Weird Woman [1944] Director: Reginald le Borg

6/10

Adaptation of Fritz Leiber's novel "Conjure Wife" has various scream queens competing for Lon Chaney Jr.'s affections.

*******
Shaft [2000]. Director: John Singleton

6/10

Samuel L. Jackson makes this re-make worthwhile as he pursues Christian Bale's rich racist thug.

*******
American Psycho [2000]. Director: Mary Harron

6/10

Bale's other movie of 2000 playing a yuppie psychopath.

*******
School for Scoundrels [1960]. Director: Robert Hamer

5/10

A disappointment given the director and cast (Ian Carmichael, Terry-Thomas, Alastair Sim, Janette Scott and a supporting cast of British comedy worthies).

Was coming on to say the same! Watched it on Saturday night, very harrowing but superb film. My grandad was briefly a POW in Japan during WWII, so it was a very poignant film for me.

Predators - 7/10

The ending was a tad drawn out
Spoiler
it should have ended with the newer Predator killing the old one with Adrian Brody running off into the distance
but overall, it was quite a good watch.

Four Weddings and a Funeral - Richard Curtis rom-com that made Hugh Grant a star. Big problem I have is how self conciously 'English' the whole thing is. Characters constantly saying 'bugger' and the f word. We get it, you want to show how wonderfully snarky middle England is. Hugh Grant is sympathetically hapless though.

Hitchcock 7/10

Anthony Hopkins hams up to play the lead role, and does a good job. Sad and funny in equal measures and quite interesting.

Violet & Daisy [2011]. Director: Geoffrey Fletcher

6/10

Having won an Oscar for adapting Precious, Fletcher was given the chance to write and direct a feature, a quirky tale of 2 teenage assassins (though Alexis Bledel was pushing 30 when she shot it). James Gandolfini effortlessly steals the show as their intended target.

*******
A Ship Bound for India [1947]. Director: Ingmar Bergman

6/10

Bergman's 3rd feature has a a guy who is going blind competing with his hunchbacked son for the affections of a showgirl.

*******
Bande à Part [1964]. Director: Jean-Luc Godard

8/10

After the Technicolor widescreen Le Mépris with Brigitte Bardot, Godard returned to his Nouvelle Vague roots with this loose adaptation of an American crime novel transposed to the streets of Paris and starring Anna Karina (Mrs Godard at the time). Quentin Tarantino loves this movie so much he named his production company A Band Apart. The famous dance scene was influential not just on Pulp Fiction but also on Hal Hartley's Simple Men:

I watched The Four-Sided Triangle (1953) a British sci-fi/drama about two friends who invent a duplicating machine and one of the friends decides to duplicate his friend's wife.

It was quite good. Low budget but it exceeded my expectations.

Go check it out.

I give it 6/10.

Survivor - Spy thriller with Mila Jolovich and Pierce Brosnan. Not particularly original but at least it doesn't outstay its welcome.

7/10

The Flowers of War - Set during the darkest days of the second China/Japan war when Imperial Japanese forces stormed the city of Nanking and raped many thousands of women and killed possibly up to hundreds of thousands of civilians. Caused a bit of controversy when it came out because the film focused on a fictional American character (albeit based on a real person who was actually female) who looked after a group of school girls as well prostitues during the city's occupation rather than the wider atrocity. For sure there's probably a better telling of this horrible episode out there but for the most part I thought the film was told with honest intentions by Zhang Yimou.

7/10

Insidious: Chapter 3 - Prequel to the first two Insidious films. More of the same really in terms of approach.

The Road - Viggo Mortensen. Don't think I've ever watched a more depressing film.

Going by the ending, it seems money was the vastly more important factor in doing 3 sequels rather than any artistic vision.

The Walk - fun and thrilling adaptation of an amazing true story 8/10
Very surprised by how badly this has flopped

Hangover 2 - first one is overrated in my opinion so didn't rush to watch this lacklustre sequel generous 5/10

Are you confusing Battle Los Angeles with Edge of Tomorrow?
Don't remember Michelle Rodriguez waving a sword around in BLA. But Emily Blunt did have a sword in EoT.

Mad Max: Fury Road - I'm still exhausted from this never-ending action-fest. Tom Hardy's wandering accent aside - 8/10
