Circle 7.5/10

An indie film somewhere between The Twilight Zone and Black Mirror.

50 people wake up in a strange room and soon work out that they have to vote on who dies, with 2 minutes between each death.

The usual race, religion, class discussions ensue but it's very well done and moves along at a good pace, what with the 2 minute limitation each time.

I though the acting was pretty good and the twist was unexpected.

Well worth a watch although I'm not sure where people would see it (I saw it online).

The Green Inferno (2013) - released 2015

http://www.imdb.com/title/tt2403021/

I was looking forward to this, supposed horror film, but it was terrible.

I don't know who the actors were but they were appalling. Not entirely 100% their fault as the script was dire and the plot and scenes very poor.

The ending was just so awful.

Just 2/10.

Vingt et une Nuits avec Pattie [2015]. Directors: Arnaud Larrieu & Jean-Marie Larrieu

6/10

French rural drama with a nymphomaniac and a suspected necrophiliac. Somewhat surreal but it all looks fabulous in the sun.

*******
Enchanted [2007]. Director: Kevin Lima

7/10

Enchanting NY fairy tale.

*******
Dead Man's Eyes [1944]. Director: Reginald le Borg

5/10

Lon Chaney Jr. as an artist who has cornea transplants from a man he's suspected of murdering. Co-staring the exotic Acquanetta (born Mildred Davenport).

*******
Ouija [2014]. Director: Stiles White

5/10

Supernatural tale with a lame plot. Ouija boards are just more silly than scary. Still raked in 20 times its budget.

The Disappearance of Alice Creed - 6/10, although I'm strongly tempted to revise it down to 5/10

The last 40 minutes or so were disappointing.

Don't remember Michelle Rodriguez waving a sword around in BLA. But Emily Blunt did have a sword in EoT.

Mad Max: Fury Road - I'm still exhausted from this never-ending action-fest. Tom Hardy's wandering accent aside - 8/10”

Definatly Battle of Los Angeles I think the one you mention is a different film with a similar name ....this one starred Kel Mitchell and Nia Peebles and it was Peebles who used the sword ! it was hilarious really !

I was watching the original today. The scene at the end when Rambo is in the restaurant with his old boss is actually quite moving.Once you figure out what he's actually saying.
A real reality check about the reception GI's got when they returned from Vietnam.

Crimson Peak - 9/10

I loved it. I think people going in expecting a horror movie will hate it, though.

Lolly-Madonna XXX (1973) 8/10

Vietnam war allegory about two feuding Tennessee mountain families starring Rod Steiger, Robert Ryan, Jeff Bridges, Scott Wilson, Season Hubley, Ed Lauter, Randy Quaid, Kiel Martin & Gary Busey.

Atmospheric and ultimately very sad.

I can't decide whether the ending is either brilliant or just terrible.

The Lobster 9/10

Dystopian black comedy. .strange. .but really enjoyed it..if that's the word! I recommend if you like different films..it's not really arty..just an outlandish premise. .or is it?!

I think there was a thread recently about that speech and it's probably not given the recognition that it deserves.

Saying that, it's bloody hard to hear what he's saying

Crimson Peak. Nice to look at, but moves at snail's pace. As Grandpa Simpson once said, "I've coughed up scarier stuff than that". Though, appreciate it's more of a gothic horror and romance, it only really picked up in the last 30 mins or so. Something different at least.

The Program. As someone who didn't know all the ins and outs of the Lance Armstrong scandal, thought this was really great with a steely eyed performance by Ben Foster. Interspersed with lots of actual cycle footage of Armstrong and key races, and his battles with cancer and ultimate deceit, I was pretty gripped throughout. Best of a poor week's releases.

When the Lights went Out. (Via Amazon Prime for 99p). Dramatisation of The Maynard Haunting in the 60s in Yorkshire. Very similar to Sky's recent The Enfield Haunting, this was a surprisingly effective chiller that evoked the feel of the period. Some scenes actually made me stop mobile surfing and stay glued to the screen! Good use of sound, reigned in sfx and real sense of dread. Good central performance by the two girl schoolfriends (bathroom visit scene was unbearably tense). If you like poltergeist tales, this is quite perfect for a cold October Halloween night. Recommended.

Self/less. (2015)

My rating 7.5. Rotten Tomatoes rating: 20%.
I cannot recall that kind of big discrepancy before. IMDb give it 6.5.

It is not perfect. There are 2 or 3 moments where the lines are a bit wooden and maybe needed a retake. But the pace is relentless and some of you will be moved.
But most surprising of all.....nobody has mentioned it here? (maybe the search function has let me down).

'Father of my children' (France 2009) 8/10

A family man is put under intense financial stress.

The film changes in character half way through, necessarily perhaps, and becomes more meditative. A superb acting performance by the father - quiet despair personified.

The Martian (2015)

It's a faithful adaptation of Andy Weir's original book of the same name. It's got strong and credible characters and a good, fast-paced plot. Overall, it's excellent entertainment.

Verdict = 10/10

Just watched The Runaways taped off C4 other night. Not the most engrossing story ever but enjoyable and much better than I was expecting considering that it didn't do too well on its cinema release. 7/10.
