I'm watching Arthur Christmas at the moment.
I've only seen it once before but i'm quite enjoying it. I have way too many Christmas films to get through. I bought this one and "The Polar Express" yesterday. I watched it last night and I don't get the hype for it. Maybe it takes more than one viewing. |

Oldboy [2013]. Director: Spike Lee
6/10 Lee''s remake of a 2003 Korean original (which I've not seen) has a buffed up Josh Brolin as a man mysteriously imprisoned for 15 years now released and given 15 hours to track down his captor. Samuel Jackson has a couple of good scenes as a heavy and Elizabeth Olsen is the love interest vital to the plot. |

We're No Angels [1954]. Director: Michael Curtiz
6/10 A rare comedy role for Humphrey Bogart, teamed with Peter Ustinov & Aldo Ray as three escaped convicts who help a shopkeeper and his family out of their troubles after initially planning to rob them. Rather obviously sourced from a stage play ******* The Harry Hill Movie [2013]. Director: Steve Bendelack 2/10 Harry's an amiable chap but this film's a complete stinker. Sad to see Julie Walters and Sheridan Smith wasting their talents here. |

A Walk In The Woods (2015) Nick Nolte ( who was great ) Robert Redford and Redfords syrup commune with nature on the Appalachain Trail. Redford may not be syrupped but it looks bad, have some dignity man, him and that kid in Jurassic World will fighting out the worse barnet oscar. The film was ok, a slowpaced whimsical adventure with a few comic moments. 6/10
Crimson Peak (2015) This could have been a classic gothic horror but let down a bit by the dialogue, particularly in the first half and bits of the plot a little ropy, Del Toro just ought to stay clear of doing dialogue. But it was fantastic looking, Jessica Chastain as a mad english villain ( who would have thought !! ) Jim Beaver very good as her father, a film less than the sum of its parts. Probably the best looking film i have seen this year though. 6.5/10 |

Carol (2015) Lesbo alert , takes over an hour before the good stuff though. Most of these "gay suffering" dramas leave me cold ( that should be all rather than most ), since Philadelphia ( more an AIDSer ) its been pass the sick bucket for me, this film has broken that sequence as actually its not that bad, i had my sick bucket at the ready but didn't need it. It wasn't that great a plot or that great to look at but it was very well made. Rooney Mara will take some beating for an Oscar. A very suprised 7/10.

Shark Tale [2004]. Directors: Vicky Jenson, Bibo Bergeron & Rob Letterman
6/10 Gangster movie told as a cartoon fish tale with the voices of Robert De Niro as the mobster boss and Will Smith as our hero. ******* Lucy [2014]. Director: Luc Besson 7/10 Scarlet Johansson as an unwilling drug mule who gets injected with a consciousness-expanding drug that turns her superhuman. Another enjoyably daft Luc Besson sci-fi movie. ******* Prince Valiant [ 1954]. Director: Henry Hathaway 5/10 Comic book silliness as Robert Wagner's improbable Viking prince (complete with dodgy wig) battles James Mason's treacherous Knight at the court of King Arthur. Janet Leigh and Debra Paget play the love interest. |

Force Awakens (wife's choice) loved the original trilogy as a kid but I can take it or leave it nowadays. First half was good but the flaws seemed more apparent in the second half and found myself looking at my watch a lot in the second hour which felt a bit like a Star Wars greatest hits cover. Best bit was 'anything else?' 6/10

The Man who wasn't There [2001], Director: Joel Coen
8/10 Another fine Coen Brothers movie, a 1940's set film noir with Billy Bob Thornton getting involved in blackmail and murder. ******* To Rome with Love [2012]. Director: Woody Allen 8/10 Various intercut amusing tales of tourists in Rome. Woody gives himself a role in this one. ******* John Q [2002]. Director: Nick Cassavetes 6/10 Poor guy's son needs an expensive heart transplant but doesn't have enough health insurance. This being America he sorts things out with a gun. Denzel Washington gives the film some dignity that the script didn't warrant. |
