Les Misérables [2012]. Director: Tom Hooper

7/10

There are better (non musical) versions of the novel. Whoever cast Russell Crowe messed up this film - he's appalling. Hugh Jackman and Eddie Redmayne much better as the heroes and Anne Hathaway and Samantha Barks better still as the tragic heroines.

The Bridge on the River Kwai [1957]. Director: David Lean

8/10

Alec Guinness is stunningly good in this and deservedly won his only Oscar.

The 40 Year Old Virgin - Comedy about said titular character. Has its funny moments but I think Steve Carrell is a bit too charismatic to play a 40 year old virgin.

6/10

Mr Holmes - A retired Sherlock Holmes tries to piece together the details regarding his final case as his memory fails whilst befriending Mrs Munroe's son. Charming drama.

7/10

Talladega Nights: The Ballad of Ricky Bobby - Adam Mckay comedy about a Nascar driver. Makes fun of Southern US culture, though a few of the jokes went over my head. Always found Will Ferrell to be a funny screen presence.

Hush Hush Sweet Charlotte - 3/10. Gets a three purely for Bette Davis. It's a poor man's "Whatever happened to baby jane".

Sunset Boulevard - 8/10 - Stunning, astonishing performances and thought provoking

Holiday Camp (1947) Mass holidaying at Butlins, its Knees Up Mother Brown in the dance hall, bathing beauty's contest by the pool, Charlie Chester in the theater and all manner of skullduggery elsewhere. A culturally, historically and aesthetically significant film. 7/10

Been checking out some kids stuff:

Time Bandits

Superlative and superbly unhinged dream-like, Python-hued fantasy. If there was a moment when inventiveness dropped I must've blinked and missed it. 9/10

Bridge to Terabithia

Startling mature drama with a real kick. Great performances, with Robert Patrick impressive as the father who's more than just the a-hole he seems (which is one of the things we learn growing up I suppose). One to check out if you've missed it. 8/10

Lemony Snicket's A Series of Unfortunate Events

What went wrong here? Great source material, game cast, tremendous art direction - yet it all felt so flat. If ever there was a film in need of Tim Burton's lyrical touch it was this. 5.5/10

In Security [2013]. Directors: Evan Beamer & Adam Beamer

2/10

Two losers who run a security systems business decide to improve sales by turning to house-breaking. The title was the best thing about it so the US distributor changed it to "Armed Response" which makes it sound like an action movie.

*******
The Right Stuff [1983]. Director: Phillip Kaufman

7/10

There's a mythic quality about the early scenes of this story of the early US astronauts, though the film is overlong and drifts into soap opera.

*******
Enough Said [2013]. Director: Nicole Holofcener

7/10

Amiable romantic comedy of two middle-aged divorcees. James Gandolfini, in one of his last roles, is fabulous as the guy in a movie that carries the dedication "For Jim". A great talent gone too soon.

A Nightmare on Elm Street 3: Dream Warriors - More of the same. Interesting seeing a young Laurence Fishburne and Patricia Arquette.

6/10

Southpaw - By the numbers though still watchable boxing drama with Jake Gyllenhaal. He does his homework with his physique but he still can't shake off his puppy dog looks which makes it hard for me to take him seriously. Then again, that Tyson Fury bloke doesn't exactly look the most menacing guy ever so what do I know

6/10

The Perks of Being A Wallflower - Stuffy but still enjoyable coming of age drama. I didn't think I was going to like this since I heard people comparing it to Juno.

Ansatsu Kyoushitsu (Assassination Classroom) (2015) - 6/10

Film adaptation of Yuusei Matsui's cult comic, which revolves around a group of high school losers, who're being taught in classical subjects and trained as assassins at a traditional classroom in the middle of a forest by what they call 'Unkillable Teacher', an alien in form of a yellow octopus in a school professor's gown. The target of their assassination? The unkillable teacher himself.

While Unkillable Teacher teaches them to learn loving classical subjects and improving their killing techniques, they come to regard him as their greatest teacher for believing in them when no one else did. This becomes a dilemma because they know that if they failed to kill him before their graduation day, Unkillable Teacher will destroy their world that day.

Yes, it's as daft as it sounds. A fun popcorn film with a couple of laugh-out-loud moments. That's all you need to know, really.

Brooklyn. 7/10.loved Emory Cohen but found Saoirse Ronan very lacklustre. The film itself was excellent though.
