The Lobster. 7/10. 3 points deducted for editing. However great performances and a very interesting plot.

HOT PURSUIT - 4/10
terrible mush that thinks it's thelma and louis but with less nuance

ARGO - 7/10
ridiculous story about a ridiculous real life event, played with quietness and naval gazing intensity

Slumdog Millionaire 8.5/10

Just finished watching it on Film4, can't resist it every time it's on. I love the kids in it - they act their socks off. The story of hope, perseverance and survival and all the wonderful little stories that make up not just his life, but the unexpected answers that win him the show (and the girl!).

All the actors are great, but I do have a soft spot for Dev Patel, which increased greatly during my love of The Newsroom.

Whiplash - 7.5/10

I'd avoided this because it came out at about the same time as Birdman, which I hated because of the horrible jazz drumming in the soundtrack (amongst so many other things), so the thought of watching a movie all about jazz drumming really didn't appeal. I got over that though, and actually enjoyed this movie a lot. Very strong characters, well performed, looked good and I actually enjoyed the music in it despite not really being a jazz fan.

Kingsman - 6.5/10

I don't think Jane Goldman is the strongest screenwriter in the world and I'm not really a Matthew Vaughn fan (I'm one of the few who preferred Kick-Ass 2) but it did its job and entertained.

I watched both Kingsman and Kick-Ass 2 again just the other day. I still prefer the first one but I enjoyed Kick-Ass 2 more this time round. That may have been because I recently watched a documentary called Superheroes about real life "superheroes" and Kick-Ass 2 reminded me of that a bit. A lot actually, and fact is often stranger than fiction.

Still love Kingsman though, very funny, comically brutal movie, only slightly spoiled by the gratuitous scene with the princess. Unnecessary.

Carrie (the original) 7/10
First time I've seen it. Obviously the best scene is at the prom where she lets fiery vengeance rain down upon those bastards. Oh how I wish I could have done that in my high school.

Ant Man - Not a Marvel fan but this one's a bit more low key and all the more engaging for it.. best Marvel film since Iron Man 1 for my money 8/10

American Ultra- A rather bizarre young adult Bourne style movie, comedy didn't really work in it even Teen Agent with Richard Grieco did it better 5/10

Spectre. Back to classic Bond . Loved it 10/10

It's strange how mixed the reviews are as I think this is a spectacular and hugely enjoyable film. I agree with the Guardian: "Bond is back and Daniel Craig is back in a terrifically exciting, spectacular, almost operatically delirious 007 adventure – endorsing intelligence work as old-fashioned derring-do and incidentally taking a stoutly pro-Snowden line against the creepy voyeur surveillance that undermines the rights of a free individual. It’s pure action mayhem with a real sense of style...."

In other words - a typical fun Bond film, which Skyfall wasn't: typical Bond, that is. Skyfall was my favourite film of the year but if anyone was expecting the same sort of angst as that one, then of course they'll be disappointed

Dreams [1955] . Director: Ingmar Bergman

7/10

A tale of two women and their failed affairs.

*******
Lassie [1994]. Director: Daniel Petrie

5/10

Modernised version featuring a skateboarding kid, sheep rustlers and a 13 year old Michelle Williams as the love interest (her first movie role).

*******
The Day of the Jackal [1973]. Director: Fred Zinnemann

7/10

Enjoyable if fanciful assassin yarn.

*******
The Internship [2013]. Director: Shawn Levy

5/10

Vince Vaughn & Owen Wilson as two 40-somethings enrolled on Google's internship program. Presumably made with Google's approval, their operation looks horrendous.

*******
First Night [2010]. Director: Christopher Menaul

6/10

Richard E. Grant as a rich opera lover putting on a performance of Mozart's Cosi fan tutte at his huge country manor house whilst the cast engage in various sexual liaisons in the build up. All good fun.

The Texas Chainsaw Massacre

Influential horror, never quite equalled. It's also improved with age, with its dank, festering atmosphere seemingly more vivid than ever. A genuinely grim and horrible film, albeit in the best way. 9/10

Dead Silence

Lesser-known James Wan horror, where his usual overblown touch acquires a certian delirious appeal, like some EC comic adaptation for ADHD kids. It's twaddle of course, but it has its moments and the evil ventriloquist dummy is one of cinema's better ones. 5.5/10
