I agree. Saw this online some weeks ago, I really enjoyed this low-budget film - although the ending was a tad confusing, it was really well done. Give it a review on IMDB, they really need the promotion.

I didn't expect him to but he could have done it a lot better. Or cast someone who can sing opera.

Face/Off

High concept 90's actioner. Cage/Travolta are both on good form, and there's something to be gleaned from the big screen silliness of it. But it's overblown and overlong, with not quite enough action to justify the excess. Woo's previous (Broken Arrow) was a better film. 6.5/10

Sicario

Something of a let-down. Drug cartel thriller that starts extremely well but sadly descends into near absurdity. It aims for the nuance and schematics of Michael Mann in his prime, and the cast are certainly up for that. But even the sophistication of Roger Deakins' moody cinematography can't compensate for its patchy script. 6/10

After growing up with western films constantly on TV, I'm not that keen on this genre and generally avoid it. My 9-year-old however is going through the phase of watching nothing but western films.

Tombstone (1993) - 8/10

Although I cringed at Powers Boothe and Michael Biehn browning up, Tombstone is surprisingly nuanced. A couple of stellar performances, particularly from Val Kilmer as Doc Halliday. I didn't like the final scene, which was too Hollywood-mawkish for my taste.

Bad Girls (1994) - no grade

Awful. We switched off after twenty minutes. I was curious enough to Google for the background on this film and found this interesting article: The Movies of 1994: The Buried History of ‘Bad Girls,’ a Would-be Feminist Western Turned Flop. This makes me wish they hadn't fired Tamara Davis and messed with the original script.

Over next few days, we'll watch Unforgiven, The Searchers, 3:10 to Yuma, Once Upon a Time in the West, High Noon, Butch Cassidy and the Sundance Kid, Silverado, The Magnificent Seven and True Grit.

My son wanted the John Wayne version of True Grit, but I talked him into picking the Jeff Bridges version because one Wayne film (The Searchers) is enough for me as I truly can't stand him. He'll watch the Wayne version with his dad next month.

The Westerns are wonderful.

I made my girl watch the main Spaghetti Westerns, and Unforgiven, and wish I could have got her to watch some of these.

The Man who Shot Liberty Valance is a great 'end of the cowboy life' era film, and also worth a watch.

I watched High Noon with my late father - an absolute classic, set in 'real time' (what happens takes place in the one and a half hours of the film) and have never forgotten it.

I was heavily into Cowboy films as a child though, and also used to read cowboy novels as a young teen.

I watched that film on demand today. It was very funny. Jason Statham was hilarious sending up his hardman character. Rose Byrne is a very good comedic actress also.

King Arthur (extended version) - A bit of a slog. I don't think I'll sit through the entire film again, but I'll probably re-watch the final battle scenes.

Elfie Hopkins - Utter bilge.

All is Lost [2013]. Director: J. C. Chandor

7/10

Robert Redford stranded on a yacht in the ocean with barely any lines to say. He carries the film, needless to say but maybe they should have shot the version with the tiger. When the Maersk cargo ship passes by I half expected Tom Hanks to wave from the bridge.

*******
Bread [1971]. Director: Stanley Long

5/10

The King of Sexploitaion directed this tale of a bunch of hippies making their way back from the Isle of Wight Festival and deciding to put on their own festival. Some great footage of live bands (Juicy Lucy and Crazy Mabel) and a few sexy women getting their kit off.

*******
Freaky Friday [1976]. Gary Nelson

5/10

The original Disney role-swap comedy with Jodie Foster. Charlene Tilton (Lucy Ewing in Dallas) has a small role of one of Foster's classmates.
