The Dish (2000)

An Australian 'small town' comedy about the Parkes Radio Telescope which played a major part in the live transmission of Apollo 11 mission and Neil Armstrong's historic first step on the Moon. Some good laid back Aussie humour.

7/10

Great Expectations (1946)

"What larks, Pip!" Oh, absolutely. 10/10

An American Werewolf in London

Hugely entertaining comedy horror that hasn't aged a day. Sly, irreverent, pop-fast and, underneath, very clever. 9/10

The Visit

M. Night Shymalan's current low-budgeter is really no more than a shaky-cam variant on the Old Dark House routine. Does okay in fits and spurts, the twist is pretty good, but the heaped spoonfuls of sugary sentiment (and the trite kids 'issues') may have you yearning for a diet version. 6/10

Under The Skin last night on Film4.In a word 'mesmerising'.
I kept on trying to figure out what the hell was going on.But it really pulled me in.What a wierd film.Beautiful Scottish scenery, ace motorbike riding and good music.
Scarlett Johansen getting her kit off at the end was a bonus.

I haven't seen this in years, and it's on Netflix; unfortunately Netflix appear to have uploaded a 4:3 VHS copy to their servers. It is unwatchable.

The Spectacular Now (2013) 6/10

A party-loving high school student depicted exactly as he transits to adulthood.

The film tries far too hard to convey emotion.

The Hunter [1980]
Steve McQueen's last film. It's not very good, and it has a terrible running joke throughout that the character is a terrible driver, but look it's Steve McQueen!!! Hahahahaha... 5/10 cause it gets a point added because, look it's Steve McQueen.

Just watched The Day of the Triffids (1963) it was on Talking Pictures TV.
Was a bit dated but an OK film I give it a 6 out of 10.

No Tears For The Dead (2014) 7/10

Quote:
“"U-neun nam-ja"

A hit man traumatized from accidentally killing a young girl during a job is given the mission to eliminate her mother, and begins the ultimate fight to save her life.”

An inferior "A Man From Nowhere", but still pretty good.

Mostly Disney stuff seen last week:

Tom and Huck [1995]. Director: Peter Hewitt

5/10

Disney does Twain. Shame they got Stephen Sommers to write it.

********
Sunshine on Leith [2013]. Director: Dexter Fletcher

5/10

Film version of the stage musical bases on Proclaimers songs. Like most people I only know the one, which is left for the big climax with thousands of extras on the streets of Edinburgh (by far the best bit of the movie).

********
Return To Never Land [2002], Directors: Robin Budd & Donovan Cook

5/10

Direct-to-video sequel

********
Meet the Deedles [1998]. Director: Steve Boyum

2/10

The Feebles, more like

********
Young Black Stallion [2013], Director: Simon Wincer

6/10

Slight (hour long) IMAX tale made by Kennedy/Marshall for Disney

********
Planes [2013]. Director: Klay Hall

7/10

Non-Pixar follow-up to Cars is charming and amusing.

*******
Tall Tale [1995]. Director: Jeremiah S. Chechik

5/10

Fantasy western

********
Tuck Everlasting [2002]. Director: Jay Russell

7/10

Teenage girl romances an immortal. Will she drink the water of eternal life to join him?

Black Mass - bit of a borefest really, full of unlikeable/uninteresting characters and just seemed to meander from scene to scene. The Boston accents sported by all the main players were none too convincing also 5/10
