After growing up with western films constantly on TV, I'm not that keen on this genre and generally avoid it. My 9-year-old however is going through the phase of watching nothing but western films.
Tombstone (1993) - 8/10
Although I cringed at Powers Boothe and Michael Biehn browning up, Tombstone is surprisingly nuanced. A couple of stellar performances, particularly from Val Kilmer as Doc Halliday. I didn't like the final scene, which was too Hollywood-mawkish for my taste.
Bad Girls (1994) - no grade
Awful. We switched off after twenty minutes. I was curious enough to Google for the background on this film and found this interesting article:
The Movies of 1994: The Buried History of ‘Bad Girls,’ a Would-be Feminist Western Turned Flop. This makes me wish they hadn't fired Tamara Davis and messed with the original script.
Over next few days, we'll watch Unforgiven, The Searchers, 3:10 to Yuma, Once Upon a Time in the West, High Noon, Butch Cassidy and the Sundance Kid, Silverado, The Magnificent Seven and True Grit.
My son wanted the John Wayne version of True Grit, but I talked him into picking the Jeff Bridges version because one Wayne film (The Searchers) is enough for me as I truly can't stand him. He'll watch the Wayne version with his dad next month.
