-child relationship was such a pivotal drive for the film and yet it felt utterly unconvincing. That's not a slight on actors old or young as everyone involved did brilliantly, but perhaps with the dialogue, with the way it was made to be delivered. It felt more an obligation to the story than actual character development. The daughter began following in her fathers footsteps despite a resentment of him, their final scene in the film together felt totally unnatural (again, serving the plot) and devoid of how people would really have responded, and perhaps the biggest problem is that the relationship just wasn't shown - it was told. We get one long scene in a school that ultimately builds to nothing - it shows a dad who doesn't want to be at the school for his kids, and most dissatisfyingly the role that the forgotten son plays in all of this - he's just there to serve as a would-be antagonist later on and doesn't actually get developed at all. In fact the kids, and the neglect towards including the son in the story, almost single-handedly let the film down and make the whole thing a bit of a dissatisfying and depressing ride. Beyond that, the other characters aren't particularly well written at all and the film is a showcase of Nolan's technical capabilities but definitely not of his abilities to actually write convincing people. Anne Hathaway and Matthew McConaughey are brilliant throughout and even make some scenes genuinely emotional with their skill (Michael Caine also gets a very poignant moment)... even with the dialogue in the background diminshing it somewhat. There's also very interesting ideas at play that are quite thought provoking, though they're seldom as clever as I think they think they are - nor as unpredictable. The whole thing looks brilliant though, and I'm a sucker for a Hans Zimmer score. I think there was potential here for a superb movie that could easily have been one that headlined the decade. But it wasn't to be. For the issues it has it needed to be shorter, or for the length it is (at nearly three hours) it needed to be more efficiently written. It is so dependent on those characters working - the father, the daughter, the son. One of them is completely neglected and forgotten, the other two don't quite have the chemistry they needed to to make the whole thing work. I think overall it suffers because absolutely everything is piled in to get the plot moving along, and so the whole thing feels a bit more like a chore than it should. Ultimately it has what should be a somewhat optimistic ending that is also shrouded in some ambiguity, instead I feel dissatisfied by how it left the characters...which is a bad place to leave yourself for such a character-driven film. 7/10 Cinderella I expected the absolute worst of this movie. I quite enjoyed Maleficent, almost wholly down to Angelina Jolie's portrayal and the fact that as Disney villains go she's definitely up there among the best. But I can also see why many had issue with it too, and for me that's what Cinderella was before I saw it - with Jolie and the mistress of all evil out of the way, there was little in the way to draw me into a live-action remake of one of the slightly lesser Disney classics - the trailers did it no favours. I was pleasantly surprised then, that the film actually delivered something quite nice. It was a refreshingly on-point adaptation that didn't veer off course very much, didn't try to rework the tale, didn't throw a huge spanner in the works. Once the film got going and you saw it was an honest retelling you had some idea of what to expect from there. What really impressed is that outside of the scenes with the pumking transformation (and subsequent revert) and a few mice who squeak just on the side of human communication there's no magic here and it's a very down-to-earth story. It's not particularly inspiring, but then it doesn't demand much of you either. Kenneth Branagh did a great job with the whole thing, it looked superb and there was just that extra dash of backstory to Cinderella and the stepmother (Cate Blanchett is quite good in this, though doesn't get much chance to really show what she's capable of) to help it really pay off. I think the narration from Helena Bonham Carter's Fairy Godmother sometimes felt a bit junior, and was clearly aimed at drawing the kids back in after a few too many lingering ballroom scenes, but aside from that it did what I expected it to, and was far less tacky about it than I was expecting as well. 7/10 |

Out Of The Furnace
Christian Bale avenges his brother's death at the hand of Woody Harleson's psycho redneck hillbilly. Decent film with some great performances but it's unremittingly bleak 7/10 |

Watched a couple of Kirk Douglas films........
The Heroes of Telemark - Not bad. Improved as it went on. Not sure if I'll ever re-watch it, though. Ace in the Hole - Excellent film. Recommended. |
