A Most Violent Year - Compelling (though unoriginal) drama about a major business owner in rough 70s New York who tries to keep to the right side of the law whilst keeping his rivals at bay and maintains his innocence as the state threatens to prosecute him for alleged skullduggery. Gorgeously shot and a great cast (Albert Brooks is unrecognisable) but it's merely just a throwback to a bygone era of cinema than something that stands on its own two feet.

Another Earth - Sci-fi/drama about a teenage girl who is involved in a horrible tragedy who then tries to cope with her conscience, all the while when a new Earth like planet appears in the sky. Would be worth watching this with Melancholia I think as a companion piece.

The East - Brit Marling (again!) in an eco-thriller about a private security agent who's sent into infiltrate an eco terrorist group. Nothing that hasn't been done before in terms of the central character and whether the audience thinks they're still on the side of their employer or whether they've changed.

The Orphanage - Horror film about an orphanage, no further description needed

Its preposterous in terms of plot but I still cowered behind the sofa. The production values are incredibly high for its budget and looks more impressive than its Hollywood counterparts which are often given far bigger sums to play with.
