Never Let Me Go.
I love this film, so I'm not going to be a very impartial critic. It's so heartbreaking. Wonderful film making. |

A Most Violent Year - Compelling (though unoriginal) drama about a major business owner in rough 70s New York who tries to keep to the right side of the law whilst keeping his rivals at bay and maintains his innocence as the state threatens to prosecute him for alleged skullduggery. Gorgeously shot and a great cast (Albert Brooks is unrecognisable) but it's merely just a throwback to a bygone era of cinema than something that stands on its own two feet.
7/10 Another Earth - Sci-fi/drama about a teenage girl who is involved in a horrible tragedy who then tries to cope with her conscience, all the while when a new Earth like planet appears in the sky. Would be worth watching this with Melancholia I think as a companion piece. 8/10 The East - Brit Marling (again!) in an eco-thriller about a private security agent who's sent into infiltrate an eco terrorist group. Nothing that hasn't been done before in terms of the central character and whether the audience thinks they're still on the side of their employer or whether they've changed. 6/10 The Orphanage - Horror film about an orphanage, no further description needed Its preposterous in terms of plot but I still cowered behind the sofa. The production values are incredibly high for its budget and looks more impressive than its Hollywood counterparts which are often given far bigger sums to play with.7/10 |

Flushed Away - 8/10
I enjoyed spotting the Easter Eggs throughout e.g. a copy of A Brief History Of Slime on the toad's bookshelf and the pacing was the best I can recall in a film. I'm not really a fan of Wallace & Gromit so didn't have high expectations for this but I found it to be very good. |

Lovelace 10 / 10.
This was a disturbing film about a woman who was coerced into porn and acted in the infamous 70s porn film Deep Throat. She was also beaten and prostituted by her husband who kept control of her money. Deep Throat made millions and she never saw much more than a thousand dollars in cash. It was a very good film and showed what her reality was like. Her husband was basically her pimp and when she begged her mother to let her move back in with her parents she was told to obey her husband. This was in the very early 70s in America. In the UK too women vowed to obey their husbands in marriage which is no longer the case thankfully. When Linda "Lovelace" was laying in the road bleeding after being assaulted by her husband the police let him go free and shockingly asked for her autograph while she was bleeding in front of them. A very moving film. |

The Age of Adeline (Sky On Demand)
Wasn't expecting to enjoy this, the wife fancied it. Not bad at all, and it has Harrison Ford in it who can do no wrong in my opinion. There is a flashback scene in it and the actor who plays Harrison's younger character is uncannily like him in looks and mannerisms. |

Silent House - Didn't realise until half way through that this had been filmed in relly long takes. The gimmick didn't add anything, it's such a dull 'pyschological horror' which consists of the main character running around a house for 90 minutes, culminting in one of the most silly twists.
2/10 The Babadook - Eerie horror family drama about a single mother living with her increasingly difficult son. Didn't find it scary but there were parts that were visually inventive. 7/10 |

Casino Royale [2006]
I think people forget just how good this film is after all the Skyfall hype, it might have something to do with Quantum of Solace almost killing Craig's Bond. 8/10 |

The Drop
Tom Hardy and Jams Gandolfini star in this low-key crime thriller about a Brooklyn bar used as a cash drop for the local mob. Not bad, kind of like "The Town" if you like that sort of thing. 7/10 |
